i figure with all the discussion i might as well pose the question.
mine:
wicked- what is this feeling
avenue q- same or special
caroline- same (not familiar with the show)
boy from oz- once before i go or i go to rio
fiddler- same
wonderful town- conga
assassins- same but w/ mark kudish in
wicked- For Good
avenue q- Only for now
caroline- a different # that would have made me want to see the show more.
boy from oz- I don't know the show
fiddler- the dream sceen but it would hwva to be scaled down
wonderful town- conga
assassins- what they did.
I was thinking about For Good, for Wicked...but that's at the end...and could sorta kinda maybe give things away...It would have showcased both of them relly well though.
I still stand by "What is this Feeling?" for WICKED...
From the shows I'm familiar with:
Wicked - What is this Feeling or Popular - probably WITF because it's more ensemble-based
Boy From Oz - I Go To Rio (just make sure there's still time to mortify SJP!)
Avenue Q - The Internet Is For Porn. Because it's the most appropriate song for this classy event.
Wicked-Defying Gravity was the best choice, but I wish they had done it better than they did.
Assassins-Everybody's Got the Right the FIRST one. It is so amazing, and very intriguing.
Fiddler-Tradition, but they should have just done Tradition and not the bottle dance (although it was great)
Avenue Q-It was perfect. 'Nuff said.
Wonderful Town-Something other than what they did.
Caroline, or Change-Same I guess
Boy from Oz-I Go to Rio
Big River-Waiting for the Light to Shine

I stand by what is this feeling fo wiicked. I wish that Big River had perrformed... perhaps Leavings not the only way to go, or Waiting for the light to shine. I liked Caroline or Change but wish hat she hadn't been sick.
Provided there was no time limit....
Wicked - "Defying Gravity" The whole 8 minutes or whatever...
Assassins - "Another National Anthem"
Fiddler - same.
Avenue Q - "What Do You Do With a B.A. in English?" / "It Sucks To Be Me" The whole thing with all the dialogue etc...
Wonderful Town - same. I liked it.
Caroline, or Change - Same, but with a medley too with the rest of the cast so I could get more of an idea of the show....
Boy from Oz - "I Go to Rio" with the improv.

Side topic - Didn't the Tonys used to do medleys instead of picking one song from the show? I just vaguely recall that Mamma Mia did a few songs, right? I think that's a better idea than just choosing one song.
I'd like to have seen The Boy from Oz do "When I Get my Name in Lights". That kid, Mitchel David Federan, was unbelievable - the audience would have eaten him up! - and Jackman's follow-up verse could easily have been extended.
Wicked- Either the entire Defying Gravity or What is This Feeling?
The Boy From Oz- When I Get My Name in Lights (I love that kid!!!) or I Go To Rio
Assassins- The FIRST Everybody's Got the Right (but I guess they did the second because its shorter and Neil Patrick Harris is in it)
Fiddler- Same song : )
Wonderful Town- Something with more substance...that number would not make me want to see the show at all
I'm not as familiar with the other two shows, but I thought the Avenue Q number was great ; ) and the Caroline or Change number was...eh....didn't make me anymore interested in the show
but that kid doesn't sell tickets- hugh does
Why on EARTH didn't they do CONGA?
Can we pick ANY number???
One Day More - Les Miserables
The Old Red Hills of Home - Parade
Cop Song - Urinetown
Eastwick Knows - The Witches of Eastwick
We'll Meet Tomorrow - Titanic
Days Like This - Falsettos
Come in From the Outside - Taboo
On the Street - Rent
from the nominated show- i figured THAT was obvious
Although I must say, Mister Matt's ideas are creative and varied.

I wish WICKED would of done For Good or What is this feeling
ASSASSINS should of done a medley of what they did and unworthy of your love

Wicked-I thought Defying Gravity was the perfect song to do. It shows how much Idina earned her Tony.
Ave Q-Everyones a Little Bit Racist-its the funniest song in the show and everone is in it
Assassins-same one
Boy from Oz-same one-love Hugh and SJP
Wonderful Town-anything but the one they did
Fiddler-same one
Caroline-I thought Lots Wife was the best to show off Tonya. However since Anika was the only win for that show I think they should of done something with her in it like the act one finale with her and the kids. The only thing with that is Tonya isnt in it at all
I wish Assassins had done the opening rather than the finale. I think it's more effective to those who haven't experienced the show yet...plus it includes Marc Kudisch.
I kind of wish Wonderful Town did Conga.
Caroline, or Change - Lot's wife was the most memorable number in the show, but the way it was performed on Sunday made me wish Anika performed instead.
I also wish Wicked did more with Defying gravity...it just wasn't working.
I think "Fiddler" should have done "If I Was a Rich Man" because it's the most popular number from that show. "Wonderful Town" should have done "Conga" because it's a better number than "Swing" and it probably would've made people want to see the show more, although "Swing" showed off the Tony winning choreography.
Avenue Q was perfect- great number that involved everyone.
Wicked- I agree that 'What is this Feeling' would have been better. It involves both Elphaba and Glinda a little more (in DG, Glinda barely did anything at the Tonys), and it would show off the ensemble a little bit more. I also think the song is really adorable. But DG shows off Idina's range a little more, as someone said.
Boy from Oz-- definitley the same thing. It was just great.
Fiddler-- I think 'Tradition' worked. I liked it.
Caroline or Change-- I liked it, except that Tonya didn't sound that great. I heard she was sick, but it was a good number.
Wonderful Town-- I liked it, because it had the ensemble and Donna, with great choreography.
Assassins- I think they should have done something else. It was ok, but there are other numbers that would be better.

If I Were a Rich Man (If I Sing it Slower) has been performed mutliple times on the Tonys, even when Fiddler wasn't part of the season. It was nice to have something else for a change. Tradition and the Bottle Dance were excellent and exciting choices.
The Boy Next Door and Swing didn't really make me want to see either show, but the other numbers from the nominated shows interested me. I really wish the Big River tour would come to Chicago. I'm dying to see that production.
side note- did anyone else expect alfred molina to be WAY more winded after his stroll through the audience
