"So Yeston and Kopit's "Phantom" is coming to Broadway?"
I wish!
Phantom of the Opera needs to be switched the Yeston's "Phantom". It's about time.

I agree, it looks so cheap, like someone was playing around in Photoshop.
The original artwork is much better. Leave well enough alone.

Yikes...it's not terrible, but it's not at all an improvement. The brilliance of Phantom's original ad campaign (as with other 80s hits like Cats and Les Mis) was its simple, logo-ready design. One look at that full white mask on a black background was all you needed to see to think "Phantom", and was thrilling enough on its own.
A rule of thumb for Phantom's graphic designers of late--or for designers of any show--should be to throw the crazy Photoshop effects out the window. Take a page out of Rent's book these days. They've reverted back to the spontaneous black-on-white design of their 1996 billboards, and it's infinitely more striking than any of the cracked-out color-fests they've used in the past decade.

Posted: 3/15/08 at 3:48pmI personally prefer the classic "black with mask & rose" poster or the "purple with smoke" record-breaking one. I'm not a fan of this new artwork. Glad that it hasn't completely replaced the old logo yet.
#33re: new phantom artwork...
Posted: 3/15/08 at 6:46pmstick with the old one, it's timeless. I hate that purple with smoke one - it looked just like the newer beauty and the beast logo (that's a BAD thing).

Posted: 3/15/08 at 11:19pmi think the new logo is terrible to the nth degree. i think the old logo is almost synonymous with the success of the show - in that Mackintosh's marketing for all of his major shows have been focuses on these simple, striking images.

Posted: 3/15/08 at 11:45pmWhy? I mean it doesn't look bad, but what is the point after 20 years.
#37re: new phantom artwork...
Posted: 3/15/08 at 11:57pmThat is the point. It's to celebrate the 20th anniversary. The purple one was to celebrate the show becoming the longest running.

I was in Times Square today. There has been a Phantom billboard there with the purple background with the mask and the rose and on top saying that its the longest running show on Broadway. I didn't see the full thing today. But, I saw that same billboard had a black background and I saw the P in the new font that goes with the new design.
I think that they are slowly phasing out the original (and better) logo for this one. I don't think it will be long before they change the poster for the show in Shubert Alley from the original smashed glass typeface with the black background and the white mask to the new crappy one.

The old logo's been around 20 years, anyone else think it's time for it to retire?
Actually, I think it's long past time for the show to retire. But who needs to beat a dead horse?

Apparently, you do.
This is perhaps the stupidest marketing move ever.

*shrug* Guilty as charged. The longer I go without sleep, the snarkier I get. Stupid insomnia.
Regardless of my feelings on the show itself, the new poster is rather hideous.

Huh? I can't figure this out.

Shubert Alley's poster has been changed as of today.
Good news tho! I do love the new Disney advertising, and all 3 Disney shows are finally next to eachother in Shubert Alley! It always bothered me that they were separated. Phantom switched spots with Poppins?

Serino Coyne has it changed on their website too. I worship at the alter of Nancy Coyne, though, so you won't hear a bad word from me about it.
It's not my favorite piece of artwork to have emerged recently, but really, like it's going to harm ticket sales? Phantom will run for 800 jillion more years no matter what. And the new artwork has put it back on the radar of at least 30 posters here on BWW (who took the time to comment on it). Sounds like it's doing it's job.

"And the new artwork has put it back on the radar of at least 30 posters here on BWW (who took the time to comment on it). Sounds like it's doing it's job."
true, but I'm pretty sure the reason they changed the artwork was to draw people in, create positive reactions and get people interested and excited for the show again. Have people say "Oh hey look a new poster for POTO. Looks great, I'd like to go back and check the show out again" or "Oh, POTO! We haven't seen that yet after all these years and I just noticed this new poster blah blah let's go."
The general feeling for this new artwork (on this thread atleast) is that, quite frankly, it sucks.
I haven't looked at this thread in awhile, and looking back at the new poster it seems even more ridiculous to me. The whole switching to a singular title kinda bugs me a little and seems a bit pompous (though after 20 years they have the right) but what kills it is the Phantom himself, he makes me want to laugh, coming out of the mist with that blank look on his face (which is all you can see of him, why just a cut out of his face?)...it's a joke.

Well, it's better than that awful Vegas poster with the Phantom seducing some random girl in a red dress with the slogan "Be seduced."
But is that even a human?
