re: how old were you when you were first allowed to see shows/go into the c

I am 17 and I can go where ever I want to in the city on my own. I have been going to private school in NYC since middle school despite the fact I live on long island. So, I have been commuting sp? since grade six. I have spent so much time in the city on my own that I joke about how I only sleep on long island and live in the city.

The thing is, that NYC is MUCH safer then it was around the start of the 90's. NYC is ranked very highly in us cities that have low crime. I think its like number 2 behind boston.

17 or 18, while NYC was a far different city at the time, I wouldn't expect your parents to budge before you're 16. In the meantime, get one of your parents to go in with you, plan the trip, plan the time you'll be getting trains, plan when/where you want to go, if you need the subway or not, completely prove that you're comfortable with getting around and show them you can handle it. Just my two cents...

I was 15 and usually went in with my best friend. Now that I look back, I can't believe my parents actually let me go, considering what the Times Square area was like back in the late 70s!!

I was thinking the same thing, Dottie. I lived in Virginia but I traveled back and forth to DC on my own starting at about 11. That may be why my folks let me go to NY with my two best friends for my 15th birthday. (Also the fact that we only had one thing on our minds - seeing the Beatles! - and couldn't have cared less about Times Square.)

I went when I was a freshman in high school with a group of students. We had a chaperone, but she ditched us and we were left to our own devices. I then started going on my own. I lived there alone at 16, taking classes at Columbia. My parents are ultra-protective, even though I'm now an adult, because I'm an only child, however, I was allowed to go by myself from an early age because I demonstrated a level of maturity that warranted their trust.

14 - and like Dottie this was in the 70s when Times Square was a theme park of a very different nature. But nothnig ever happened, I had been taught how to handle myself and I knew where to go and where not to go. It really depends on your parent's sense of your maturity and common sense. Good luck.

Cheyenne Jackson tickled me. AFTER ordering SoMMS a drink but NOT tickling him, and hanging out with Girly in his dressing room (where he DIDN'T tickle her) but BEFORE we got married. To others. And then he tweeted Boobs. He also tweeted he's good friends with some chick on "The Voice" who just happens to be good friends with Tink's ex. And I'm still married. re: how old were you when you were first allowed to see shows/go into the c

I'm 16 and I went to the city with my friend this past november to see two shows one day and we got dropped off at 1pm by my moms friend and picked up at midnight by my dad after the evening show. I went to the city by myself in December but I have proven to my mom (i live with her) that she can trust me and that im mature enough not to do anything stupid.

But your parents are probably worried-its their job to be. Especially these days, its much different from when they were younger. Why not ask your parents to drop you off (if you are going to see a show..) at the theater and then have them pick you up in the same spot when its over, or a little after :)

I went on a bus trip to see The Wiz in 1975 from Phila. But my firt time going with a friend was when I was 16 to see "Dracula" at the, then, Martin Beck. It was the 1st of several trips to NYC my best friend in High school and I took to see theatre. And we would always eat at The Brew Burger! (Which is now gone)

Are you only going to the Times Sq area to see a show, or are you going other places as well?

I grew up like 30 min from NYC and I think I was in hs when I was first allowed. But it really depends - I am 23 now and I don't feel too comfortable going in by myself, just because I moved farther away a few years ago and I have since forgotten the ins and outs of the subways, etc. I also despise the shuttle for some reason.
But it is really up to your parents.

I'm 19 and my parents still get nervous whenever I go into the city alone. Granted, I didn't grow up as close to NYC as you did, but I started going with just friends during my senior year in high school. It's probably more depending on you as an individual than age.
