Damn. Sounds like they should have just done a London transfer instead...

Because, as has been mentioned, multiple actors from ALW’s Phantom were involved in the workshop of this new production. That isn’t c

I would be very surprised if Paul Giamatti would take the role of Herbie at this point in his career. He is at a career peak; taking a featured role in a revival just doesnt sound like the right career decision.
"

He’s just been announced to star in a television spin off of a terrible horror movie series, if this is his career peak then he could do a lot worse than Herbie in a big, anticipated Broadway revival of one of the world’s most famous musicals.

Wednesday night’s show already felt tighter, with a more confident Michelle Williams.

Act I ran 1 hour 19 minutes.

Act Ilran 50 minutes, including bows.

Elvis’s role has been lessened. He no longer knocks on the mansion door of Viola Van Horn but still inhabitsthe scene

First off, this is NOT a Broadway musical. It’s a trashy Vegas comic act masquerading as theater. The show has no coherentscript and no music except for one 11 o’clock number sung by the two leading ladiesthat is so ridiculously over the top that you listen in disbelief

Thank you for posting this still! This was one of those "blink and you'll miss it" moments in the teaser.

In the still, Galinda is flanked by two characters from Maguire’s book that do not appear in the stage musical. To Galinda’s left is the character Phannee (played by Bowen Yang) and to her right is ShenShen (played by Bronwyn James). In the book, Phannee and ShenShen are both females. They’re kind of like Glinda’s rich “mean girl” friends, especially in regards to how they view Elphaba.

As seen in the still, it seems the students of Shiz have options regarding whether/not to conform to gender-specific clothing. Above the waist, all are wearing a blazer, but below the waist, some are in trousers, some in knee-length shorts, some in skirts, and some in both skirt and shorts. Their choices for what to wear below the waist do not seem to be restricted to what might be considered traditional gender conformity. In the still, Phannee is wearing a skirt, but it’s not visible whether/not the character is also wearing shorts.

Also in the still, Phannee is obviously showing signs of disapproval. Yang is scowling. His disapproval is accentuated by wearing his glasses lower down on his nose. He's literally looking down his nose at Elphaba at first sighting.

So, here’s what I’m wondering: Why was the character from Maguire’s book changed to imply a stereotype of a gay male?
"

ShenShen and Pfannee are in the stage show. There’s male Shiz students wearing skirts in the stage show also.

I wonder if it was a creative choice or a right issue?
"

They don't have the rights to the 1939 film. Those rights are owned by Warner Bros (who acquired them from MGM at some point). This is, officially speaking, basedonlyon the public domain Baum books.

Sorry, I should have made my point more clear. I’m more surprised they didn’t pay for the usage of the Ruby Slippers. Given that the aesthetics of Wicked borrows heavily from the 1939 movie, which this film seems to do even more.
