I saw tonight’s preview and I mostly found it laughably bad. The cast is trying their best! They are belting! But the score is derivative and misguided, with terrible lyrics. The book is an absolute drag. The ending is absurdly anticlimactic. And the tech? Eh. The flying is mostly very silly. I did like the lighting. A very expensive mess.

I saw this last night and for the most part really enjoyed it. It scratches the itch of the old fashioned musical comedy we don’t see so much anymore while also poking fun at it. They debated cancelling but decided the show must go on and thus they rehearsed all day so Paul Soileau could go on as Frank. All things considered, he was pretty good in the part. I’ve been thinking about this for a bit. I really wanted to like it. I always try to champion new, original musicals. But… this just isn’t it. I found it all so deeply annoying and twee. The characters are shrill and unlikable. The jokes are pedestrian. The score, other than the first song “New York,” feels like a bad copy of every other mediocre modern pop rock musical theater score. It reminded me of a bad Sundance film. I am sad to say that I found this production quite unmoving. The material is incredible. Ragtime has been of my absolute favorite musicals since I first saw it in 1998. My thoughts on this almost exactly mirror those of AKarp. I found this embarrassingly bad, almost entirely because of the direction, which lacks both a consistent conceit and dramaturgical intent. It often felt like a middle aged man desperately trying to appeal to Gen Z and then at other times it is a boring, poorly staged adaptation of the original play. Do you all realize how rude and jaded you sound? The cast is made up of talented theater performers and not stunt casting big names and you seem to be more interested in how many tickets it may sell as opposed to if it’s going to be good or not. Just another day around these toxic wastelands.

Allow me to agree with all of the positive notes. This is a witty, hugely energetic, exceedingly clever romp. I had so much fun over the 85 minutes and cannot wait to see it again. As mentioned, the enthusiasm in the crowd was infectious - and this format lends itself to it. I smell a big hit.

No, they are not even remotely comparable. Besides the fact that Six is a far superior show, it has proven to be a hit in multiple marketplaces already (BMC was never really a hit anywhere, except for its limited Off Broadway run) and it deals with historical characters that aren't teenagers that will have a far wider appeal. Allow me to also add to the chorus of those who found this show quite awful. While the orchestrations are nice and some of the musical numbers are okay, the overall impact is interminable and very dull. There's no real narrative drive, thinly drawn characters, and book scenes that go on and on with the most rote and uninteresting ideas. I was quite taken with Austin Scott's performance and vocals, but that wasn't enough.

It's always a shame when a show closes because people are out of a job. Even bad shows have a lot of hard work behind them. That's nothing to celebrate. But. If people were genuinely offended by this show, or genuinely found it transphobic (as I know some people did), it is nobody else's job to tell others what they can or cannot be upset or offended by. I was at the final performance last night and it was truly a magical evening of theater. The sense of community (on stage and off) was palpable and beautiful. The performances across the board, from the leads - Jelani was perfect and incredibly moving - to the community ensemble members, were fantastic. The puppetry was delightful.
