Posted: 8/14/08 at 8:06amWhile I had no plans of seeing another production of Godspell, I am very sorry for the actors who had counted on this production to happen. I hope they all get other acting jobs soon.

Posted: 8/14/08 at 8:13amThis is so sad. I was really looking forward to this show. I had seen it at Papermill and it was great. The cast was amazing too. I feel so bad for the actors who left there shows to do this one. Joshua Henry left In The Heights, Telly Leung left RENT. This is just so sad.

With these three and the Cole Porter thing with Harry Connick Jr being cancelled, it does not bode well for Broadway.
Very sad, very scary.

Technically "For Colored Girls" and "Brigadoon" weren't canceled they were postponed. They postponed "For Colored Girls" due to the loss of a backer and they postponed Brigadoon due to lack of a Broadway theatre being available.
Do I think that those two shows are as good as canceled? Yes, I do. But, keep in mind that there is a big difference between canceled and postponed and those two words mean a whole lot when your using them to describe a future of a Broadway show.
That being said, I am sad to see that this show isn't going on. Can't say I am surprised to be honest with you. However, I do feel sorry for the actors out there who don't have a job anymore. It wouldn't have shocked me to hear that rehersals have started already and that they were getting this show up from the ground. A bad and sad time to hear that your show is going to be no more.

Posted: 8/14/08 at 9:16amI know that times are hard, but something tells me this has more to do with the viability of a revival of this show. Most theater people have seen one of the countless regional, high school, or college productions, or been in one. I also don't know that the show would be terribly appealling to today's audiences. And that's why I wouldn't put money into it, if I had a million dollars to spare. If you really want a hippie musical on broadway, there's one playing uptown that would fare MUCH better. (In fact, perhaps the rumors of Hair moving to Broadway have scared producers away, fearing the shows are too similar, and Hair already has a head start)

I just got my tickets in the mail yesterday.
$1 million seems like such a small amount to raise. Couldn't Stephen Schwartz kick it in?

Remember The Producers? Rule #1- never put your own money into your show. Rule #2- NEVER put your own money into your show!
Schwartz is smart. He's not going to waste his money.

Posted: 8/14/08 at 9:24amVery sad. I have a soft spot for this show, and it's a shame to see it fail like this. The cast must be devastated.

Posted: 8/14/08 at 9:43amThey really should have set their sights at producing it off-Broadway. I think it works better in an intimate setting anyway.

The cast is VERY devasted. How would you like to be prepping for rehearsals, learning lines and music and doing research -- all this time knowing that you're going to open in a Broadway show this Fall, ready to start rehearsals next week, and then suddenly you get an e-mail and phone calls saying "sorry, we couldn't raise the money and your contract does not go into effect. The production is cancelled."
Some actors had given up other Broadway shows to do this. Others didn't bother going to other auditions because they already had a show. Perhaps some had other offers but chose GODSPELL instead.
Not to mention the designers and creative team who had been working.
This is such a roller-coaster business. One minute you're up and the next you've plummeted down.

The headaches, the heartaches, the backaches, the flops
The sheriff who escorts you out of town
The opening when your heart beats like a drum
The pre-opening when the customers won't come.
There's no business like show business

Specially if you are told thru an e-mail!
The actors, who were supposed to start rehearsals next week, learned of the cancellation in an e-mail Tuesday night from their director. Many had given up jobs at long-running shows and will now be left scrambling for work at a time when the economic climate on Broadway is souring.

yeah, finding out by email seems like the theater equivalent to getting broken up by post-it.
So sad
