"How would you like to be prepping for rehearsals, learning lines and music and doing research"
For Godspell?
re: godspell cancelled#26
Posted: 8/14/08 at 11:11amI'm kind of surprised that the e-mail had not been leaked by now.

Pretty sad to be notified via email. (Because the cast is so huge it would take hours to contact them?)
I suppose a million dollars doesn't seem like a tremendous amount...but out of the total figure (4.5 Mill) it's a pretty big percentage of missing funds.
And even though we'd heard the rumors since Tues. night, I am still saddened.

I didn't hear any rumors because I read posts at BWW, which for some reason has a lot of disappearing posts.

So that makes 5 cancellations this season:
Angels (no great loss)
Nice Work If You Can Get It (big loss)
Brigadoon (The Choreography was brilliant for this revival)
Colored Girls ... Enuf (Would have loved to have seen it)
Godspell
Do you think the cancellation of these shows will make theatres available for others or help shows like [TOS] run longer?

Why are they still selling tickets?
Just for giggles, I checked out Telecharge, which was more than willing to sell me a couple of full price tickets to the Sept. 29 show.

As am I.

This is terrible, but I think we all need to salute Adam Epstein for doing ONE thing right:
Earlier this year, the producers behind GLORY DAYS brought in a show that was under-capitalized and didn't have the proper financial support it needed to sustain a long run. HOWEVER, instead of cancelling the show before it began (like they should have), they waited until opening night, then realized that their show didn't have the financial support to move on, and cancelled it- wasting three weeks in the lives of several actors and creatives and costing many people what were, at the time, very steady jobs.
The same happened in London with JAY JOHNSON'S THE TWO AND ONLY, which opened to raves and was attracting ticket buyers, but had to close after two weeks because it was not properly capitalized before it began.
But Adam Epstein is being a stand-up guy, and isn't trying to waste anyone's time by sending these actors into rehearsal and simultaneously trying to come up with money. He's doing the right thing.
That said- this sucks BIG TIME, for everyone involved.

I am afraid for TITLE OF THE SHOW! They are barely making it~almost 40-50% of its capacity every week!
A TALE OF TWO CITIES will starts previews next week. I should probably see it soon like 8/23 instead of 9/6? It looks like anything can be cancelled now a days!

Hard-hearted, perhaps, but not unrealistic. I'm afraid for much of B'way....and it won't be too long until Off B'way begins to feel the pinch. Unless, like during the strike, they reap the benefits! (Which wouldn't be horrible.)

FYI - the producers of GLORY DAYS did not "realize" on Opening Night.
They had known, over two weeks before, that it wouldn't clear out of the red.
They waited to post the Closing Notice in hopes of a successful preview week (which didn't happen).

Posted: 8/14/08 at 12:57pmThe part about the cast finding out via email is what took me by surprise. Is this the typical way something like this is done? It seems like a small enough cast that those involved in the decision could divide up a list of names and start calling people. Adam Epstein made a responsible decision not to move forward but if he was also responsible for the mass email notification (or told somebody to do it that way) that seems very impersonal and cold considering several in the cast were obviously going to feel crushed by the news.

Posted: 8/14/08 at 1:12pmDamn it to hell. Somebody in that cast wasn't praying hard enough!

I agree with everyone about the e-mail thing. That's just so cold and impersonal.
I feel sorry for everyone involved.
I just hope this doesn't keep happening during this season. And I thought that the 2005-2006 season was a bloodbath. This is worse.

Posted: 8/14/08 at 1:46pmMan I really wanted to see the show !!! But I wish the actors the best of luck and I hope this situation changes.

I just saw Telly Leung at Broadway in Bryant Park with RENT. I wonder if he's going back?
(btw, whoever was in charge of sound should be shot...seriously)

You said: "I just saw Telly Leung at Broadway in Bryant Park with RENT. I wonder if he's going back?"
I don't believe Telly ever left RENT. I believe he's always been scheduled to stay up until the end.
