No, Cathy Ang and Kenny Tran were the leads in Atlanta.

I suspect darker shows aren't going anywhere. We saw a shift in top awarded/popular shows when Trump was elected in 2016 from lighter fare (Book of Mormon, Kinky Boots, Once) to sadder shows (Dear Evan Hansen, Hadestown, the Band's Visit). Hamilton managed to straddle this gap (though I personally think it feels very Obama-era). I think many theatre goers want something that feels real - chipper popcorn fare may not connect with many regular theatre goers

MAYBE HAPPY ENDING. BREAK A LEG Oct 28 2024, 09:58:38 PM
I love Michael Arden but didn't Parade also have a set that created a lot of sight line problems. Seems like he may prioritize form over function.

Marla Mindelle's BIG GAY JAMBOREE at the Orpheum Off-Bway, produced by Margot Robbie. Fall 2024. Sep 23 2024, 01:27:31 PM
Saw this over the weekend - Talented cast and some catchy tunes, but I couldn't get into it. Pacing was breakneck and it's not nearly funny enough to make up for how dumb it is, at least for me.

Musical adaptation of film SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED from Nick Blaemire and Ryan Miller (Guster) to premiere at BAM Sep 23 2024, 01:17:18 PM
I went with a group of non-theatre goers and all liked this overall (although the cynics among the group complained about the ending). Going against the grain of this thread, I actually thought this was a pretty good show. I loved the indie-rock score (although I agree that the sound balance could be improved). The pacing could be tightened and the transitions into and out of songs improved, but for a new work, I thought this was pretty charming. Certainly could amp up the set for subs

Darren Criss and Helen J Shen Will Lead MAYBE HAPPY ENDING on Broadway Aug 21 2024, 01:10:28 PM
I don't understand the confusion that a one act musical is similarly expensive to a 2 act. The cast/crew/musicians still have to be paid in full - the productions' expenses aren't proportionate to the runtime. There are 4 cast members, 2 leads and 2 supporting, high tech sets, an original score, and a charming plot. Not every story is better told with an intermission - Come From Away, Once On This Island, and Six have all been successful without one. I'm a bit saddened by th

Next To Normal WEST END - News & Discussion Thread Jul 27 2024, 11:49:57 AM
I did find Jamie Parker's accent choice distracting, although his acting was great. Ofrecio similar could've used some more time with a dialect coach. I think some shaky American accents are understandable in London, but they'd need to fix them up for New York. On the other hand, Wolfe and Worthington Cox were flawless to my American ears.

Darren Criss and Helen J Shen Will Lead MAYBE HAPPY ENDING on Broadway Jul 18 2024, 04:05:56 PM
The set was very high tech in Atlanta, not just a projection design. The Atlanta run had frequent technical difficulties so I’m not surprised they want to level it up for Broadway. The atlanta run was also more than 4 years ago so I imagine they need to replace/rebuild a number of set items

Frank Wildhorn’s manga musicals Jul 9 2024, 08:04:56 PM
"Your Lie in April" received a concert production in the spring. The new west end run is indeed a full production. I also echo the above sentiments that it was rather dreadful. I hated it - forgettable music, absurd book. That said, I was impressed with Mia Kobayashi in her professional debut. She is clearly going places, hopefully among them better musicals.

The Avett Brothers’ SWEPT AWAY musical at Arena Stage Feb 22 2024, 05:15:51 PM
New Article in Variety: "Shipwrecks, Cannibalism and the Avett Brothers: Why ‘Swept Away’s’ Next Stop Could Be Broadway"
Notable quote: "The producers of “Swept Away” are trying to keep things lean, aiming for a capitalization of $12 million, much lower than the nearly $20 million that many musicals cost to put on these days."

Islander at Playhouse 46 @ St. Luke's Apr 14 2022, 10:38:44 PM
I don't think any particular side has a better view but I'd say within each side being closer to the middle is preferable. The actors often stand at the corners of the stage so if you are on the aisle you'd be seeing their backs more than most. Also, it's an intimate production so the closer to the stage the better.

I just caught it! Thought is was thoroughly delightful. Loved the music, thought the two performers were outstanding, and the story was sweet.
