I think the off-putting part about One Song Glory is the drum beat. I think in the original, that section was carried entirely by the guitar with echo for its rhythm. Adding the light drums gives the verse a bit of a "groove" that seems maybe a little mismatched.

Because of the introspective nature of the song and the use of the echoes in the original arrangement, I figured an enhanced version would be dripping with reverb and bass punches. Well, many different options, I guess. As long as they don't replace the guitar with a synth violin, like in the Swedish recording... *shudder*

I swear it's just the streaming. They almost all sound weird and very tinny. If you compare Season of Love on the audio player and in, say, the trailer, they sound different. So I'm sure it'll be fine when the soundtrack comes out.

It too was a little off-putting to hear all the new arrangements because I've listened to the OBCR so many times, but songs that I didn't like when I first saw the show are now some of my favourites, so I'm sure I'll learn to love the new recording.

Plus I just can't not love Adam's voice. *g*

it sounds really good except for the crappy audio. i really love the Tango: Maureen. I'm so excited. I swear, Anthony's voice will always sound the same to me. Hehehe.

As for One Song Glory and Today 4 U, I'm trying not to judge before the movie comes out, although it does sound a bit off.

at first i didnt think these clips were as good as the OcR. but then i realized its not that the clips are bad, its prolly just b/c ive been used to the OCR for so long, so these will take a bit of getting used to. and, since its going to be in a movie, there are going to be background tracks, b/c a broadway sounding arrangement and everything would seem out of place in a movie.

In the clips I've heard of him on the site, Anthony sounds considerably less .... squeaky(?) than he did on the OCR.

after hearing seasons of love, i was thinking, wow. this is going to be great. After listening to this, ugh. I know, i know, bad audio. But- the accompaniment for the whole thing is about karaoke cd quality. It sounds really fabricated and almost MIDI- not rock. Also, Wilson sounds kindof not Angely in Today 4 U. It sounds forced to me (TodAY on avenue Aye) Rosario is awesome. Shame on us for doubting her. I am impressed with Santa Fe, except for the irritating ding ding dings, which now sound kindof like the choir from Sister Act. I like the OBCR so so so so much better.

Oh please, Rosario sounds like some kid from a high school production of "Rent". And this with all of the help that "Hollywood's magic" can offer.

Go hear her live in "Two Gentlemen of Verona" and you'll get the accurate and thoroughly dissapointing version of the real Rosario.

It's absolutely amazing what Hollywood can do with nothing.

RENTaholic, that's EXACTLY how I feel! lol "I WILL love these clips and I WILL love this movie, no matter what!" Haha it's all good though. Remember guys, a couple weeks ago we all heard Adam sing LIVE on tv and nobody complained about his voice then!

Slacker, if you think Rosario sounds like a high schooler, then I'd love to know what school you went to, cause, uh, girls at my school did NOT sound like that LOL and I don't think you can compare her singing in RENT to Verona because they are completely different kinds of music. I was very impressed with her.

my issue with Adam's glory, which has always been the case after hearing the latest Broadway cast versions, is that it is very start-and-stop to me. It doesn't flow, at least to my ears. It sounded like "From the soul of a young man *pause* a young man *pause* find...." I've always liked the way that more current Roger's make the sound flow more. But, in Adam's defense, that has always been the way he sings Glory, on the OBCR, and if you go back and listen to the reunion show they had. And I agree with whoever said above that Glory sounds tinny because you're just hearing the drum, not the guitar.

You also to remember that we are listening to these clips and envisioning what we know to be the actions taking place on stage. When I listen to Glory, I'm seeing Adam sitting on the table, running back and forth, trying to "find" himself. Who knows what we will be seeing while we hear the songs?

I agree. I am by no means a Pascal groupie. This new version of Glory reminds me of one of why I don't like to listen to recordings of Adam. It's too choppy for my tastes.

This version of Glory seems even more choppy than his original version.

That being said, it was a different experience to see him live as Roger and I loved him every time I saw him.

Hopefully the movie will produce the same effect.

although I know there is probably no chance of this happening, I really wish Anthony is reading all of our concerns and could come on and explain some stuff, make us feel a little better. He was really good at doing that before, when everyone was really concerned about the casting and the production in general.

you know, the more i think about it, Glory happens towards the beginning of the movie, when roger is withouty mimi and still bitter, hurt, alone etc. so i'm sure his voice/interpretations of the songs as the story progresses just reflect character development - does that make sense? i bet Another Day, What You Own, and teh I SHould Tell You (or whatever it is) will be softer and different. But almost 10 yrs later, the actors are able to bring more to the roles. i'm sure it will be really great - just different.

Someone said that Glory sounds "tinny." I'll repeat what's been said before; these recordings are probably not being played at the highest quality. For example, before Adam's second CD was realeased, one song was put on his website - and people complained and groaned and whined about how he and the band just didn't sound good. The clip's quality was toned down to prevent people wanting to download it instead of purchasing the music, or to prevent them from wanting to download it just in order to have it early on. On the CD, that song sounds just as great as the rest of them. I do think that's what's going on here, because I heard a sort of unusual tinny quality in most of the music. I really just think that it's something we have to get used to, since we're all SO accustomed to the other recording. The voices on the originals have gotten better over the years; not worse.

I also sincerely think, about Adam in specific, that some of the "choppiness" you're hearing is him -gasp!- acting. His acting chops have grown so much over the past nearly ten years, that of course things are going to change. And if I stand by any belief I have about this movie, I stand by the belief that he's going to be perfect; if there is *anything* Adam can do, and do beautifully, it's Roger.

PS - Fantabulous, don't be so sure that Anthony isn't reading - just because he hasn't been posting doesn't mean he doesn't see you. Who knows? Maybe he can try to comfort us a bit. Really dissapointing

Emcee, I'm sure he's reading - but he hasn't posted in so long I figure he won't do it now. Unless things get a bit out of hand, which I think they kind of are at this point.

EverythingisRent,

Any of the girls at the high school I went to could have blown away Rosario Dawson vocally...and they still can -- without any of the studio help Rosario is getting either.

Really dissapointing

After listening to that caterwalling I realize that any of the boys could have, and still can, do better as well.

I'm not panning "Rent" the movie because I haven't seen it. But why would any true "Rent" fans stand for Rosario's obvious vocal shortcomings in the movie? "Rent" the movie is a home run before anyone comes to the plate! Why put in a pinch hitter with no record? "Rent" the movie is like being dealt a Royal Straight Flush. Why break it up by asking for a wildcard?

Rosario may have good looks but good looks don't make up for that voice, particularly in a musical. Casting Rosario Dawson as "Mimi" was a big mistake. I hope "Rent" the movie survives it.

With the wild popularity of "Rent" the musical, thanks in large part to the hard work of Broadway actors, I suppose that it will overcome this error.

It's just that the movie could have been SOOOOO much better if it had only been cast properly.

Do you really think Daphne is that much more of a singer than Rosario, slacker? Who do you think is a good Mimi vocally?

MrMidwest,

Any of the Broadway "Mimi's" would have been an INFINTELY better choice than Rosario Dawson. They did the role eight times a week. They were all good enough for Broadway and Rosario isn't. Doesn't that matter to you?

I really can't say whether or not Rosario is good enough for Broadway, but there are people with less talent than her who have been on Broadway. I'm perfectly fine with how her voice sounds. I just hope I can say the same about her acting when I see the movie.

Well, only time will tell. Judging by the rush to get her any sort of credits possible, I'm sure the producers of "Rent" the movie are hedging their bets.

And you know that voice would NEVER make it on Broadway.

I really do hope that it sounds better on the actual cd because besides one or two songs, it sounded like a one of those "Sing Like RENT" karaoke cd. But, like Marquise said, it could be just the compressed file. But, please God, just let it be that.

Ok, after listening to it again it actually sounds better than it did the first time. It was probably just because I wasn't use to the new arrangements but now that I have listened to it a few more times, it makes me even more EXCITED. For all those that didn't like it, just listen to it again.

and thank you Whiskedaway
