Why are audiences so poorly behaved these days? Jun 23

I'd rather hear an "oops" while they're passing their gas rather than some of the circumstances mentioned here.

Why are audiences so poorly behaved these days? Jun 22
2025, 12:34:18 PM
When I have good theater experiences like some posters indicate, I asked myself if I woke up in a parallel universe that morning. I had stated in a thread on the same subject about six months ago that I had stopped going to the theater because of the situations people mention here, but I did go back and in the period of 3 months saw about 15 shows, including a few where the understudies for the leads were on and thus cancellations meant that there was space between people. Of those dozen plus

Les MIs tour cast to Boycott Trump performance May 7

If he actually shows up for that or another performance out of the blue, chances are he won't even stay awake through act 1 and will probably disappear during intermission.

City Centers 24-25: Ragtime, Urinetown, LaChiusa's Wild Party, Love Life May 5

I agree that Rene Reid scored in this, and did much better than expected under the circumstances. She definitely has comic timing, and you can see why a nice looking woman has awkward moments with men ("95 Ways to Go" landed a big laugh where I was sitting), and feels she has to overcompensate in other areas since she's overshadowed by her flirty sister. But the direction of scenes that should have been funnier (particularly "Conversation Piece") fell flat. I'll never forget how Donna Murphy

I got a message that Anika is not performing the Sunday evening performance and I could get a credit through Today Tix for another performance or towards my account for another show. With the reviews, I thought for a minute of getting the credit, but then said I'm never going to hear this score live in a theater again and just decided to go anyway. I saw Donna on Broadway, and of course the Roz TV production, but I would love to go back in time to the 60's when City Center did two wee

Jennifer Simard on Her Above-the-Title Star Turn in Death Becomes Her Apr 25
2025, 12:43:10 PM
While I didn't see Jennifer in this for the matinee performance I attended, when her character makes the entrance in the red dress, I immediately thought of Peggy Cass in the movie version of "Auntie Mame", mainly because of the hairstyle as the dress Agnes wears is darker. I think because Helen went from awkward to confident, she would still have elements of her shyness in her and overplay the kittenish aspects of what she was now expected to do. Agnes pretty much did the same

Have You Left at Intermission? Apr 21
2025, 08:55:21 AM
I tried to give Rent a second chance after much pleading by my boss at the time, and just couldn't do it, having been truly bored the first time around. Sometimes, a second act seems like an eternity, which was the case with this show for me. The only other Broadway shows I can recall walking out on during intermission was An American in Paris (having seen the matinee of Gigi and enjoyed that much more), finding the view from the top of the Palace a horrible experience and the show ponder

BOOP! THE MUSICAL Reviews Apr 21
2025, 08:42:03 AM
I saw the Thursday matinee with Victoria Byrd, and thought she was absolutely magnetic. Would I go back to see those I missed? Possibly. It's the most fun I've had at a new musical since "The Prom", even more so than "Death Becomes Her", even though I thought both understudies did incredible jobs in that. There's something about the enthusiasm of those going on for the stars that they want to make an impression, so they give 150%. The sets, costumes and choreog

Refunds for “over the title” stars’ absences Apr 9
2025, 11:27:22 AM
It's ironic that you ask this question because I just got an email regarding Death Becomes Her tickets for the matinee today indicating that both leading ladies were out and that I could ask for a credit through my point of purchase which was today tix. I'm still going because I got a good deal and an offer for a better seat that was cheaper (which I compare to being offered first class over coach), and am not an extreme fan of either actress even though I enjoy their work from what I

Broadway Flops you love that everybody else hates Apr 1
2025, 11:53:23 AM
The one big flop I can't get out of my mind for its audaciousness and tacky brilliance is "Dance of the Vampires", especially its declaration at the end of drinking blood and eating souls. I used to have the playbills of this and "Legs Diamond" proudly displayed together as flop shows I remembered practically every detail about.
Some shows are flops simply because they couldn't sustain an audience willing to pay full price, yet had high percentage

I saw Love Life last night and was surprised as to how much I enjoyed it, initially apprehensive over seeing the running time, but the very long first act moved surprisingly fast, while the second act (set in the present day of 1948, the show's year of release) seemed like it was way under an hour. I had tickets for it 5 years ago but of course it was canceled so as a last minute decision decided to see what I had hoped to see then, especially because of the stars. The kids threaten to wa

Banning Food in Theatres Feb 23
2025, 04:56:06 PM
I don't remember what actor commented on being overcome by the smell of someone's chicken dinner being passed around in the front row during a performance, but I was stunned by the fact that someone would have the audacity to do that. I went to an Off Broadway show right before covid, and the woman next to me had a big paper bag filled with fried chicken and greasy food, and I thought I was going to throw up. I had been working all week and was too tired to even deal with it, and if I

re: Have you ever forgotten to turn your cell phone off during a broadway s Feb 3

Only once, when I went to see "Bright Star", and an amber alert came through. I don't think my face has recovered from the redness that took over.
I'm always been very diligent about making sure of it being off, but that one mistake has stuck with me. Back in the day when you could actually take the phone battery out, I removed it at a performance of "War Paint", a good thing because I was in the front row, and there were many moments when the star

THE COTTAGE On Broadway - Previews Thread Aug 29
2023, 10:19:37 PM
I saw this tonight, and before the show started and during intermission, a lot of people were pointing out details of the curtain that I felt were metaphors for the plot. Not going to give any details away, but that was a great way to get people to start to engage with the show before hand and put away their phones!

Encores! 2023: LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA with Ruthie Ann Miles, DEAR WORLD with Donna Murphy, and OLIVER! Jun 24
2023, 09:08:26 AM
Hoping "Light" does transfer. I thought initially, "Too soon?" when I heard they were doing it, but it has been 18 years. People born when it played at Lincoln Center are now adults. Both productions are excellent, but the small twist of this really works, and Anna Zavelson as Clara is a definite find. That big voice coming from a small frame, yet not coming off like a "greedy songbird" (to paraphrase "Amadeus" . Hoping this is the "Into the Woods"/"Parade" of later this Broadway season. I hope Victoria Clark has a chance to see it. Maybe Victoria, Ruth or Anna will sing a song from it honoring Renee Fleming (who played Margaret fairly recently) at the Kennedy Center Honors.

Pre show announcements Mar 8

With completely different voice once a minute, tell the audience that they have a certain amount of minutes before the show starts. 10 minutes then five minutes than 10 minutes then 5 minutes again, then two minutes then 10 minutes again. If you have lots of seniors in the audience, it creates a lot of fun. You might make some people think that they're watching the little old ladies from ""The Producers".

The Music Man’ is the wrong Broadway revival for this crucial moment Jul 1
2021, 08:32:40 AM
I consider "The Music Man" up there with "Guys and Dolls" and "Hello Dolly!" to be practically perfect shows that give me that goofy smile the minute the music starts that often brings me to tears of complete joy. All three shows are fantasias on life that should just be enjoyed for the color, the music, eccentric characters (who somehow change during the course of the show) and in the case of Sky Masterson, Harold Hill and Horace Van Degelder either atone or begin to see life from a different a

Stuart Damon has died… Jun 30
2021, 11:47:29 AM
I really enjoy the cast albums he's heard on, including "Irma La Douce", the Off Broadway "Boys From Syracuse" and "Do I Hear a Waltz" where he isn't allowed to sing the lyric that Sondheim wanted for "We're Going to be All Right" (basically an early version of "You're Gonna Love Tomorrow") that Richard Rodgers found crude. On the 2001 Pasadena cast album, that lyric is restored, and was in the Encores production. As a GH fan, I preferred the sometimes volatile drama and frequent comic

Draw the wrong moral from a musical Mar 19

Company: All of your crazy married friends hate each other and only like you because you're single, and they want you to be as miserable as they are. Tuck Everlasting: The only creatures who will be around when the world ends are the Tuck family and a bullfrog. Follies: Powerful men are secretly miserable and suicidal, and their sophisticated wives who act like European royalty really long to act like chorus girls. Brigadoon: It's best to go to s
