"IMO, has a lot more to it than Wicked does, and is far more substantial."
Yes, it does. But keep in mind how much more mature the RENTHEADS are then the Wicked tweenie boppers. They could care less about what Rent is, all they care is that the beloved green witch is in RENT. And while Wicked does have some messages of it's own, Rent's are more deep, and there is a lot more to the messages of Rent.
But keep in mind how much more mature the RENTHEADS are then the Wicked tweenie boppers.
haha, seriously? Are they? I think there's a larger amount of mature Rentheads than there are crazy Wicked fans, but that's not saying much -- for every "sane" (used subjectively) Renthead, there are probably 100 screaming freaks.
The debate about Hair is whether or not it's still relevant, even though it's quite clearly a period piece, and I suppose, in a similar stride, whether or not it's updatable, should be updated, etc, etc, but mostly how relevant those themes are today.

I was there, and honestly, was surprised at how well behaved people were. There were a few weird "incidents," like the person shouting weird stuff during Over The Moon, but I think things like the extensive cheering and standing ovations were to be expected. It wasn't really crazy in a bad way.
But keep in mind how much more mature the RENTHEADS are then the Wicked tweenie boppers.

Isn't that what I said. But to get back to the point of this thread teebz, no I dont think it is because you are young. Updated On: 5/7/06 at 02:55 PM
Hair may be okay, but I LOVE Galt McDermott's next show "Two Gentlemen of Verona" so much more. The music is really beautiful, the take on the Vietnam War is so much more complicated and layered and I was lucky enough to see the original with Raul Julia's athletic performance. But, no woody 'n bush so it's been largely forgotten by anyone who doesn't know who Tom O'horgan is.
And Stockard Channing, age 26, was in the chorus. Oh my god, sexy....
"What I was saying is that there seems to be so much superficiality in the way kids talk about musicals. Did anyone ever describe Alfred Drake as "dreamy"? I just want to help people who use Rent and Wicked as their gateway drug to find that Broadway hasso much more to offer."
actually, they probably did, though obviously they didn't use the word "Dreamy". but the point is is that producers have always cast eye candy to get the folks in. alfred Drake was considered very handsome in his day, and what about John Raitt in "The Pajama game"? everyone gushed over him coming out in the last scene with no top on.
and look at hollywood in the old days, with all the blonde bombshells, and beautys- Rita Heyworth, Joan Crawford, Garbo, and so on. entertainment has always been there to provide some extra incentive for people to come see the show.
today, the only thing that has changed is the nonchalantness of today's mtv youth. people were more descrete about sexuality and liking it back then.
sex sells, has always sold, and will always sell.
"I'm an American, Damnit!!! And if it's three things I don't believe in, it's quitting and math."
I know it selss. I'm still a buyer. But I find it fascinating to see kids relating to shows because of the sexiness of the cast. The whole Rent phenom. I saw the show one time in Toronto and it was more like a rock concert. Practically every seat in the first few rows were filed with teenyboppers who screamed when favorite cast members came onstage. It was weird. I don't eer remember anyone doing that to Jerry Orbach, or Raul Julia, or yes, Alfred Drake (okay I'm not that old). Did John Raitt attract bobbysoxers? And Wicked is another interesting cult. Friends in New York tell me their children have seen the sow dozens of times - at 100 dollars a ticket? God, I am in the wrong business.
Emcee, I've been going through the boards, and you are slowly becoming my god. I agree with everything you've said.
The problem with Rent was that the movie was released. Period. If the movie wasn't realeased, there would be no girls on the N train screaming Santa Fe, no Light My Candle being played, no bad directing (on Chris Columbus' part) and no people singing 'five hundred thirty four thousand nine hundred minutes'.
The only (and I mean ONLY) positive thing about the movie, is that it'll probably cause the show to stay on Broadway a lot longer.
And I think comparing Rent to Wicked is insane. Rent is a good show with good music, Wicked is not. Yes, I know Rent's book has some flaws, but Wicked? How many more flaws can you have without it being Lestat? The only positive thing about it was Joel Grey, and as much as I thought Idina was wonderful in Rent, and her Over the Moon Blew me away (not in the movie), she was okay in Wicked. And Chenowith annoys the s*it outta me. It's the same sort of hype, but when you have acutal material, stuff that wasn't just given the millions of dollars by a giant movie producer, it's much different.
And this current generation is so stupid... they're going to be crazy about different things.
LOL. Thank you very much. I think. Welcome, by the way.
However, I'm about to disagree with you. The movie *had* problems, but I don't think it *is* a problem. Regardless of the new fans that some people dislike, and the problems in the movie, I don't think it's easily up for dispute that the movie boosted ticket sales at the Nederlander. And that, if it keeps the show running, is a good thing. I think that to a lot of people who love the show, that might be enough to negate the smaller problems.
I think comparing Rent to Wicked is best done not through the shows themselves, but the followings they've gained -- and maybe in a loose sense, their messages. After all, that (in part) is why they've gained those followings.
I wasn't kidding, I have a problem with worshipping people...
The movie had many many problems, I know that a lot of movie fans don't act like insane fangirls, but a lot of them do. I think, someone said this on a board you were on (stalker POWER).... for every one meaningful, good fan, there are a thousand screaming fangirls.
I'm glad it's going to stay on Broadway, but sometimes, things being in the mainstream ruin them. I almost had a heart attack when I was at Rent 10. I overheard this girl when I was getting food. "I cried for two days when I found out Anthony was gay!" Well for one, he's bisexual, but is that worth it? Is it worth having these bimbos in the world, giving Rentheads a bad name? I'm really sorry, but they are.
Wicked... Rent... same... message? The reason I think that Wicked gained a following is that the fangirls (I have proof, I spent a weekend in the suburbs with my crazy fangirl, uptalking cousins) love watching Chenowith bouncing around the stage in that hideous pink dress singing popular. They don't get that it's a politcal message. Rent has substance.
Well, I shouldn't get into my art and commerce rant, which I'm getting quite close to, so I'm going to end this rant.
Well, I have to admit that I don't really take to being the object of people's worship, because it's kind of screwed me over before, but I thank you for the compliment. :)
I said that, about the fan "ratio." But then again, every sane fan is someone else's psychotic stalker -- it's all relative, so it's not really an easy thing to say, you know? Hell, I've been told I'm a good fan, and I've been told I'm a nutjob. So...
The Anthony thing, IMO, is just moot 'cause he's taken, but... whatever. It makes me laugh, a lot... even if they're scary. And the reality is that when the show's in bad shape, which is overall what matters... the weird fans didn't make it that way.
Same message in the sense that they both deal with "fitting in." I said I meant it loosely. They watered down the majority of the politics, and that pisses me off.
Well, I do feel bad for some movie fans who have been labeled as "Crazy Fangirl Movie Fans" just because they live in Idaho, or whatever, and couldn't see the show. I've been called a crazy fan hundreds, no thousands of times. Other times, I've been called someone who really understands rent and there should be more of me. Depends on your opinion. I don't talk about Rent to people, unless I'm online, because they don't understand it. For example, someone asked me yesterday, why do you like Rent so much? I said, word for word, "give me you're email address, and I'll get back to you. It'll be around, eh, twenty or so pages, maybe longer." I never emailed her, because even if I took time out to write a babbling report of everything that Rent is about, she still wouldn't understand it. Oh, the irony.
every sane fan is someone else's psychotic stalker Yes, I mean, I did stalk Anthony for lets say... a week, but then I got out of it. Jesse now has my heart and soul, but that's because of Rent10 and his performance, not becase "OHMIGODDDD HEZ SO HOTT!111!!"
And, yeah... she might have been a hooker. I wasn't so sure... I was leaning towards yes, though
