Overall, I thought the production was well executed. The set and costumes were gorgeous. However, the sound mixing was uneven at times, and the use of handheld microphones felt awkward.

In what seems to be a the beginning of an era where producers serve up regurgitated touring productions disguised as “revivals,” it’s a joy to see a truly fresh take on a classic musical return to Broadway.

 

This was going to bomb with or without Chenoweth’s ignorant Kirk remarks.

My two cents:

1. From what I’ve seen and heard (though I haven’t seen him live in the role), Billy doesn’t seem like the right fit for the Emcee and may be the weakest casting in the revival.
2. Sepsis is extremely serious especially for someone who is immunocompromised. I wish Billy a full and speedy recovery. I also don’t think the production or Billy owed us an explanation for his absence, particularly given the severity of this illness.

I’ll be interested to see who reviews the Nashville run.  There aren’t any actual theater critics in the city.

Sneak peak of Mattel’s dolls for Wicked: For Good includes a Dorothy choice.  A very interesting choice and hint that we will see her face in the film. 

Zegler’s “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” is available on lol streaming platforms (both the studio and live versions).

IMO - it’s the definitive recording of the song.

For obvious reasons, I understand why this is premiering in Nashville. However, I lived there for a decade, and it’s not exactly a theatre town. Even the few professional theatres struggle to fill seats — even for typically popular shows like Joseph, Mamma Mia, or Beauty and the Beast. That said, with Dolly’s star power and deep roots in the area, maybe this one will break through. Excited to see it come to NYC!

I saw both Audra and Nicole.  Both are fabulous performers, but felt that Nicole deserved the Tony.

Just from perusing a variety of social media discussions around this topic, I do have to say that many of the “AUDRA SHOULD HAVE WON” folks are… intense.

I find the Platt family (while talented) to be incredibly insufferable.

Is Jamie *that* hard of a role?  It’s not like he’s playing King Lear.

I don’t get the Zegler hate from people (not necessarily on this board - just in general).  I find her to be incredibly talented with one of the most beautiful voices out there right now.

Although whoever designed her God-awful wig she is wearing in “Snow White” should be banned from ever working again…

I, for one, think she’s perfect for the role.  I hope this transfers across the pond.

I wonder if Kat McPhee and/or Megan Hilty (especially since she's already in town) will be involved in the marketing for this over the next few weeks.
