On Your Feet, the Broadway musical about the lives of Gloria and Emilio Estefan, will soon be coming to the screen.
Deadline reports that a film adaptation of the musical is in the works from writer/director Lissette Feliciano, who made her feature debut in 2021 with the indie drama Women Is Losers. On Your Feet, made by Sony Pictures, will mark Feliciano's first major studio project as writer and director.
Like the Broadway musical, the Estefan's will be involved in the project, this time as producers.
On Your Feet! is the original musical based on the extraordinary life of 26-time GRAMMY Award-winning husband-and-wife team Gloria and Emilio Estefan. The show features a book by Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Alexander Dinelaris and a score made up of some of the most loved and iconic songs of the past quarter-century including "Rhythm is Gonna Get You," "Conga," "Get On Your Feet," "Don't Want To Lose You Now," "1-2-3" and "Coming Out of the Dark."
Having begun in Chicago in the summer of 2015, On Your Feet! made its Broadway debut that November, played for two years, and received seven Outer Critics Circle Award nominations, three Drama League Award nominations and a Tony Award ® nomination for Best Choreography.
Had a funny coincidence today. I was looking through an old Playbill I had recently bought on eBay and this show was in the How Many Have You Seen? section. Until that moment, I had never heard of this show.
I love Gloria but this was a boring and cringy show. A total disapointment for me. Agree, this doesn't need to happen. BTW, this show was one of a few where the audience felt ENTITLED to scream sing the songs during the show. It was obnoxious!
Also, whatever happened to the Beautiful film that Tom Hanks was supposedly producing?

Variety reported back in July that the project is still in development without Daisy Edgar-Jones. Last year’s writers and actors strikes delayed it further.
Enough with this stupidity. It’s getting so ridiculous that any day now GONE WITH THE WIND will be cancelled due to Vivien Leigh (a British actress) played Southern Belle Scarlet O’Hara.

I think the problems people have with Gone with the Wind have remained pretty consistent over the last 84 years. It was getting picketed in 1940.
If you make a movie where slaves were happy to be slaves, that's always going to be the main complaint.

Exactly. And with “Selena”, JLo was a Puerto Rican playing a Mexican and, guess what? She ate, and we got over it as a society.
With regards to the movie, honestly, I feel it would be a better medium for this story. When I saw it on stage, I didn’t really find it compelling enough for a full length Broadway show - even though Ana Villafañe and the choreography were spectacular. Considering Alexander Dinelaris’ pedigree is film, I think this could be more in his wheelhouse as a screenwriter

I just don’t see Gloria Estefan signing off on this if they don’t cast someone with a Cuban background.

Ana De Armas is the Cuban actress who makes the most sense commercially. Unfortunately, there's the significant problem she can't sing, by her own admission.
I think to get this movie made it would have to be a Rachel Zegler like solution, not literally hiring Zegler but hiring a Cuban actress who was just as unknown as Zegler when she was cast in West Side Story.
Katerina McCrimmon is of Cuban descent and would make a wonderful Gloria.

How about the original Broadway Gloria: Ana Villafañe herself. She’s not only Cuban, grew up in Miami, but also attended the same private all-girl Catholic school Gloria did and vocally can emulate Gloria Estefan’s vocals, which she requested Ana do instead of trying to do her own take on the vocals.
