Can't believe Brooke Shields messed up so badly in the opening... almost felt bad for her.
I'm sure that didn't sell any Adams Family tickets.

If anything, she handled it in a cute way.

Actually that made me kind of want to see her in Addams Family...

It was sad, but cute. I think I fell in love with her tonight, despite her mess-ups. Anyway, I just wish they didn't do the pretend "audience impromptu singing."

That b*tch is f%ckin' funny and cute!
Lip readers, what exactly did she say during her presentation speech?
I don't think anyone believed they were impromtu, but her bit ended up spontaneous and funny.

Brooke is so talented. She handled it perfectly and agree with the poster who said it made them want to see her in The Adams Family.

She's got it. Dug her in Leap Of Faith too.

Brooke rocks

I find it a bit endearing to see our stars so human.

I watched it from Times Square and she dropped both audible s-bomb and f-bomb in one sentence during her presenter speech.

Call me old-fashion, but I can only think of one s-bomb.

dshnookie meant both: the s-bomb and f-bomb, not "both the s-bombs".

Am I the only one who didn't think she handled it that well? Yeah she came off cute, but it made me frightened to see her in the Adams Family.
Sure, I couldn't imagine how I would handle that situation, but I cringled when she started to shake.

Jealous? I ain't jealous. I can take on these fellas whateva.

Actually, I'd like to know what Vanessa Redgrave said when NPH said "Vanessa Redgrave-straight!"

I thought Brooke cussing was the best performance she's ever given. Now I don't need to see her in a show!

Brooke was fine! She completely screwed up, but she was funny and endearing, even as a mess. As she mentioned, she had agreed to do it right before the telecast. And even though she dropped the ball, I still enjoyed her and NPH together, giving it shot.

I don't feel sorry for her, nor do I think she was embarrassing or deserving of pity. Embarrassed, yes. But not embarrassing. At least it was a genuine moment.

If anyone deserves a "poor so-and-so" comment it's Christy Brinkley, who seemed to be hyperventilating while trying to win an Oscar as she finished her setup speech. It was so cluelessly and creepily over-the-top. Like Marilyn Monroe on helium as she stands before the Lord after winning the lottery.

That was a real WTF! moment, not Brooke Shields.

Christie Brinkley...bringing Barbie back to Broadway, one big dress at a time!

There are no do-overs on Broadway!

Actually, the choreographer of my shows used to tell the chorus "If you screw up, do it with style, cause baby, that's your solo!"

Is it just me, but I thought that Brooke Shields was obviously high/drunk during her Tony snafus? NOT cute at all!

"..no do-overs on Broadway!"
Are you kidding me?! Some of the best moments of Broadway are those moments when you are reminded this is a unique form of entertainment because it is all live. When some glitch occurs and they go back and have a do-over you have just been granted a moment that no one outside the audience that night will see. When something happens and an actor or an entire cast just loose it and the audience is laughing so hard the show stops and the moment of "reality" is broken. The cast acknowledges it's happened and does a do-over to get everyone back. Those moments of LIVE theatre are unique and special and endearing. They prove our "stars" to be human.
I know I'm not only in my reveling of those rare moments that make the night special for that one audience - Spiderman sold thousands of tickets to people hoping they would see a do-over.
I say - Thank you, Brooke! For not only being human, but for making a moment real and stopping a show from feeling slick and cheesy. She was beyond endearing. She was funnier than than what they actually wrote for her. PLUS - she has people talking about her and about Adams Family. And the show didn't have to pay for the publicity. Mission accomplished.

I agree. Shields was funny and real. As for Christy Brinkley (who looks absolutely surreal for her age, I'll give her that. Bravo!) that was a real mess. She sounded so fake and artificial. Makes me wonder what she was doing there at first place.

Sorry, but again, I am surprised at the show of support for an obviously high or drunk Brooke Shields who messed up TWICE during the Tonys, including having to be bleeped out on National TV! I guess I believed that Broadway implies a measure of PROFESSIONALISIM, as opposed to the "I messed up so just do another take" world of movies and TV.

In contrast, Christie Brinkley was able to read her lines without messing up, however, she recieved a considerable amount of criticism on this thread. What gives?

Calling Brooke "obviously high" is an awful accusation to make. You should be ashamed. Maybe she did have a couple drinks, but I assume many people there did as well. Brooke has proved time and time again that she is a true professional and really enjoys being on the Broadway stage.

First of all, Brooke didn't appear "obviously high or drunk" to me, and I think your assessment is way off-base.

Just like Will42 pointed out, even though she screwed up, she was real about it. Flustered and embarrassed? Sure, but those are real emotions, and they came off that way. Add in NPH's joke about being "completely spontaneous," and it was an enjoyable moment in the show.

Christie comes on and only made one flub toward the end (and looked horrified because of it), but there was nothing real about her. She "acted" and spoke like one of those robots at Disneyland on the wrong speed.

And I agree with allofmylife---it's how you handle the screwup. Show me you're a real person with genuine emotions, and I'll give you a pass. It becomes part of the entertainment. If you act like a freak or that it didn't happen or you have no sense of "style" then it becomes painful to watch. I don't care what you're saying or how well you say it. Go to the end of the line.

EDIT: Adding that I don't mean to imply the emotions have to be real ... they just have to come off as real. It's all an illusion anyway.
