re: Pirate Queen tonight: More drama offstage than on
 Apr 5 2007, 03:54:25 AM
I don't post much or anything -- and have noticed the Pirate Queen fan base, to say the least -- but I am absolutely disgusted by Wanna Be A Foster's comment.

First, stereotyping Pirate Queen/Stephanie J. Block fans who also hold the opinion that she (who workshopped the role of Elphaba with Stephen Schwartz) should have originated the role of Elphaba on Broadway as "shills" is extremely disrespectful. And what you assume about the so-called shills you stereotype is unproven and most l

Not sure if the person above me is joking or not, but Alan Menken definitely wrote the music of HOND. Stephen Schwartz only did the lyrics.

I gotta personally agree with Lance2 though, the Act I finale "Esmeralda" is absolutely incredible... the major music theme is very strong and has some reprises through that are meshed together into a very stirring, tense, and yet majestic piece of music.

re: The Pirate Queen in NYC, compared to Chicago! **SPOILERS!!**

SayitSomehow,

In my opinion, it's hard to compare the Schönberg scores. That also said, it's hard to judge a score solely based on hearing it once or twice when you've heard the score of Les Miz and Miss Saigon hundreds (I'm assuming, give or take an order of magnitude) of times. Perhaps people should keep in mind that one of the London reviews of Les Miz when it opened stated that neither the tunes nor the score were memorable, save for what he referred to as the love songs between M

First off, there's no doubting that her last name was O'Malley. That said, I don't remember a point in the musical when someone referred to her as O'Malley. In fact, except for saying "Clan O'Malley" I don't even recall people addressing Dubdhara as O'Malley. They usually refer to her as Grania or in some cases, Grace, which I assume is "correct" by your Professor's standards. So, according to your Professor, they shouldn't refer to her as O'Malley. Well, they don't--at least to my recollec

Definitely, thanks to whoever is responsible. And thanks Popular for posting.

Regarding Martin Guerre, I don't think it's farfetched to make comments regarding it. Some "dialogue" melodies actually sound really similar to Martin Guerre (the climbing thirds that end on a different chord). And I guess, the emphasis on dancing also enforces that. But still, if you were to watch the entire show, I think you would see that it is quite different from Martin Guerre (both the original and t

My two cents on this topic:

As a person who saw the Pirate Queen in Chicago, I won't say that it didn't have it's problems. But like many mentioned, you could see the seemingly latent potential in the show. Personally, I loved the music, and I have always loved Schönberg's scores. And just to argue a bit with lyric bashers, while I agree that the book was a bit weak and the musical not dramatized as well as it could have been, you can't take away from SOME of the beautiful lyrics in

re: Question about Les Miserables Cast Recordings...

Just to give you another perspective on Les Mis cast recordings, composer Claude-Michel Schönberg has said that (in his opinion) the best recording of Les Miserables is without a doubt, the Tenth Anniversary Concert recording.

I personally value Lea's Eponine above Frances and Kaho... I know it's all about taste. I feel this is one of the major differences between recordings. And while Anthony Warlow is great as Enjolras on the CSR, I think Michael Maguire is pretty awesome as well.

Just a few nit-picky things:

Herbert Kretzmer claims that about 1/3 of the original french text was a translation... he did do quite a bit by himself. For example, the original French Les Mis started with "At the End of the Day" so ... a lot was "conceived" by Kretzmer.

Kretzmer was approached by Boublil to do the lyrics, however, he did not turn it down because of Phantom of the Opera... which is quite clear since Hart wrote them. Kretzmer was offered to be the lyricist

Hey guys, I'm enjoying the things I hear about the Pirate Queen positives/negatives also.

But I just had to comment on writing new material. I believe, from the things I've read about the creation of B&S musicals, that when their material needs work, they change it, as long as it furthers the story. I think changing "Too Much for One Heart" which would have definitely been a much more popular song if it had not been changed to the duet, "Please" really portrayed that... and that was

re: Pirate Queen Castcom Discussion Thread (Exclusive sneak peak!)

Hey guys--this is my first post here!

I was wondering if anyone else had caught the castcom that they put up earlier today... I noticed it wasn't in this thread (and that it was also no longer available to view). It was of Marcus Chait and Linda Balgord talking about one of the "lows" of the day. Just in case you didn't see it, they said that after one of the fight scenes they were practicing, Stephanie J. Block accidentally fell down a trap door, about 10 feet, hit some props that cu
