Hehe, I think there needs to be a BWW rule, if your post is longer than two paragraphs long, then 99 percent of the time its far too self-righteous to be posted.
So I was sitting in my cubicle today, and I realized, ever since I started working, every single day of my life has been worse than the day before it. So that means that every single day that you see me, that's on the worst day of my life.~Office Space
"my favorite show in my limited experience is RENT ive seen it 6 times and never get sick of it"
You and thousands of others. Don't worry about it.
"but some people on the board seem to think its overrated or just not that good"
The same could be said of every musical ever written. You are allowed to like any show you want for any reason you want. But
I think the majority of the people who say that probably saw the show years after the original cast departed, stunt casting began, and the show became a poorly negected machine to churn out performance after performance, with little direction other than basic blocking. The actors know the songs and the dialogue and their blocking and that is pretty much all they put into it any more. After seeing the original cast, I was a huge fan of the show, but when I saw it the summer of 2004, though I only spent $40 for the ticket, I felt like I wasted my money. And I was embarassed for my boyfriend who had been waiting years to finally see the show (and was sorely disappointed). It was horrible. The producers either need to clean house or close it. The set and the band are the only things that resemble the original production any more.
"3) The theater, need I say more?"
Yes, you do. What's wrong with it?
"4) The staging, need I say more."
Yes, you do. What's wrong with it?
"5) The characters: I found myself hating them because I felt they had screwed up their own lives, not 'the man.'"
They never claimed it was "the man". That makes no sense. Characters like Roger and Mimi openly admit their faults and attempt to change. They don't blame their mistakes on anyone else.
"6) The theme of challening authority. I hate the simplistic teenage idea that all authority is bad, especially on something like collecting the rent. Come on!"
Nowhere in the show does it claim that all authority is bad. If you pay attention to the story, there are two main issues at hand:
1. Mark and Roger didn't pay rent in the past because Benny allowed them to live for free (though the film muddied this by opening with the title song, which pretty much destroyed the exposition; one of many mistakes in the film). Benny then blackmails them into helping to stop Maureen's protest or they will have to not only start paying rent, but pay all the back rent for the time they have been living there. Later, Benny locks them out of the building and they have nowhere to go. That's not about challenging authority, it's about blackmail and betrayal.
2. Benny's new building would displace many homeless people who have created their own tenements on the land. Maureen's protest is in favor of protecting the homeless. It's a liberal protest against capitalistic greed out of compassion for the homeless. Benny's involvement personalizes this situation for all of them.
The police are portrayed as bad, but they are not challenged. And when you think about it, it's not a completely unfair depiction.
"7) The ending. REALLY,REALLY,REALLY, CHEESY!!!!!!!!!!"
That statement describes 99% of all Broadway musicals. It's not specific to Rent at all.
"What can you expect from a bunch of seitan worshippers?" - Reginald Tresilian
"1) It is dated, as stated above. 2) Some good songs, but many(like the tile song) are just hard rock music that isn't very appealing to me, 3) The theater, need I say more? 4) The staging, need I say more. 5) The characters: I found myself hating them because I felt they had screwed up their own lives, not "the man." 6) The theme of challening authority. I hate the simplistic teenage idea that all authority is bad, especially on something like collecting the rent. Come on! 7) The ending. REALLY,REALLY,REALLY, CHEESY!!!!!!!!!! "
There are lots of valid reasons to dislike RENT, but these are completely off-base.
Did you actually SEE the show, because apparently you didn't understand the storyline.
"You just can't win. Ever. Look at the bright side, at least you are not stuck in First Wives Club: The Musical. That would really suck. "

"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli
I normally would have seen that coming, but I wrongly assumed some people wouldn't take to making fun of me on my celebrity day.

I keep on hearing that someone needs to go and in and clean up the show. And how it's been getting worse and worse since the OBC. I've never seen the stage show and was wondering what's wrong with it?
I have to wonder how the hell this thread has lasted this long. Personally I ignored it as soon as I saw that teebz posted it due to his recent trend of rather pointless threads...
