KJisgroovy: Thank you for bringin up the subject of "rediscovering" CDs. It happens to me a lot, I guess your current mood and expectations may affect your initial impression of a cast album you might later pick up again and love. As for your questions, the US Martin Guerre is called something like "U.S. Tour Cast Recording" or something. I don't have it with me now, so I can't give you more details, but it's basically the same music as the London version but with different lyrics and song order. I liked the show in London but this US CD did nothing for me. I guess they recorded the show because they wanted to have the CD ready for sale during the big Broadway opening weeks . . . which as we know, never happened.
Some Like It Hot is the London version of "Sugar". It starred Tommy Steele and is inferior to "Sugar" which I think is just an OK show to begin with. Tony Curtis did a recent tour of this latter version in the US but I think it flopped.
I did not hate Patti in Evita, just in Sunset. It's just that, as someone wisely pointed out, Mandy Patinkin and La Lupone are cursed with that love it or hate it thing. I loved her in Eva, hated her in Sunset. I generally hate Mandy Patinkin, though! (not that anyone asked).

Posted: 8/18/04 at 4:40pm87 ??? You can listen to them all a couple of times in less than a month. I'm currently at 1195 cast recordings (not counting the LPs I have yet to transfer to CD) and there are a few I have not yet heard, but I will soon. I don't regret having them or buying them as they all have something to teach about musical theatre. But there are a few I would rather not hear again, but I probably will for the sake of curiosity or research.

Posted: 8/18/04 at 4:44pmMisterMatt, I am beyond impressed...1195 cast recordings is incredible! Do you just buy everything you see or do hunt specific recordings down?

Posted: 8/18/04 at 5:33pmI'm a collector. Basically, if it has the word "musical" or "cast", I'll pick it up. You never know when you'll find a real gem like Lucky Stiff (new recording to be released soon!!), Flahooley (Yma Sumac rocks), Goldilocks (bliss), I Love My Wife, and other fine scores rarely mentioned outside the realm of msucial theatre literature or Ken Mandlebaum columns.

Posted: 8/18/04 at 5:39pmMust be great to have access to that much choice. Man, where I live it's tough to find anything obscure and when I see something that I don't know it jumps right out at me. That's rare.
