Universal's WICKED Film - News & Discussion Thread

For those complaining about the Wizard reveal, Joel Grey’s singing voice was even more recognizable when it was performed in the original cast.

SWEPT AWAY Previews

My problem with the show in DC was that the mid-show tonal shift is pretty much the only thing to happen.  Everything else seemed so static.  The characters were so broadly drawn as to not have much in the way of a meaningful arc and the plot itself is not enough to carry an hour and a half.  The music is wonderfully performed but also tends to blur together without much to hang it on.

City Centers 24-25: Ragtime, Urinetown, LaChiusa's Wild Party, Love Life

Saw this Saturday and was crying for about 75% of the running time.  Just as she did with Into the Woods, Lear has directed a production where the words and music are the star and you hear every detail.  Every character is more vividly drawn than any other production I've seen.  A true masterpiece that I think should be required viewing for every American.  And for that reason it should transfer - who cares if it makes money.

Not only dark - it was a bit of a slog in DC.  Very little humor or personality to draw you in and even the drama itself doesn't really have anywhere to go.

Musical adaptation of film SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED from Nick Blaemire and Ryan Miller (Guster) to premiere at BAM

Saw this on Sunday with my wife and 2 kids and we all enjoyed it a lot.  The story was engaging and thought, performances and music were great.  While the staging was bare, it fit the piece well.  I'd kill for a cast recording.

Is the choreography performed live?  From my seat I thought it was a projection!

Saw this late last week and as someone who is not a huge fan of the show in its original version, this was one of the most joyful and optimistic pieces of theater I've ever seen and I hope more people get a chance to see it.

SUFFS Original Broadway Cast Recording Thread

Love it and don't agree that it doesn't sound like the live show.  I think it captures the momentum very well.  And these orchestrations by Michael Starobin are truly lovely.  This would absolutely have my vote for Best Score.

I assume no one that's been complaining about Tommy being loud has seen this! I immediately regretted not picking up earplugs on the way in.  But in this case the volume also made a good chunk of the lyrics unintelligible.  Overall, though, I enjoyed the performance.  Yes - it's a slight plot, but it's enough to add emotional heft to some excellent songs with fantastic vocal performances.

What is the worst production you have ever seen on Broadway? What is the worst show?
 May 18 2024, 06:56:16 AM

Absolutely has to be Memphis. Utterly baffling.

A few dishonorable mentions: Pirate Queen, Pretty Woman, The Last Ship, Frank Wildhorn’s Dracula. And, yes, Great Gatsby.

I had no issue with the sound quality and LOVE the into the woods cast recording - you can hear so much texture in both the orchestrations and the vocal performances.

Every year I wait for this announcement hoping to see LaChiusa's Wild Party and was worried that their summer staging of the Lippa version ruined that chance.  I literally just jumped out of my chair.  I can't wait to see how they cast this!

Happy to see The Outsiders nominations - especially direction and choreography.

The people behind this show have taken a public domain novel everyone reads (but most don't really remember) and have fixated on the two things the story conjures in most people's minds: the time period and the opulence. I didn't find it fun.  The changes to the plot and intent of the novel made the story a bit meaningless and most of the songs didn't really drive any action as much as repeat a sentiment for 4 minutes.  Fireworks (literally) and sequins weren't enough to keep me ent

They ADDED that!? I was shocked that it hadn’t been cut in previews - I’m even more shocked that it was a deliberate addition!
