musicnmath: "And bleeping out the first "hummer" but not the second "hummer" was hysterical!!"

Well, the second hummer was in reference to the car. It would be weird if they bleeped out the name of a car.

I'm agreeing with people in that I don't think GBS was the right number to perform, just because it might have made DRS come off as silly and inapropriate. I also would have liked to see Sherie on stage!

Ps, how cute was it when the camera panned to her during Norbert's speech and she was crying like a baby?

I've never seen DRS (except the movie, which I very much love) and I've never heard any of its music. I've kind of been trying to decide if its something I would want to see or not. Personally, I thought Great Big Stuff was HORRIBLE last night. It did NOT make me want to see the show.

That being said, I'd still be willing to give the show a chance, b/c I thought ALL the numbers last night were pretty bad (including those I've seen in context, on stage, and enjoyed). Its not really the fault of the actors- I'm sure Norbert deserved his award and all- it just was... just really outta context I guess. :/ Plus, as great as Norbert probably is, it would have been nice to see some John Lithgow (ok, so we saw a teeeeeeensy bit) and Sherie Rennee Scott too.

Did they sing a little bit from the Dirty Rotten song in the Tony's opening number?

Norbert Leo Butz quotes about John Lithgow: "He's really clumsy. One of the joys in life is to watch a great big huge man totally wipe out backstage. It takes John about three minutes to hit the floor. It's like watching a Great Sequoia falling gracelessly."

I thought this was the best performance of the night! It made me pull out my DRS recording and listen to it, and it made me recommend the show to a friend who is going to be in NYC next week (provided he could get tickets). I thought Spamalot's performance was the worst of the night, by far!

"What the hell happened to you? You look like a Make-A-Wish Kid. You know, I just knew you were gonna bring shame on this new family of ours, and it just figures you had to go make yourself over into some heroin-shootin skate board chic on the only day E! could interview you!" - Cherry Cherry, on her daughter Mary Cherry

i'm the opposite. i thought spamalot had the best performance last night and drs the worst. i thought piazza and bee were both pretty great too (too bad for vicky that she had to hold a mic?)...

cs, they did a little bit of dirty rotten song during the opening and john sounded great and norbert sounded awful and cracked.

Having heard Norbert in other things, I know he can really belt generally but had I not known that I probably wouldn't have been all that impressed by him in DRS. He didn't sound bad I don't think, but he certainly didn't sound as good as he could. But as someone else said, with so much going on that night its perhaps somewhat understandable that his mind wasn't fully on that performance.

I wanted to get something that an "ex"-junkie like him would really appreciate and cherish....it's a brick of heroin shaped like a heart. -Scrubs

I enjoyed the performance but I didn't understand why they didn't feature Sherie and Joanna at all that night... even during the previews none of them made their way on the stage

I was kind of disappointed about that... I rank my performances:
1. Piazza [a sort of biased view, but nonetheless]
2. Spamalot
3. DRS
4. Bee
5. not even worth mentioning

Yes it would be funny if Norbert sang to John: love is my legs and you are my love, so you are my leg my love or the end of the song "It was all in my head, now you get on that bed"!

Norbert Leo Butz quotes about John Lithgow: "He's really clumsy. One of the joys in life is to watch a great big huge man totally wipe out backstage. It takes John about three minutes to hit the floor. It's like watching a Great Sequoia falling gracelessly."

Hold it--did someone say they changed the DRS song lyrics five times before the show? So they probably had to do some run-throughs. Combine that with Norbert doing his eighth of 8 shows that afternoon, running around to pick up every major award for which he was nominated, go to Tony rehearsal, be a parent..do a demanding part...gee, any wonder why this guy is exhausted?

And I have to disagree...I thought he was perfect in GBS, but I will concede DRN--that song usually Norbs carries and it was evident the harmonies were less than stellar last night. I felt John could not be heard at all, like his mike wasn't on.

I get that...that's why I find it hysterical -- it's the exact same word

amen wendy!! i agree totally!! cut him some slack! and i mean come on, hes norbert fricken leo butz!!! he oozes sexiness in his voice and you all should know his voice is amazing! and yeah he could have been better in dirty rotten number...but wasnt this his first tony performance? i mean, c'mon, if you were in that situation, youd be nervous, no matter how good of a lock you had and no matter how established of an actor you were. we all know that idina is AMAZING but in my opinion she wasnt as good during the tony's is in wicked but hell, we all know her voice is great, norbie is the same. you leave him alone!!!!!! re: great big stuff.. i love him soooo lol.

I loved "Great Big Stuff" when I saw the show, but I didn't think it worked so well as a stand-alone number. I would have much preferred to see them do "Dirty Rotten Number" - not only is it a great song, but it would have given a showcase to all three of their leading performer nominees.

Am I the only one who was surprised to hear the DRN "spoiler" line in that brief snippet they did in the opening montage???

Lady - you are not. I posted that as I saw it -- I thought that was the whole reason for not doing Dirty Rotten Number...they could've even included Sherie in the reprise.

oh well....all in the past now...

I'm not familiar with Dirty Rotten Scoundrels ('cept the movie), and was thoroughly unimpressed by the performance. I'd still like to see it, but it's not really at the top of my list. All of the comments about how much better the show is have made me feel better about ordering the cast recording, though. re: great big stuff..

On the other hand, my very anti-Broadway friend came running up to me in school, this morning, and started going "I watched part of the Tonys last night! I LOVED that song... the... the... the one with Norbert Leo Butz [who she knows of because of me]!" Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

GBS last night ... A friend (who tuned in off and on last night only because of Hugh hosting) emailed me to ask who the cute guy playing the butler was and if he's married. (She was referring to Tom Galantich whose Playbill bio includes mention of a "beautiful wife and son.")

You never know who or what viewers are going to notice. She also thought Greg had some "good screen time" but that he "looked mean." I told her he was simply in character and is supposed to be scowling a bit during this particular number.

I agree that the number didn't sound as good as it does in the show itself (judging by when I saw it and what others have said who have seen performances) or on the CD. I don't know if it was nerves on Norbert's part, if they didn't have opportunity enough to rehearse for that venue, if it was a case of having had 2 shows on Sat. and then a Sun. matinee just before having to go to RCMH for all the red carpet interviews and then performing in front of a live tv audience ...

Please though, those of you who haven't seen the show but have thought you might want to, or who haven't yet heard the CD, don't let the way the number was presented on the Tonys keep you from going to the show or buying the CD. Last night didn't do it proper justice.

As someone who hasn't seen DRS, the Tony performance was not in the least enjoyable. It did not come off well. It may be wonderful in the context of the show, but last night it probably only worked for people who have already seen the show. I am aware that there is a huge difference in seeing a number in the context of the show and seeing it taken out of context. Great Big Stuff may have been an unfortunate choice to 'advertise' the show on the Tonys, no matter how good it and Butz are in the theatre. Updated On: 6/6/05 at 08:58 PM

A little story, I remember seeing "They Both Reached for the Gun" performed on Rosie's show (James Naughton and Ann Reinking) before I saw Chicago. I thought it seemed dreadful. When I saw the song in the context of the show, it was a musical highlight. Same with " You Can do it" from the Producers. Context is everything and DRS is great!
