Posted: 8/24/12 at 8:56pmI think they'll record Cry Baby someday. If Carrie can finally get a cast recording after all these years then Cry Baby can get one too. Just hold on Bryan. (Since apparently, the demo isn't good enough for you.)

But VERGE was composed by a 3 time Tony nominee (Verge is his third) and had a cast including Patti LuPone, Sherie Rene Scott, Laura Benanti, and Brian Stokes Mitchell. Most of the flop scores that Bryan and others cry about cannot match Verge's level of artistry and greatness. They are also not Tony nominated scores.....

Posted: 8/25/12 at 3:26pmWasn't it a husband and wife team who used to make some of the rare recordings--Baker's Wife beind an example (and I assume funding being a reason they could only bring the leads in).

Posted: 8/26/12 at 1:15pmMany of the lesser-known Off-Broadway shows have their recordings funded bgy the composers themselves, because it greatly increases the likelihood of the shows being done by regional theatres. I've often been contacted by theatre groups saying, "We're thinking of doing (insert name of show here), but there's no cast recording. We know you did it at your theatre. Do you have a bootleg recording of it?" These groups are just afreaid to attempt a show if they don't have a recording of it to study.

If a show wants to be licensed, it needs a recording. Not as a requirement, but for practicality's sake. Nothing is more annoying, especially to small theatres, than when a show has no recording available, nor even a convenient bootleg.
"It's A Wonderful Life: The Musical," originally produced as "A Wonderful Life" is a good example of this- no cast recording, no reference recording, no bootleg. Only a hard-to-find demo recording with severe generational damage where many songs are incomplete or unlistenable due to cracks, pops and skips that derail the songs.

Leap of Faith was recorded last month and according to Alen Menken's twitter it will be released this fall.
So many flops have been recorded, and more often than not these days they are recorded for marketing purposes.
My most wished for flop recording is probably Welcome to the Club.
I'm a Coleman fan and the two songs that were recorded (by bk) are both great.
Other flops with recordings:
