Why not?
She's not cool enough for the British people.

Posted: 8/22/07 at 1:22pmHey I think its great. If you are going to revive a show, do something new with it. I think if Larson himself had lived (and RENT had still had the success it did) he probably would have updated and reorchestrated it. I don't believe it was ever his wish for it to be a period piece, which the Broadway production clearly now is.

White Mimi? why not?
White Joanne? Why not?
Both of them are hot
As long as it doesn't set a precendent . . .

I keep switching between wanting to find it awesome, and finding it legitimately kind of nauseating.
Craww - I can't even see the photo (no MySpace at work) and I feel the same way. The idea of pop remixes of... well, most of the songs in the show... makes me want to throw up a little.
EDIT: Oh, and I love Idina, but she is about 10 years too old to play Maureen on stage.

I love these publicity pics; I think they look vibrant, fresh and interesting. Much better than the current pink and blue Broadway logo. I can't wait to see this now.
I also wish the cast was a bit more diverse, though. As we've got a white Joanne, I'm hoping for a black Maureen.

I hope not. I hated Closer to Heaven.

I'm not a huge fan of what's running right now in New York, so i'm really hoping for - excuse the cliche - some new life to be brought into this piece...
and for it to be recorded!

I think the core of Rent's appeal has been its intertwining of geeky and sexy, earnest and cool, grit and style. This production seems to be aiming for only half of that equation. The Kylie Minogue connection is not encouraging either. Her presentation strikes me as slick and superficial.
For what it's worth, I attended the NY show last night with a middle-aged friend who had never seen or heard it before. He loved it.

Posted: 8/22/07 at 7:02pmive not been a big champion of this new production, the idea of turning it in to a pop opera makes me want to scream , that been said i will wait and see how it turns out

I think this is really exciting. I find the whole idea very appealing. I do find the lack of diversity a little alarming, but have a feeling it will find it's way. To be honest, the whole West End scene isn't that diverse in the first place.
Have there been rumors of Kylie actually playing Maureen? I'm not a huge Kylie fan, but seems kind of inevitable, doesn't it?
I love Idina, but I think she would distract from a new concept. She isn't the most adaptable of actresses. Her Maureen probably wouldn't change much. (ducks from Idina-heads)

Sorry to jack, but....
PersonofInterest - I tried to reply to your PM, but it says you don't accept them.
Carry on...
Rent is awesome and so on and so forth.
Idina.

Posted: 8/23/07 at 4:51pmI'm starting to really like this message bored, on the West End one they are not willing to even give this show a try, but i'm really excited about it, I think it will be great, I have a ticket for the first preview, so I'll get straight on here and tell you all what I thought

Posted: 8/23/07 at 7:44pmThis production - as explained by its own producers and exemplified by its casting - is clearly an attempt to de-claw Rent and turn it into something the Dirty Dancing crowd of tourists and non-theater-going suburbanites will find palatable. Can this really be a good thing?

Not in the way you described it, no. But what exactly did the producers say?
I really am just confused as to how they are going to make this work, given these images from the Myspace page. Where are these people going to be living? Is it going to be broke artists in the 21st century?

Posted: 8/23/07 at 8:34pmThe casting could backfire. Take every criticism you've heard about the spoiled, lazy, whining Rent characters and add to it the fact that they're all amazingly beautiful. Mark doesn't even need to sell out to Buzzline when he could be supporting everyone with a lucrative male modeling career.

lol, seriously. You totally nailed it.
And none of them look hard up for money. By the looks of these pictures, they are all definitely making their weekly facial and hair appointments.
In all honesty, I want to see a great, updated version of Rent - if it's done right. I'm just skeptical by nature, and these pictures aren't doing much to alleviate that at this point.

As said before, maybe the photos are not them in their costumes. Perhaps it's just to get some attention.
But I agree with you.

"I love these publicity pics; I think they look vibrant, fresh and interesting. Much better than the current pink and blue Broadway logo."
That is true. I hate the Broadway logo right now; I wish they would go back to what it was BEFORE the movie.
That being said, get your hands the hell off the music and leave it alone... It's perfect the way it is. And craww and misschung, I comepletely agree with you. (Craww, you're always good for a laugh.)
eta: P.S. - I am slowly growing more frightened about this production the more I look at the ads... Original RENT has a gritty look to its original (and superior) ads. This looks far too polished and if it's appropriate for the production, then I am very unhapy about this production.
