I have heard this from a couple of different sources- anyone else heard it? Any truth to it?

My personal opinions of the show aside (it was definitely not worthy of that all-out Times rave, in my opinion), I really, really think the chances are slim to none that it would make a profit on Broadway. I wish a sold-out, extended, well-received off Broadway run would be enough for a show like DETROIT. Nowadays, it seems like if any off Broadway show gets respectable reviews, it automatically transfers.

That being said, I absolutely would not be surprised if it did come to Broadway. I believe someone posted on here a few weeks ago saying a cast member confirmed it at the stage door, or something of the sort.

Worked out well for CLYBOURNE PARK.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

WIth folks like Amy Ryan and David schwimmer in the cast it'll make a profit, and i was the one who was told at the stage door that the plan is to transfer in the spring

Who told you that? Was it a cast member?

It would fit nice and snug at the Booth or Lyceum.

I don't think many people know who Amy Ryan is (sadly). And David Schwimmer, while a recognizable name, isn't going to be the sole reason this show recoups. Schwimmer appeared in CAINE MUTINY COURT MARTIAL a few years ago, and that ran 17 performances before closing. If it does make a profit on Broadway, it will be because of strong word of mouth. As good as they both are in the show, Ryan is a one-time Oscar nominee for a film that most people didn't see (again, sadly). And Schwimmer is a B list TV actor from, yes, a phenomenon of a show. But it ended ten years ago and I really don't think many FRIENDS fans are going to be rushing to see him, particularly in a show like DETROIT. He's a "name," but he's certainly not George Clooney or even Hugh Jackman.

And CLYBOURNE PARK didn't recoup, did it?

I think the only theater this could do well in would be The Booth.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

I saw Detroit this afternoon and asked folks at Playwrights about this, and they said it hadn't been decided yet. Like Wicked, I too thought it was good, but not deserving of the raves some critics gave it...now The Whale, which I saw tonight, was way better and just terrific, but I'll post about that on another thread. Hard to imagine either of these doing well on B'way, as much as I loved The Whale.

Nobody's pointed out yet that the original plan, after its premiere at Steppenwolf in Chicago, was to bring "Detroit" to New York on Broadway, not Off-Broadway.
January 11, 2011 BWW article: "Detroit will be presented on Broadway by Jeffrey Richards, Jerry Frankel and Debbie Bisno, in association with Steppenwolf Theatre Company"
I'm not sure why that plan was derailed. Money, probably.

Someone connected with the production told me that a transfer is in the works but it won't happen immediately.

Did it sell out at Playwrights? Isn't that pertinent? I saw it in previews, when it was filled.

If audience response means anything, the audience that I saw this with hated it. Can't imagine that word of mouth would sell tickets for this overhyped play. And I bought a subscription to PH just to see this...
