Anyone consider she was making a joke? That's classic LuPone humor.
Did the OP seriously equate Jonathan Groff, Leigh Ann Larkin, Tony Yazbek, etc. to Patti LuPone?
I don't see one thing wrong with what she said.
I'm never surprised at a brusque or no reply from a star of that magnitude who is just coming from a performance and is beseiged by fans night and day.
I know there are some actors who take more time with their fans but bottom line is that if you have high expectations in situations like this, you're bound to be disappointed.
Also, re the boy who cried-you need somewhat of a thick skin for the biz!
"Wait-was she looking into his eyes, seeing her own reflection and reacting to seeing herself with "honey it ain't pretty?" "
A bit forced but I appreciate the effort at comedy.
Patti is so right! With all of the rejection and heartbreak it's amazing to think that anyone would want to devote their life to show business. Then, you see something amazing like August Osage County or Patti's performance in gypsy, and it all seems to make sense.

This guy better thicken up his skin if her's serious about becoming an actor. He'll have many harsh words to deal with in his career--harsher than "It ain't pretty".

Speaking of those flying plates. Boyd Gaines took me on stage after today's matinee to see the new "unbreakable" footlights that have been installed. Too many of the old variety were being shattered by those plates.
To answer luvtheEmcee's question, yes I did equate those less-caliber performers to LuPone, strictly because of their attitude when I met them, not because of their level of talent or stardom. They were very sweet and gracious, and though you are right, they are not LuPone, they too did not have to be overly kind to the fans. Jonathan Groff humbly told me, "I know what it's like to be on the other side of this barricade, so I want to treat these fans as best I can." His is young, yes, and not the star that LuPone is, but he has a point.
I also equated LuPone to larger stars, such as Rosie O'Donnell and Christine Ebersole. They did not "have" to be overly friendly, but they were. Especially Rosie...with her status/level of fame, she does not "have" to take any photographs or have any conversations, but she does, or at least she did for me, and I'll never forget that encounter.
Is anyone suprised at Patti's behavior? She is known for being very rude to fans, and to other actors. The women of THE VIEW can't stand her after her last visit, as she was very rude backstage to all of them, even Barbara. While her comments weren't really "rude" in my opinion, I've heard so many horrible stories about the way she treats people it makes me wonder what kind of a person she is. She seems very ungreatful for her success, and I don't even think she is THAT good.
If he knew anything about Patti, being his "inspiration", then he should've known about her personality. Diva, rude, "bitchy", whatever everyone has been calling her for years. I don't feel that she was being any of these things, she was just being honest. It doesn't matter what you want to call her, she hit the nail right on the head. She knows the business, the ups and downs, the good/bad press, and the harsh realities. If he wants to get into show business, what Patti said will be no comparison to what he'll hear in the future.
Yeah, she knows the down side of the business...when she flashed her boobies in that awful "Summer of Sam" movie. Yikes!

NICE SHE AIN'T!
Bringing someone to tears because of an honest comment? Please...if he didn't want to hear anything, he shouldn't have said anything. Give Patti a break...
God, this "Patti is a bitch," "Patti is overrated" stuff is getting dull.
I agree she should have said "thank you" or at least acknowledged his well-rehearsed compliment.
But the tears were a strange reaction, especially if he wants to be in the biz. I don't know how he'll ever make it through an audition.
He acted like she said, "Honey, YOU ain't pretty."
He burst into tears?? You're hurt because she didn't look you in the eye???
The both of you sound like complete insufferable bores.

How do you know that about the women of THE VIEW not liking her? What happened during her appearance??
Honestly, I have been to soooo many of her shows over the years and have been at stagedoors, backstage, and in her dressing room, and I have never seen her be anything but gracious, appreciative, and funny. Yes, sometimes she's in a bad mood, and yes sometimes she's rushed and tired and wants to get home, but my god, when she's in a good mood, she's hugging people all over the place... very kind and giving. And I have yet to hear an actual actor who has worked with her say that she was a "bitch" or difficult at all.
I just don't get where all the negativity comes from. Oh well...
Apparently she was very rude to the crew of THE VIEW (a friend of mine works there) and she was very flippant to the ladies and acted as if she'd rather be doing anything else then being there. Plus, there were some off-handed comments backstage to the women that were not appreciated. Patti is known for being a total (not that talented) diva, so it wasn't really suprising to me.

Oh yeah, Patti is just known for being "not that talented." That really just validates everything you've said.
Maybe the guy was upset because he was expecting to hear a "thank you", but didn't.
Or, he could have been crying because he didn't expect her to say more than just a passing "thank you" to him. It probably touched him that she would take the time tell him how it really was (though I also agree that a "thank you" in addition to all that would have been better).
Since we don't know what her tone of voice was and what his thoughts are, anything is possible. Personally, I don't think it's fair to jump to any conclusions about either Patti or this guy.

Couldn't it be that this fan was weeping simply because he was simply overwhelmed by meeting his idol and that it had nothing to do with her comment?
I know that is I met oh, say....Barbra Streisand or Meryl Streep, I would not necessarily weep, but there would be tears in my eyes. More likely than not, it sounds as if this is what it was. Lots of people cry upon meeting their idol for the first time (one of the most famous examples of course is Rosie with Barbra).
Sorry, I'm just not a Patti fan. While I will admit she is a good actress (loved her on Life Goes On) and CAN sing, she sings everything the same way no matter what show she is in and her vocal range is slim.
Patti's vocal range being slim will come as a surprise to anyone who has ever heard her sing.

Seriously?
Yep, Three-Note LuPone they used to call her . . .
Sheesh!
