Why is there a need for them to performed, if the show is cancelled? I thought the whole point of BROADWAY at BRYANT PARK is to promote the shows that are currently playing or will open on Broadway? Is it?

I guess the consensus is that if they perform tomorrow, there might be a hope that this'll still happen.
Stranger stuff has happened...

Its cancelled not postponed! per Riedel's article:
THE economic turmoil on Broadway has claimed its first victim: "Godspell." The revival, which was to start previews at the Barrymore next month, has been canceled, barring any last-minute reprieve. Sources say producer Adam Epstein was short $1 million of the production's $4.5 million cost.

Okay so here is the thing I want to know... Why if it has been canceled has Playbill.com, Broadway.com and a host of other theater websites not written about it. Just Reidel?
Seems a little fishy to me... Maybe a little loaves and fishy? (sorry couldn't resist)

I was wondering that, myself, JRybka. This is fairly big news, if it's true. Why hasn't Playbill or something posted a story about it? Are they waiting for a press release?
Also, the article opens with "THE economic turmoil on Broadway has claimed its first victim: 'Godspell.'" Not exactly true, is it?
Edited because I can't spell.

I think the reason the production hasn't sent out a press release is because they're still searching for a backer. Still, they already told the cast the show is cancelled, hence where all these stories are coming from. I can't imagine they will be able to find a backer.

Posted: 8/14/08 at 5:09pmExactly. The production's cancellation is not yet "official." They're trying to find their last hope for an investor to come in with the cash. Until it's official, Playbill/Broadway.com/BWW/Theatermania will not post it as fact and Telecharge will continue to sell tickets.

Posted: 8/14/08 at 5:36pmHypothetically, let's say they find a backer within the next couple of days or a week from now. If the cast has been told the show is cancelled would they still be bound to be part of the cast? I'm assuming if they've been told it's cancelled that they'd be looking for new jobs. If Rent were to find a way to keep Telly Leung, as an example, would he be allowed to do that or would he still have to do Godspell?

Joshua Henry posted this on Gavin's Facebook:
"I still have one week left next week, but then I will have to leave because I put in my 4 week notice already. I really do think there will be something better for us, and that although it's hard to see right now, it happened for a reason. Talk to you soon."
So I guess there is no little hope that it would somehow pull through.

Posted: 8/15/08 at 1:09pmThat is really horrible that those actors are now out of jobs. But it is strange that the Post is the only source of the cancellation news...none of the theatre websites I check have said anything about it. They did articles for FOR COLORED GIRLS and BRIGADOON. I'm wondering if they're holding out for backers to come in. Have they taken down the adverts around NYC?

Posted: 8/15/08 at 2:28pmTickets were supposed to go on sale to the general public on August 23. I wonder if they are holding off until then.
