will Broadway ever see "Mame" again?

Just listening to the cast recording again and thinking what a great show it is.

After the 2006 Kennedy Centre revivial transfer feel through, do you think it is likley this show will see a life on Broadway again anytime soon? and who could be a good Mame and Vera?

With shows like Ragtime and Finians getting revivals... surely this can't be too much to wish for?!

I liked the idea that someone had of doing it with Queen Latifah and someone like Tisha Campbell. Some changes might have to be made, though.
"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

Yes, and Donna Murphy should be cast in the title role. Why not get Marin Mazzie as Vera in there? Mazzie is too much of a star given she could play Mame herself but I'd love to see these two together.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

Queen Latifah has been approached about HELLO DOLLY, not MAME. Although, I could see her having great fun with either of the roles.

I saw an interview recently with Dame Edna where someone asked her (probably jokingly) if she'd ever thought about doing a revival of MAME and I thought that actually would be a great idea!

After seeing her in ANYONE CAN WHISTLE, I think Donna Murphy really is the ideal choice for the title role

I would love to see Liza play the role. I love her, but I'm not sure if she could do a "book show" 8 times a week. I think if it did happen, a concert like the Hollywood Bowl would be better sued for her.

I do remember years ago when ABC/Disney did "R&H"s Cinderella", that Jerry Herman was looking at a tv version of the show with Cher as Mame.

Jordan,

Where did you hear about a revival of Hello Dolly? Who's producing it?

I thought they'd at least wait until Jerry Herman died, or Carol Channing.

I definitely agree that Donna Murphy would be a perfect Mame. Who would be her Vera?
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad

As much as I love Murphy, she is far too acidic to play Mame. Fabulous Vera? Oh yes. Mame? Not quite. Yes, Mame has to be able to deliver the barbs in "Bosom Buddies" but at her core, Mame is a fun-loving, kooky, fairly innocent and accepting woman. She has to be legitimately stunned by the Upsons declarations against Jews. She has to win you over. Murphy just has an icy quality that would hurt her as Mame. Baranski had it, Ebersole had it, and so does Patti.

You also need someone with major star power, and sadly, Mame is an expensive show to produce. It needs a large chorus (mainly for the title song), and has more than a handful of leads. And, given Broadways insane need to have kids alternate roles now, you would need to hire two boys to play Patrick. You would need a box-office name that would attract beyond the usual set to the theatre.

My first choice (and I know some will disagree) is Lauren Graham. She looks young enough to be in her 30s at the start of the show, has that innocence even when delivering a barb, and can definitely sing the role. Had she been cast as Sarah and not Adelaide, and had Des McAnuff remembered how to direct, she would have been loved last season.

As talented as they are, a revival of Mame featuring Donna Murphy and Marin Mazzie would last about a month. Mame is, and always was, a star vehicle.

Catherine Zeta-Jones as Mame! She'd be brilliant. Above everything else, Mame has to be an elegant woman. Not saying that the other ladies aren't - just that CZJ would be wonderful.

Victoria Clark would be a divine Mame.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

^ She doesn't have a marquee name...which is what they need.
