C'mon now.....no musical (and I use that term loosely) is worse than "Can't Stop The Music." It's just not possible.
Jesus Christ Superstar
A Chorus Line
The Wiz
I couldn't get through the first seven minutes of Man of La Mancha.
I think A Little Night Music had the potential to be great...with a different director and without Elizabeth Taylor. She wasn't horrible, but there were many other people who were much better suited for the role.
I have to defend Hello Dolly. I actually thought it was a good film. It's better than most.
Talk about a bump! One of my first posts is in this thread.

I actually thought that Man of La Mancha was good (at least the parts I saw) but when I saw the way they butchered The Impossible Dream, I officially realized why this is such a derided adaptation.
The movie version of Oklahoma starring Shirley Jones...I'm sorry but it did not hold my attention and I was utterly unconvinced by Shirley Jones. I thought that the Hugh Jackman version was superior.
Sondheimgeek, I liked the "Hello Dolly" film too.
"Camelot" the movie is just terrible, which is one reason why I'm always so desperate to see good productions of it. They took a great, great musical and butchered it. There oughta to be a law!
"Grease" has good songs, but I think the movie itself is stupid. I don't like the play either.
"Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" isn't one of the worst, but I think it's way overrated, although the choreography deserves all the praise it's gotten.

""At Long Last Love" will be screened this Saturday night - March 8th, 2008, in San Francisco at The Castro Theatre. I'm flying up tomorrow to see it in addition to other Peter B. films that The Castro Theatre is honoring."
And let me be the first to predict that you will run, not walk, back to your computer to breathlessly post what a lost gem and masterpiece this unmitigated piece of merde is. You wait and see if I'm right.

Worst: The Wiz, Chorus Line, Grease 2 and Jesus Christ Superstar all reaked...
Best: Chicago, Evita, West Side Story (it's a classic), Fame (It's just my favorite movie in general).
I like how Chris Columbus brought back Adam, Anthony, Jesse, Wilson, Idina and Taye for Rent, but I think that it lost a lot of the 80's feel and the magic..but I am still absolutely in love with the movie (though no comparison to broadway). I hated Emmy Rossum but other than that, the Phantom of the Opera was well done too.

Meet Me In St. Louis is a movie I put on whenever I need to cheer up. I'm not a Judy Garland fan, but it is one of the best along with Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.
Horrible musicals: Mame
Evita
Sweeney Todd
Little Night Music
Camelot
On A Clear Day You Can See Forever
"To start with The Music Man with Matthew B. & Miss Chenoweth it was... well let's just say it was no Preston and Jones"
It's not supposed to be Preston and Jones, its supposed to be Broderick/Cheno...I thought the love story part of this movie was better than the original, certainly more believeable, but Preston and Jones were good individually. There's no point of watching a remake of anything if you're going to compare it to the original.
I would agree on The Wiz, Grease II, Easter Parade and I really did not like Kiss Me Kate.

Most bad movie musicals at least have some camp value. The really painful ones I've seen (which I would never repeat) are PHANTOM (go AWAY!), CHORUS LINE (great material slowly tortured to death onscreen), and the Rosalind Russell GYPSY (ditto).
I'd like to register an all-time worst vote for SHOCK TREATMENT. It was only made because ROCKY HORROR was a hit, and it was even more incoherent and pointless, without a catchy pop score to redeem it--watching it, I thought my head was going to explode.

Oh, dear, I'd forgotten LOVE'S LABOUR LOST. What a HORRIBLE idea! Talented people looking absolutely adrift in a sea of Jello-like colors--Alicia Silverstone giving an earnest, unfunny graduate-student performance--and the least convincing rendition of "There's No Business Like Show Business" I have EVER seen.
WORST: A Chorus Line, Camelot
BEST: Guys and Dolls, Rent, and Music Man (as corny as it is, it was the first musical I ever saw so of course it will be on my list)...the movie, not the tv version.

Yeah...I pretty much adore movie musicals

The alleged upcoming The Color Purple.
Just kidding, kind of.
Worst that I have ever seen--A Chorus Line, The Wiz (to be honest, I haven't bothered with the likes of From Justin To Kelly, etc...so they might actually worse).
How Meet Me in St. Louis makes anyone's worst list is beyond my comprehension (mostly at the beginning of this thread from four years ago). And AFI agrees putting it in their top 25 greatest movie musicals (I think it was number 10).

CHICAGO.
Always and forever, the worst movie musical and the worst movie ever made. Badly cast, badly directed, an atrocity from beginning to end.
BK, I never said that "At Long Last Love" was a masterpiece. If you go back and reread my post, all I said was that it was being screened this weekend in SF. It's not a perfect musical....far from it. But, I can appreciate it and have a fun experience with it.

It has to be The Vagabond King, with Kathryn Grayson and Oreste Kirkop. Kathryn muddles through this mess of horrible editing alongside Oreste, whose dialogue had to be dubbed, as he couldn't speak English. As much as I love Kathryn, there was just nothing at all she could do to save that sunken ship.
Meet Me In St. Louis isn't a bad movie at all, just boring from time ti time, in my opinion.
I agree with whoever said Brigadoon. Good for aesthetic pleasure, not much else.
Another real winner is Texas Carnival, though it is a guilty pleasure of mine. MGM started stretching for new places to put Esther Williams, and "swimming" through Howard Keel's living room was just flat out awkward. Not to mention the fact that they nearly drowned her, filming it. But we have that gem of a song, "It's Dynamite," sung by Ann Miller, which is so plainly about orgasms you have to wonder who in the world chose it and WHY the production code lackeys didn't pick up on it.
Okay, I've gotta stand up for "Brigadoon." It has flaws, sure, but it also has wonderful moments, especially "Heather on the Hill" and "Almost Like Being in Love," which might have been different from the original staging but was absolutely lovely.
I forgot about Esther Williams. I'd lump most of hers together for the worst list. Who the heck thought that movies about swimming were a wonderful idea?
"Guys and Dolls" on the whole wasn't bad, but Brando's performance is surely up there with the worst musical performances ever (yes, I said it). His attempts to sing make me shudder, and they had to take one of my favorite songs in the world out of the score because Mumbles didn't have the range for it!! I get mad all over again every time I think of it. (Sorry, Kasie.)
