exactly BWG2- These people have to go through packs of screaming fans normally 8 times a week. If i had to go through that, after a while i would be a bit ticked as well. Give the nice people credit and as for the people who may not want to be attacked by screaming fans for a piece of their shirt just let them be.
from some of the behavior I have seen from some theatregoers who wait at the stage door, I am shocked that some of the cast members don't tell some them to shove the Playbills up their @$$es. I don't blame the ones who don't like to stay.

Unless it's in London where nobody cares about musical theatre stars. I'd be interested to know how many wait for Nathan Lane here. I can tell you that it would be severely reduced on New York.. I've only waited a couple of times for people and once was Judi Dench and Maggie Smith - only 16 people waited. The other was Matthew Perry - about 100 people.
of course the Melanie woman was nice. After the srap she made the audience suffer through, she didn't want to get clobbered by an angry mob. bad enough she looks like melted Barbie Doll with a haircut from a six year old... why would she want to make it worse?
Well! I went to the stage door after Wicked and asked for Idina's autograph. She threatened me with physical violence and then said she'd eat my children. I pointed out that I didn't have any children, and it took seven obsessive teenage girls to get her off me.
oh i know MD- i only went to the stage door once for Wicked for that very reason. It is insane. Its worse than the Furby craze of the 90s sometimes. I's almost sad... But one of the best stage doors to wait by is Avenue Q- When i went last time, there were about... 10 people and every actor stopped and talked with everyone for a couple minutes and were really great.
BB3-- when I went to the stage door for Avenue Q, John Tartaglia's junior prom date was the only person waiting other than my sister and I. It was great!
Oh, I forgot to mention the lady outside of a LSOH matinee who loudly announced, "I just want to GRAB his ASS!" about Hunter Foster. Complete with hand motions. I think he heard her...
I waited at the stage door for Ave. Q--the only time I've ever done it except for TBFO and that was just to get a glimpse of my husband, Hugh--I wasn't even trying to get close.
Anyway, at Q everyone I met was LOVELY!!!! Ann, Stephanie, Rick, Jordan, and Barrett...who would be my other husband if he switched teams.
The Wicked stage door has really calmed down alot recently. The past few times I've been there, there were not that many people. I remember when it used to be like rows deep with people but now it's one row along the barricades sometimes two. They did lengthen the barricades but it's still nice to know that you want get crushed against the bars as people try to grab a piece of Idina, JLT or Joey.
The only person who I ever saw be outright mean to people was Bebe Neuwirth but that was years ago. I don't think that people HAVE to sign but I think if they decline they can at least be polite about it.
You know, I have to agree with the posters who pointed out (and it rarely gets mentioned) how obnoxious people can be at the stage door.
I am by no means a big star, but I always sign things when asked. I've had people ask for an autograph and then criticize my signature, tell me they didn't like it and they wanted me to sign something else more legibly, etc.
I also had a collector hand me a magic marker to sign a piece of memorabilia in a plastic case and when he didn't like the way i signed it, he pulled out a bottle of Windex and a rag, sprayed it, wiped it clean, and asked me to do it again. I'm not joking. I did it about three times before it was to his satisfaction.
It is never a hassle to sign things for polite people, unless you're in a rush. Personally, I try to budget time for signing, or else I pull on a baseball cap and kind of slip out quietly so I don't have to say no. But a few assholes can really make you throw up your hands and say "why bother?" Some people feel like they are really entitled to a piece of you, and that's where it gets invasive.
i RARELY (only on special occasions) as for a pic and an autograph, but I like to hang around a while after and say "great show" to the people i though really stood out if i see them on the sidewalk.. I don't hunt them down though...
and you better BELIEVE that i have NO problem saying something to the rude people i see there. i've done it before and i know i will do it again.
by the way, i LOVE your screenname elphaba.scares.me
