Your Favorite Jewish Number
Your Favorite Jewish Number#0

What is your favorite song in such a style? This includes a number that either sounds heavily Jewish, is sung by a Jew, utilizes Yiddish, or speaks of general Jew-like content. Yes, it's broad, simply to avoid an overabundance of "Fiddler". I love all things Jewish, but if I must choose an absolute, it would have to be:
"The King of Broadway".

I like George's Prayer in Wedding Singer (Shechyanu).
It's not a musical number, but the sentences in Spelling Bee with Jewish content are great- Jihad, Phylactery, Cenacle, Quandary, Mohel.

Shiksa Goddess (TL5Y)
The Dream (Fiddler)
You Won't Succeed On Broadway (Spamalot)
I heard from someone once (a very reliable teacher) that Shipoopi was written originally with some sort of Yiddush words in it, and had a very heavy Jewish-ish theme. Hah. That entertained me.

Posted: 5/29/06 at 2:37pmI thought You Won't Succeed on Broadway was really entertaining to see live, but I don't really listen to it much on the recording. I like the song "Meeskite" from Cabaret, though.

--The title song from Rags
--"Our Shtetl is America," "Gliding"
--Of course, everything from Fiddler (the show is encoded in Jewish blood at this point)
--"The Channukah Party" from Caroline

To say anything from "Fiddler" would be cliched, so I won't.
You Won't Succeed on Broadway is just hysterical. Beyond that, most of Jamie's songs in L5Y, and Mushnik & Son from Little Shop. I don't know if Springtime For Hitler counts, but that's one of my favorite numbers ever performed on a Broadway stage. On that note, how about The King of Broadway?
