i think part of the problem norbert had (although if it were me on the biggest night of my life singing for that many people i'd have been even more nervous) is i think that when the set rotated it spun wrong, i know its on a turntable in the show which would mean it would be on the other side when it rotated not in the same spot. That could have thrown him off a touch. I noted he looked like the cat who swallowed the canary when he sung the lines that he just knew would get cut, which was great

"Grease," the fourth revival of the season, is the worst show in the history of theater and represents an unparalleled assault on Western civilization and its values. - Michael Reidel

"The tricky part was clipping the number out and condensing it. We wanted something that would represent the show properly. We wanted something that would show a lot of energy. I had very much wanted to do the closing duet with Norbert and John. But the truth of the matter is that as great as that song is, it works best as an ending, when the audience knows who their characters are and reach that emotional place in the show. 'Great Big Stuff' is funnier and probably more representative of the zonky spirit of the show."

This was said by Jack O'brian the director.
I still don't agree with this choice.

Norbert Leo Butz quotes about John Lithgow: "He's really clumsy. One of the joys in life is to watch a great big huge man totally wipe out backstage. It takes John about three minutes to hit the floor. It's like watching a Great Sequoia falling gracelessly."

Yes but for the Ruprecht song they should have changed at least twenty words because CBS wouldn't permit it. Shame, shame, shame

I've seen DRS twice at the Imperial and its quite obvious that NOTHING compares to live theatre. I think that Norbert was far from awful, maybe some of you need to get new televisions or speakers, and its true that out of context the song doesn't make as much sense, but really I think that was true of all of the numbers on the tonys. Unless you do an opening number, such as Spelling Bee or Avenue Q last year, the song makes little to no sense. As for making people want to see the show, none of you seem able to come up with a better song, which makes me think that no matter what you wouldn't be happy b/c it would make no sense out of context, since all of the songs are closely tied to the plot. Personally, I thought that Sweet Charity had the worst performance. As for Spamalot, I saw the show and loved it, but their performance did nothing for those who are not already interested in the show. It was MUCH worse than the live version and once again the actors seemed confused (David Hyde Pierce came in early on his line before the feet took off). I think that the combined 8 performances, Tony pressure, and being taken out of their element add to the disjointed and subpar feel of most of the numbers. Bottomline, Norbert deserved his Tony, no one is aruguing that, and clearly there are some people who GBS sparked interest in the show in and others not. I know several people who saw that performance and thought he was amazing and are excited to see the show. It was far from awful, and please do not question my taste, b/c I have seen the show and I have seen a lot of shows and I don't just like everything I see (i.e. I like Wicked, but I though Defying Gravity at the Tony's last year wasn't very good, mostly due to context and Idina's nervousness making her voice waver and crack). For those of you who haven't seen DRS, or any of nominated Best New Musicals, I highly recommend that you do, you will not regret it.

You know what the saddest thing for me? Everyone keeps saying that the numbers was awfull or near awfull but I won't have a chance to travel to New York and see the show so I would be happier if Norbert just play the whole damn show in the award ceremony.

all i have to say is that before spamalot's performance my dad goes "what in the world is this" and afterwards he goes "we have to see that right away when it comes to boston." that was the only show that he reacted to in any way.

At the Imperial, NLB's exuberant, over-the-top, delicious performance made Great Big Stuff a showstopper. It was the moment I voted (in my head and heart) for him to win the Tony. Via TV and in the relatively giant Radio City Musical Hall, none of the numbers came across anywhere near as well as in their home theaters. This always seems to be the case, or maybe it's just me.

Norbert just couldn't hear himself in the opening number. He hit the nastiest of incorrect notes and finally heard the atrocity that was that note and corrected himself a little too late.

But I heart Norbert and I know deserved that win.

Question: Will Esparza win for The Homecoming? BobbyBubby: I hope so. If only for the mental health of many people on this board.

I loved it, but maybe it was an off day. Idina Menzel had an off day at the Tonys (last year) and it sounded like Sara Remirez (Pardon the spelling) did too. But for the most part, I loved "great big stuff!"

you say i'm weird! look at everyone you're sitting with! and hey, those guys over there just threw napkins up in the air like they were on something! it's contajous! you can't help it!

Contrary to others, I thought that the Spamalot number was great. It was funny and very well-sung in my opinion. Then again, I haven't seen the show or have hear any other "better" versions of it. I enjoyed a lot of the Tony's although, agreeably, it was not the best. coughArethacough

Yeah I would have to agree with you on Norbert, but I bet it would be much better seeing it without the cuts. Don't know if it would be my first pick to see though. I would have to say that I thought Sara did pretty well. She did make me laugh and the scene made me want to see the show! I felt she did better than Idina when she performed. But of course you gotta love em all!

I cannot get "Find your Grail" out of my head...it made me want to see "Spamalot"...something about the way DPH and Chris Sieber were rocking out...and I think Sara came across great despite obvious allergies.

I guess I'm the only one who thought Idina did ok at the Tonys last year--hey, she cracked on that note a little when I saw her live in "Wicked."

he was just nervous, i mean he probably knew he was going to win or at least was nervous about the possibility. Idina's performance last year wasnt her best either. Norbert is still great though in DRS

...Please understand that it's still strange and frightning...

I know a lot of you guys disagree, but I just have to say that I though GBS was awesome last night. I've never seen the show, but that performance has me completely hooked. I've always loved Norbert, but I never had a strong desire to see the show. Now I'm just waiting for a chance to get to NY and see it. If his "bad performance" last night was that good, I can only imagine how incredible it would be live. Before the Tony's, I had wanted to Spamalot more than I wanted to see DRS, but Spamalot's performance did nothing for me, and now I'd rather see DRS.

On a side note. . .it's kind of funny how ppl still manage to find a way to bring up Idina Menzel
