re: nudity...

what is the whole turn off with chelsea boys? could someone explain?

maybe i should ask this on the i adore Somms thread...

re: nudity...

It's because chelsea boys seem to be mostly clone-like figures - when I take a walk through chelsea now, I seem to see the same guy over and Over and OVER again - shaved head, muscles, tatoos, shaved/waxed body...they seem to all want to look exactly the same. Doesn't do it for me. I'm for individualism. And Body Hair. And maturity. Leave the twinks and the clones to someone who likes that kind of thing.

re: nudity...

again we stoop to the lowest common denominator. naked..just cheap live porn trying to convince us it is theatre.
naked does not belong on the stage ...suspension of disbleief..make me believe you are naked...if the rest of you want to see naked..good looord go to a porn theatre..or even better.get a date

re: nudity...

SEE WHAT I WANNA SEE has a disclaimer on the website (and if/when you call to order tickets) that the show contains nudity. Not sure to what extent and who, but we shall see in a week.

A Good Nightmare Comes So Rarely,
P genre

P.S. LaChiusa has a propensity for nudity in his shows... who could forget Toni Collette, and, well, everyone else in some form of undress in THE WILD PARTY... or HELLO AGAIN. And Kudisch has the distinct honor of appearing nude in both THE WILD PARTY (dimly lit) and THE HIGHEST YELLOW (brightly lit), could this be #3?

re: nudity...

"[Nudity] does not belong on the stage."

Not having scene Naked Macbeth I can't comment on it directly, but I don't understand what the big deal with stage nudity is. If it's relative to the plot/character, what's the problem? Even if it isn't, I still don't see why it "doesn't belong on the stage."

Don't get me wrong. I've never gone to see a play specifically because there's nudity in it, and, having appeared nude in several different productions, I find it creepy when someone goes to the theatre specifically for the nudity (in that case, I agree that renting a porn would be a hell of a lot cheaper - and more graphic), but I don't understand comments like "suspension of disbleief.. make me believe you are naked." How is that suspension of disbelief? It's like saying "Suspension of disbelief. Make me believe you're wearing lipstick, instead of just wearing it."

re: nudity...

How is being nude relative to a plot..its called acting not pronotgraphy.
the idea is the make the audience believe you are naked...good god this is shocking that people still think that being nude on stage si some sort of call to art. or an art form it self..imagination is part of the art. i am so ashamed that people cant actually sit down and watch a play or musicalwithout fussing over somoones asss or boobs...god...just sickens me.

It's shocking to me that people are still so uptight about the human body that the mere mention of it is referred to as "pronotgraphy."

re: nudity...

I was once in a play called Head Games which was a send-up of the trend of gay-themed plays with nudity. The nudity was tongue in cheek and relative to the plot, as it was spoofing plays that are known for their nudity.

I was nude in Hair (as was most of the cast) at the end of act one, the moment where it becomes so important to make the world hear the tribe's message that they are willing to stand there naked to get people to pay attention.

I played Prior Walter in Angles in America and I was nude in the scene in the doctor's office, where the character was being examined.

In all three of the cases, there was nothing sexual about the nudity.

i am so ashamed that people cant actually sit down and watch a play or musicalwithout fussing over somoones asss or boobs

Isn't that what you're doing?

re: nudity...

while I'm all for nudity in the context of the show, if it's just a perv you're after, why don't you just go to a strip club? It'd be cheaper.

Avigdor, you can't be a real person. Too priceless.

re: nudity...

There are only two times I can remember seeing a show with nudity in it where I feel it made sense in context of the show - in the Broadway productions of Angels In America (Prior's examination) and Take Me Out. You couldn't PAY me to go see something like Naked Boys Singing or Naked Macbeth. What utter nonsense.

Kringas,
I couldn't agree with you more.

re: nudity...

Yay for you, Kringas. I'm currently involved in a production of Hair. I see no problem with the nudity in the context of the show. The show is not centered around it, but if used well, nudity can be very effective.

re: nudity...

NAKED BOYS SINGING is utter nonsense - that's the point. They don't pass it off as art - it's essentially just a nude revue - there's nothing wrong with that.

re: nudity...

In Holland it's actually difficult to see a subsidized production that DOES NOT contain nudity. Everybody seems to be naked here. And this MAY sound too good to be true, but Last year I saw, among others, Taming of the Shrew, Othello, Streetcar, Pillowman.....all with full nudity under bloody harsh lights. But then again, we're Dutch......
