The 78th Annual Tony Award Nominations for 2025
 May 3 2025, 07:44:29 PM

I can’t see Matthew Morrison doing as well with Just in Time as Groff, who I think in general is just more talented but also has the kind of innate likability to carry this kind of project. Morrison is talented but I don’t think he has that kind of charisma. He’s always felt like a guy had all the pieces of a star in place but lacked the it factor that truly makes one.

Also happy for English scoring both Ashe and Neshat after thinking there would only be room for one. Though as great as that category is, I feel sorry for Amalia Yoo missing out. I had thought she and Fina Strazza were sure things, to the point where I considered Morgan Scott scoring a third nod in the category alongs

I don’t think Culkin’s problem is in emulating a sleazy salesman, it’s that he can’t transcend the archetype, which is what this role calls for. Roma is a total sleaze but we need to buy that he could convince his prey that they’re friends as he sinks his claws into them.

After the audience has heard all this talk about a great salesman with a massive lead over the rest, when we finally see Roma at work, he should be practically hypnotic. C

Happy Birthday to a legend taken far too soon.

To be honest, I forgot about Cripple of Inishmaan when I brought up Pillowman. Now that I’m reminded of Radcliffe’s prior McDonagh work, I’ll double down on wanting more.

edit: and without having seen a thing of his performance, I feel confident assuming Letts was indeed perfect in that role

Not sure why, but the first that came to mind was The Pillowman. Maybe it’s cause he plays exhausted incredibly well, but I think he’s got the charisma and intensity to be quite great as Katurian. I also think he’s willing enough to play second fiddle that a great performance as Michal could be on the cards, and I could even see him make for a fine Tupolski when he’s older.

Washington was categorized as a lead, so Jackson didn’t get a nomination over him. He did however get the nod over Michael Potts and Ray Fisher who it felt like were acknowledged by many — including the precursors — as giving better performances.

But it’s really not an apt comparison. Potts and Fisher are smaller names than Odenkirk and Burr, and Jackson had better reviews than Culkin. Jackson was generally agreed to be giving a good performance in a

Jack Shepherd won an Olivier as a lead actor for playing Roma, but the part is largely categorized as a supporting role. If Culkin did go lead, I can’t see him winning, though not because of the Othello men, I have Cole Escola winning. Gyllenhaal could maybe be a threat, but I think he’d need a stronger production to win, and I think Denzel’s going to be snubbed again.

I would think Culkin would compete in Featured Actor, but if all the buzz for Burr continues and it

I don’t think Culkin’s winning. Even if he has the plum part, I see more and more people saying Burr’s the standout.

Though right now I have Conrad Ricamora winning, but that’s a different show and different subject.

Any standout performances? How’s Gabriel Ebert? I’ve always been a fan and would love to see him back in the Tony race again.

Ken Page has passed away at 70

Just more horrible news. Ken was an electric talent. May he live on forever scaring new kids every Halloween and Christmas. And hopefully more and more of them grow up to discover the rest of his work like I did.

Gavin Creel was an artist who had just transitioned from reliable player to genuine star, and I was so ready to hear his work as a composer and performer blossom. I was lucky enough to see him in four of his roles over the years (Hair, She Loves Me, Book of Mormon and Into the Woods) and each time he just shone on stage. His work in Into the Woods was an unforgettable act of scene-stealing, the kind of once-in-a-lifetime role reinventi

I’m just heartbroken. Gavin was an incredible person and of the best actors on Broadway. I can just hardly believe we lost him in his prime, and I’m crying thinking of all the years of his life he, his loved ones, and this community won’t see. He was exceptional and beloved, and I just hope he knew it at the end.

I think since the categories are not gender specific, they choose two winners from the nominees. In the case of three winners, I would assume there's a tie. Interesting to note that Brian is the only male-identifying actor to win a performance award.

I get that these shows run long, but Stereophonic not being allowed to perform is ridiculous. It’s the most Tony nominated play of all time, and in terms of acclaim, it leaves every nominated musical this year but Merrily We Roll Along in the dust. The Tonys being unwilling to spotlight a number from a show that’s considered a genuine contender to win Best Original Score is just dumb.
