assassins sending the wrong message?

I saw Assassins last Friday, and was very dissapointed in the score....ANYWAY...It seemed to me that the show sends mixed messages when it came to the storyline. Instead of the show being a historical account of presidential deaths and a glimpse into the minds of the Assassins,i think that some may take it as a suggestion that killing someone will get you noticed. Hmm...I don't think that this is the right message to be sending out with all of the terrorist threats going on.

The show was never meant to be a song and dance trip through history.

It's a controversial show. That's why it was pulled in the immediate wake of the 9/11 attacks. If you want something uplifting and patriotic listen to Lee Greenwood.

re: assassins sending the wrong message?

I think the message of Assassins is deeper than that. The assassins are disenfranchised from society. They are losers and n'er do wells. They feel that they haven't gotten the same piece of the American Dream as everyone else. They feel weak and powerless and they kill to make their grievances heard.

As far as Assassins begetting violence...it would take a person highly open to the power of suggestion to see the show and want to go out and kill someone. That inspires the age old argument over whether violence in popular culture encourages further violence. Every year there are some stupid fatalities inspired by something someone has seen on television or in the movies. (How can one forget the recent news story of the man who tried to crucify himself after seeing The Passion of the Christ, but had to stop when he realized he couldn't nail in his other hand.) I don't believe Assassins has the power to convince someone to commit a presidential assassination, but I'd be curious to read what others have to say on the subject.

I also don't think people prone to assassinating politicians would hold off until they saw a musical, and that THAT would be the thing that tipped them over the edge. Nor do I think there are many terrorists lining up to see it, no matter how much they love Neil Patrick Harris.

I stand behind magruder. ASSASSINS does not promote murders/assassinations, the second does not apply to Sean Combs case, as an appropriate outlet. It merely displays these nine victims of society as victims of society.

The interesting thing that I find in this show is that it illustrates the different paths that people take. The choices that they make and how it affects those around them. (Hmm, shades of Into The Woods?) It leaves you with the question, what makes one person a president and one person an assassin? All you have to do is move your little finger and you can change the world. Each assassin has a specific motive for what they do and it is not because they are just crazy lunatics. They believe in their mission enougth to kill for it no matter how crazy everyone else thinks it is.

Namo if you do, I know some great burial places. Remember April is "give a life" month. It doesn't have to be yours.

It's no mystery that killing people will get you noticed.
And one of the things I love about Assassins is that it doesn't offer answers or solutions, ideas are stated and thrown around for you to take in and decipher. If the only thing you drew from the "disappointing score" is that killing gets you noticed, then go watch it again, there's a lot more to discover.

Jamie Hat, i agree with you 100%... most people don't go to the theater with the intent of discovering something... they want to escape and be entertained with splashy musical numbers and pop stars... that's why shows like Wicked do so well and show like Assassins end up as limited runs... Rent is somewhere in between... how long do you think Caroline, or Change will play?

I'm actually shocked by the number of people who don't realize that this show, in many ways, is not actually about the Presidential assassains (this is coming much more from some of the comments I've read over at ATC...which is supposedly filled with the real movers and shakers). They are just a device to explore the theme that in America, the land where 'everybody's got the right to be happy', many are disenfranchised by our capitalist system of government. That theme is actually echoed in a seemingly more benign piece of theatre, TAKE ME OUT. Marz says he loves baseball because somebody has to lose. It's a purer expression of America than anything any catchphrase can capture.

I love those folks on ATC that say 'Well it didn't happen like that...Booth didn't show up at the depository and talk Oswald into shooting Kennedy!' Well, guess what. No orchestra swelled in when Zangara was being electrocuted. It's not real, nor does it once pretend to be. And the fact is, the characters themselves aren't even Booth and Oswald. That scene is really about a man (and it could be any one of us) at the end of his rope who hears that dark voice inside his head, encouraging him to believe that he has the right to make his mark in any way possible.

We can argue forever how effectively that statement is made. But the message of this show is not dangerous. The danger lies in not truly exploring and understanding what this piece is saying.

To me, the disturbing thing about this show isn't any particular assassin's motivation - it's the idea that we've decided to turn people who kill into entertainment without perspective. The frightening truth is that much of the public does not understand the 'theatre as mirror to society' metaphor. Unfortunately, this has been exacerbated by action movies and twisted expressions of violence as pure entertainment. I doubt many people leave this show thinking, "Wow, if any of those assassins truly understood the futility of their anger, would they have made another choice?"

Just how good IS the good of the few? And who should get to make that decision?

Tastes vary @ different times. I went to see Frozen dealing w pedophile serial killers, The psychiatrist who is studing the killer & the mother of a mudered child. A real knee slapper. Part of the point is the killers are mentally damaged & their behavior is predetermined by this damage. So they are ill. Do they deserve to be killed because they are ill? So is the play an apologia for serial pedophile killers? NO! but it causes you to think about well everything about. About how abused children become abusing adults. About loss about forgiveness about life.
The next night I saw Ave Q. So there ya go!
Musicals can be dark just rarely a hit if they are!
