I've seen it 4 times! The show has gotten rave reviews in Atlanta and has strong word-of-mouth, including more discerning theatre-goers. Michael Arden isn't the only big talent they have on it; scenic/lighting/sound designs are also spectacular and by broadway vets! The songs are charming but not really the kind to stick with you after one viewing. However, show as a whole is delightful and unlike much of what we see on Broadway nowadays (by the numbers jukeboxes or film-to-musical adaptations). I don't know what's next for it but surely at the least another major regional theatre will pick it up for a trial run. Happy to answer any specifics questions you might have about the show

My friends and I were in Atlanta over MLK weekend and had tickets for the show but sadly they postponed the first preview to after MLK weekend so didn’t get a chance to see it. Hopefully it will come to Broadway but hopefully not in the same season as KPOP.
Michael Arden has been busy!!! I believe he is also directing Joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat performance on Monday.

I'm sorry you did get to see the show, but judging off of what ended up being the actual first preview, they really had to postpone. They had some major technical difficulties to work out with the stage before they could finish blocking. Since non-movie-to-musical new shows rarely transfer to broadway after just one try-out anymore, I'd be surprised (but excited!) if "Maybe Happy Ending" doesn't stop somewhere else first. This show is very different than KPOP so I don't think it'd be a problem if the two overlapped on Broadway. And yeah, Arden had to leave ATL after MHE opened to direct Joseph!

Only reason why I preferred both Maybe Happy Ending and KPOP not to overlap is because Cathy Ang (one of the leads in Maybe Happy Ending) was also in KPOP during its offbway run back in 2017. Would love to see her perform both shows on Bway some day (not at the same time of course.)

Why would Oliver (the lead male role) be whitewashed? Isn’t this musical supposed to take place in South Korea?

Absolutely this would be the role for Darren Criss.
I saw the show in Atlanta and thought it was lovely. The music isn't very memorable but the story is unbelievably touching. Never thought it would transfer to Broadway but I'd love to see it
