after watching the jane's new york special...

I never said I was on Broadway and never led anyone to believe that. Don't act like it's shocking.
What do you mean the facts suggest otherwise? GOOD VIBRATIONS didn't recieve one positive review from critics, you're acting like I'm the only one that didn't like it. The majority of people that post and read reviews on the NYTimes website are tourists who want to know about different shows before they buy tickets. If they see beach boys music that they love, they want to hear it's good. They don't want to read that it's bad. And what's seriously sad is that you have invested so much effort and time into looking into what I do - seriously, it's strange. Had GOOD VIBRATIONS gotten decent (or even just negative) reviews, instead of abominable reviews, you would have a point. However, in this case, what you're getting at doesn't make much sense. It has gone from you saying the show is good to trying to discredit my opinion any way possible. Get a life, I'm not worth your time.

Posted: 2/27/05 at 2:10pmmy point was that not all shows need to be serious to be good. i have not seen GV yet so im not defending it per say, im defending the right for a musical to be fun and for people to have a good time with out everyone assuming its bad. If you dont like the idea of going to a show to have fun then why did you see GV in the first place? surely you knew what it would be like. And please dont answer with one of those "i wanted to see how bad it was" responses because then you wasted your own money and its your own fault.

I never said I didn't like to have fun on Broadway, you made that up. I also never said a show has to be serious to be good - again, your idea not mine. I went to see GV because I see everything. You learn from every show - good and bad.
Some shows that are well done and still fun:
Urinetown
Avenue Q
42nd Street
Hairspray
Almost every classic musical ever
All Shook Up
Mamma Mia!
etc.
Shows that are not "serious" but good:
Urinetown
Hairspray
All Shook Up
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Forbidden Broadway
42nd Street
the list goes on and on.

Is it just me or does anyone else find Jane Hanson incredibly hot?
That HD camera is very flattering (so is the lighting)...but the over-enunciating? Just creepy.
I remember someone posting here about the wave. They had a problem with the wave when the show moves to NYC temporarily toward the end. It very clearly through lighting and design is supposed to be a hill of snow...quite effectively I thought."
I had the same negative reaction to the wave at the end, but seeing the show again, I looked at the wave and I could see the snowy hilltop now. And yes, it did work effectively. I think it is the difference again in seeing the show in the orch vs. the mezz, where in the mezz the lighting effects are incredible distracting.
If he cared, he would have jumped off the train with her. And it's impossible to find someone in NYC just by knowing what area they live in. Then, after not having seen her for 10 years, he sings "God only knows what I'd be without you." YOU JUST SPENT 10 YEARS WITHOUT HER, SO OBVIOUSLY IT'S POSSIBLE. It's just the worst, most poorly constructed musical I've ever seen.
The lighting cue shows the doors closing, and she jumps out. I don't know how fast you are, but in a crowded train it's tough to catch a door that's closing, after realizing what the other person is doing. So I didn't mind that moment too much.
If you should ever leave me
Though life would still go on believe me
The world could show nothing to me
So what good would living do me.
I do agree on the God Only Knows lyrics don't quite fit the moment, but the sentiment is there, to me it applies to Bobby in that moment that Caroline is his destiny, of sorts, and he has to make her see that he finally shares her feelings.
Not defending the book which, as we know, sucks. But there are some nice moments, and for the finale saved the show by placing their most sincere, emotional song under it.

You thought the finale saved the show? I thought it was a terrible ending - by that point, not even Shakespeare could have saved GV. Although "Gold Only Knows" is my favorite beach boy song, I was just happy at the end that I could finally get out of there. I really really tried to enjoy myself and like the show, but I couldn't get past the amateurness of it. It really is terrible.
Any comment on why they don't tell us the year?

"What do you mean the facts suggest otherwise?"
This is getting tedious. The facts suggest otherwise to your assertion that, "I have been involved with amazing shows and terrible shows - I certainly know the difference." The point is that the facts suggest you DON'T know the difference. Please try reading!
"GOOD VIBRATIONS didn't recieve one positive review from critics"
Inaccuracy #4 in this thread. GV got very positive notices from The New Yorker, UPI, Bloomberg Radio and CityGuide Magazine.
"The majority of people that post and read reviews on the NYTimes website are tourists who want to know about different shows before they buy tickets."
Where's your research to back this up?
"And what's seriously sad is that you have invested so much effort and time into looking into what I do - seriously, it's strange."
One difference between us is that I take the time to research what I say rather than just spouting endless, unsupported hateful opinions. You find it strange because you can be bothered making the effort to support your views with facts.
"I'm not worth your time."
On this we can wholeheartedly agree.

Posted: 2/27/05 at 3:00pmto use the quote on the GV website from the New Yorker "It's Grease on Surfboards! Irresistible Songs and Winning Young Performers" I also remember reading that the rest of the review was good i just cant find it right now.

It's reprehensible that you would insult someone because they have different opinions than you, munk. But it's kind of funny too, since sinenomine is, well, annoying.
P.S. My god, sinenomine, give it up. Obviously he's never going to agree with you

Mythus: I'm not insulting her because we disagree. I'm insulting her because she's crazily trying to make me look like a fool here, for no reason. We're never going to agree, you're right.
My Man Cape: I know that quote, it's on the theatre. However, I don't know if that's supposed to be a compliment - Grease isn't exactly a good show. And yes, the performers are winning and yes, the songs are irresistable - everyone knows that. I'm not going to try and convince you that it's bad, if you want to see it, see it for yourself and I hope you enjoy it.

I liked GV (as one might guess from my avatar). My full review is in my blog (see side) but here are some of the highlights from my review.
"THE CAST-
The cast of this show is amazing. This show is truly an
ensemble production, but as in every production, several actors do rise above the rest. David Larsen is wonderful and he can hit some very high notes. Kate Reinders deserves a Tony Nomination for her turn as Caroline, the nerd turned popular girl, and as always delivers a knock-out performance. Jessica Snow-Wilson does well in her limited role, as do Brandon Wardell and Tituss
Burgess. The cast works wonderfully together and makes this show a delight to watch!"
"THE BOOK/SCORE
Well, I love the Beach Boys’ music, and to me the book worked
well with the show. The book was funny, and the plot worked well. Sure some of the lines were corny, but who cares? I think the book-writer should be applauded because he had an enormous task, and surpassed what he needed to do.
THE DIRECTION/CHOREGOGRAPHY
John Carrafa does a splendid job in the choreography
department, providing some groovy dance moves for everyone in the cast. His direction is also very good, but could be better.
THE DESIGNS
The set was very underwhelming for me, a little less so in
the second act, but all in all, not up to what it could have been. The costumes, when present, were wonderful! The lighting was amazing, and will definitely get a Tony nod, if not a win!
All in all, I’m very pleased with this production, and I
can see it being nominated for Best Musical. I’m not saying it will win, but it deserves to be nominated. So, regardless of what you have heard, do yourself a favor, and go see “Good Vibrations”! "
Anyways, thats my 2 cents. :)

sinenomine - Back off Bitch! We have a little title around here for posters like you - SHILL! Don't think that you can have respect the instant you join...respect is earned not forced. Sure munk hasn't acted in exactly the best way, but it's YOU that looks look an ass right now, not him.
Crawl back into a hole and enjoy the money that the producers of GV are paying you.

re: after watching the jane's new york special...#42
Posted: 2/27/05 at 3:38pmwow this has gotten completely out of hand. Munk has a point, this show is oretty much a trainwreck, i am still considering seeing it if its cheap (its gotta have a discount code soon) soully for the songs themselves and the girls in the cast. There isn't a snowman's chance in hell for this to get a nod for best musical or even a nomination.

There isn't a chance in hell that they'll be nominated for anything.
If you're really curious about it, go check it out. Just expect garbage, maybe you'll like it. They have rush tickets - and they ALWAYS have rush tickets, especially on weekdays.

munk- no I am not under the influence of any controlled substance so BACK OFF! I am entitled to my opinion, and as I said, this is from my review written in mid-January. Currently my predix for Best musical are:
Spamalot
DRS
Spelling Bee
Light in the Piazza
However, I think Reinders has a shot at a nod, lighting and sets could win tonys and deserve nods.
re: after watching the jane's new york special...#45
Posted: 2/27/05 at 4:51pmIt will not recieve one nomination.

I saw GV on Feb 5th and I have to agree that as a musical comedy, it was awful. I enjoyed the songs and the energy of the cast, but not much else. The sets were terrible...especially that wave in Act 2. But, I did come out of the theater with a smile. Even though the book was terrible, we still had a nice mindless afternoon. Since I only paid $26 for Student Rush, I didn't feel ripped off. If I had paid $100, I would have left the theater in a bad mood. I will not see it again and I will be shocked if it gets any Tony nominations. There are so many great shows still to open. I am very excited for DRS (in two weeks), Light in the Piazza and Sweet Charity (beginning of april).
If you like Beach Boys music, go ahead and see GV, but only expect to enjoy the music. The rest of it isn't too great.

Posted: 2/27/05 at 4:57pmI think Kate Reinders did a really good job, but I don't think she will get a nomination. There are a lot of other actresses in stronger roles, and better shows who did better jobs. I would be very surprised if they received any nominations.
