Just listening through the Rodgers and Hammerstein catalog and enjoying songs from Me & Juliet, Allegro, Pipe Dream, Flower Drum Song, Cinderella, 1962 State Fair, and others.
What are your favorite Rodgers & Hammerstein gems that ARE NOT from their big 5 musicals (Oklahoma, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I , or Sound of Music) and are not as well known?

I love "The Next Time It Happens" from Pipe Dream,
"The Gentleman Is a Dope" from Allegro, and
"It Might As Well Be Spring" from State Fair,
although the latter is a pretty well-known jazz standard (better-known than the film perhaps).

It Might As Well Be Spring!

"Everybody's Got A Home But Me," "The Next Time It Happens" and most of Pipe Dream
"It Might As Well Be Spring" sounds better and better all the time, but it's an Oscar winner that's been covered by many, many people so it's hard to consider it obscure.

I have a definite fondness for The Other Generation and its reprise in Flower Drum Song.
I suppose You Are Beautiful from Flower Drum Song isn't as well known
No Way To Stop It - The Sound Of Music
Have you guys ever heard of this song "Climb Ev'ry Mountain"?

"How Can Love Survive?" - a generally lesser known song from THE SOUND OF MUSIC, and ""You Are Beautiful" from FLOWER DRUM SONG.

"So Far" from Allegro just melts me every time I hear it.
"So Far" from Allegro and "It Might As Well Be Spring" from State Fair are my favorites of the lesser known songs.

thanks the other one!!! I had not heard the 2012 encores of Pipe Dream and its a fantastic production and really gives these great songs a vibrant new life.
For any RH fans, this is a wonderful cast live recording!!!!
Here's another lovely version of R&H's "Boys and Girls Like You and Me," sung by Judy's little girl, who tells a bit of the song's history.
"Like a God" from Flower Drum Song
"Stepsisters' Lament" from Cinderella
"When the Children are Asleep" from Carousel
"The Loneliness of Evening" cut from South Pacific and later added to Cinderella

One thing I always loved about the revue A GRAND NIGHT FOR SINGING was that it included some of the best unknown songs from the R&H repertoire.
Someone already mentioned So Far from ALLEGRO...I also love I Know It Can Happen Again from ALLEGRO.
I also really love All At Once You Love Her from PIPE DREAM and The Man I Used to Be which was used in PIPE DREAM and in the 1996 production of STATE FAIR.
I've always liked the bouncy syncopation of 'Sweet Thursday' from PIPE DREAM, but I am not fond of the OCR recording with Helen Traubel. I much prefer Susan Johnson's version (but then I love just about anything sung by Susan Johnson)

Could we start one of these threads for Rodgers and Hart?
"So Far" and "The Gentleman is a Dope" I love "It Might as Well be Spring," of course, but think of it as fairly well known.
Oh, and, "Love Look Away"
You're Never Away from Allegro! I also like Loneliness Of Evening.
