As we collect out thoughts of what happened in the past 24 hours, I want to know what will happen to the entertainment industry if our government goes from democracy to fascism?
(Let’s be respectful please in our responses. I just want to know what might happen)

With everything Trump announced he would do, I don't think entertainment was touched upon. I think it's safe (for now, who really knows)

Nothing will happen to the entertainment industry. Entertainers historically adjust well to any ruling regime.

Best case scenario: public funding for the arts will continue to be a pittance.

Yeah, the U.S. is already pretty pathetic when it comes to funding the arts. I imagine said funding will continue to stay at its current low level. Of course, who knows what the years may bring.

Obviously they’ll require all actors to carry a gun.

Posted: 11/6/24 at 11:13amThe arts will suffer indirectly. Trump's proposed policies would make everything more expensive, including labor. Inflation will likely accelerate and prices of basic goods will go up. This will cause people to spend less on "luxuries" like the arts. Already struggling arts organizations will struggle more, and some may close, as they did after 2008.

One potential worst-case scenario if Democrats do not retake the House and Trump is able to get Republican support for Elon Musk to trim government spending would be elimination of all funding for the arts, public radio, the humanities, et al.
I would imagine the tone and focus of some art may shift as some artists look to avoid unnecessary scrutiny and others take an activist stance to call out the new regime.

You do realize that what happened in the past 24 hours is democracy?
Is there some alternative you prefer? Like choosing democracy only when the outcome is pleasing? That seems kind of peculiar to me.
I also think a certain sense of reality is very beneficial for the entertainment industry.

Rich entertainers and producers, yes. Most actors and technicians are living paycheck to paycheck without the help of their families. In a world where labor protections are weakened, those with the means to afford the rent will continue to do art, and those without will find work elsewhere.

Statistically many of those actors and technicians probably voted for the change we got last night. Trump got 94k more votes in NYC last night than he did in 2020.

In terms of Broadway, it will impact the types of entertainment audiences want (and perhaps don't want) to sit rhough. Friends today have discussed how musicals like SUFFS, RAGTIME and TAMMY FAYE may now feel very different to many audience members. You can say something like RAGTIME is now more relevent than ever, but for some it is also going to be more depressing than ever.

Politics is the entertainment industry.
Trump is a show-pony.
Kamala is a work-horse. This was her failing.
Sad.

Do you think that person or our government is capable of turning America into a fascist country in under 4 years? I am just curious to see if this will be affecting the arts culture because we need some sort of happiness of what’s about to come in January 2025.

There will be a profound effect as producers and investors appeal to the tastes of the majority.
It is not just tourist shows, but all shows that will need the support of Trump voters.

I think I would phrase this a little differently. Certainly not "all shows" are going to need to support of Trump voters. But the entertainment industry many need to acknowledge that not all audiences for Broadway are the liberal democrats who make up the majority of people in the entertainment industry.

I follow this YouTuber a lot and I highly recommend her content. In about half an hour, she will talk about the future of Hollywood when the next president takes oath in January 2025.

Remember when Trump was the 45th President and Shakespeare in the Park performed Julius Caesar with Caesar as Trump, stabbing him to death at the end?
Remind me - who was arrested over that? Who went to jail? Who lost their jobs? What organizations lost their funding? Who was de-platformed? Who was censored?
Bonus question: What administration mandated the population take an experimental drug or lose their jobs?
Asking for a friend.

Shakespeare In The Park lost two major sponsors because of that production
But I don't expect an anti-vaxxer to know much about history, recent or otherwise.
(Julius Caesar is killed near the beginning of Julius Caesar , not the end)

Oh. That makes censorship, deplatforming, death threats, de-humanizing, thought control, health endangerment and loss of control over one's body and job loss alright then.

He had Dana White on stage last night who thanked the frigging Nelk Boys. How is the entertainment industry not already involved?
