The Death of the Understudy Slip

This is a hill some people are willing to die on, they want paper copies of anything related to their theater experience, just as it was fifty years ago.  Short of projecting the names on the scrim right before the performance, I don't t

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 12/28/25

Jarethan said: "The only thing that genuinely surprises me on the report is Chess. I will admit that the current production od Chess is probably my favorite production running. Asmuch as I loved Hamilton or Wicked or Chicago in their heyday, I was never as thrilled watching them as I was duringChess. Also, it was about as electric performances as I ever attended, although I will admit to seeing it in previews, so the audience was probably filled with Chess junkies.

I was genuinely surprised and disappointed that it did only 95% of capacity and had a lower average ticket price than BOM or Hadestown, to cite two long running shows that have not been doing great business for a long time. Hell, it only grossed $50K more than Gatsby, which has been on some level of life support for quite a while. Re Aaron Tveit missing a performance, it is my understanding that he called in very late, so I doubt that that had any impact on the box office. I can't help wonder whether we are starting to see what happened to SB last season (SB also underwhelmed a littleduring Xmas week, as I recall).

As silly as it sounds, I was also surprised that The Lion King did not sell out.

A few other throughts:

  • Is this a temporary uptick for Stranger Things or will Season 5 actually result in its finally taking off on Broadway, if not at capacity, then at least performing noticeably better that much of its run to date (or will it be gone in 6 weeks?
  • Is itpossible that Chicago's bad weeks are largely offset by a few spectacular weeks (at Christmas and Easter? I can't remember the last time that stunt casting helped a lot...seems like it was in 2024, not 2025. (Are the producers getting the horrible Ambassador Theatre for even less than we probably assume?).
  • Why aren't the producers of Mamma Miamaking it an open-ended run. I am sure they can convince the Shuberts to move Salesman to another theatre. God knows they will never fill that theatre unless they charge 1990s prices, since neither Metcalf nor Lane in a drama (and without Matther Broaderick at his side) are box office attractions.
  • Will Two Strangers be gone in six weeks or is it just not benefitting from Christmas week because tourists are unfamiliar with it?
  • I wonder how much the Beetlejuice investors have cumulatively lost as a result of this ill-conceived revisit?

"

According to this Variety article, sales are strong so far for 2026 for Stranger Things. https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/stranger-things-the-first-shadow-broadway-ticket-boost-1236613193/

Of all the weird bootlicking things posted on here... this is one of the weirder ones.

There's certainly a tension between this policy (which, to be honest, I think is defensible) and any effort to expand the use of Yondr pouches or the like. You can't do both.
"

I mean, its pretty simple. You use the pouches then you need to use the slips. Or use the Board and pre-show announcement.

Official: TITANIQUE to dock at the St. James, March 2026 (16 Weeks Only)

If the two hander Two Strangers with a minimal set costs 480-600K a week to run, certainly Titanique would cost more than $250k to run given its cast size I would think.

Has Celine ever talked about this show publicly?  I know she has been dealing with her health problems, so this may be the least of her worries.  I can't imagine she would want this show licensed to regional groups or high schools at this point, as her career is not over yet, and I imagine she might have another tour in her eventually.  I think she has a sense of humor about herself, so in general she would think the show is funny, as I did seeing it in the supermarket

Can I ask the box office to change my seat

If the show isn't sold out, and you are nice, you would have a chance.  I would go when the box office isn't busy though, not right before the show.

A Casino in Times Square? No!

From what I have been reading, the Metropolitan Park proposal next to Citi Field is the favorite.  The other two licenses will probably go to the existing casinos.

Jujamcyn Switch to ATG Tickets
 Jul 10 2025, 05:56:19 PM

In order to disable Apple Pay, I believe you have to disable all types of contactless payment options.  If data is important to ATG, they would rather forgo contactless payments, and lose a sale or two.

https://central.toasttab.com/s/article/Turn-Off-EMV-Payments

I myself would rather get the sale instead to support my tenants, but I don't own a theater chain.

In a response to another question I saw in the thread, the reason you would want to use Apple Pay is it is more secure than a normal credit card because a random token is generated every time you use it so it can't be reused like a normal credit card number.

Odd that the most tech-forward theatre owner would get rid of that, but I've never unders

Wynn already dropped their plans for Hudson Yards due to community opposition (they would be in court for years).  I imagine any other Manhattan location would face the same fate.  The favorites right now are the two existing casinos in Yonkers and Jamaica, and a new one next to Citi Field.

Scherzinger getting a residency in Las Vegas?

Josh Groban just had a five night residency at Caesar's Palace, it doesn't have to be a long series of shows.  I don't know what her team is trying to negotiate though.

SMASH To Close June 22, 2025

Mr. Wormwood said: "Smash had a pretty quick fall. Just a couple weeks ago, it was looking to still be in much better shape than a show like Boop or RWHC and might make it through the summer. But the wheels fell off quickly which is almost worse than chugging along at a low number. It showed audience rejection more than just audience disinterest or lack of awareness.

Why they didn't just do Bombshell, I'll never understand.

STEPHEN SONDHEIM'S OLD FRIENDS Previews
 Apr 5 2025, 11:35:15 PM

I saw the show tonight.  I would recommend it just to see Bernadette.  Her voice is better than I thought it would be. There is no explanation of anything, which is fine for Sondheim fans, but the uninitiated may not understand the songs without any context.  And I having seen most of the shows represented, I sat longing for the original singers of the songs, or, why didn't Bernadette sing that song?, she was in that show (I know she can't sing every song).  I

The only other thing I just thought of is Rockefeller Center, which is an avenue or two away from the Broadway Theater, though the interesting things like the Observation Deck you have to pay for.

I would not underestimate how long it will take a big group to get lunch.  There are not really museums in walking distance of Times Square that I can think of off the top of my head, and museums in NYC typically charge admission.  You could walk to the New York Public Library, I see they have an exhibition.  Or you could go to Bryant Park.

Just read you are seeing The Great Gatsby.  To go to 42nd and 6th might be a stretch.
