Not *bad* at all...
It depends on your taste in shows, really.
It's not 'how bad' the show is, it's 'how bad'
our economy is right now.
This one REALLY knocked me for a loop:
(per PLABYILL's article)
"Producers announced the new close date at 4:30 PM Friday. Telecharge.com had already indicated that tickets were on sale only through Nov. 9. A cast member also confirmed to Playbill.com on Friday afternoon that company members were told the bad news by telephone."
Best,
- Mike

The show isn't bad-bad, but it sure is unecessary. The story is so good it did not need any songs to tart it up.
I second that there must have been zero advance for next week. But when was the notice put up? If it went up Tuesday everyone gets paid through Sunday. If it went up today they get paid through next Thursday (8 perfs, one workweek).
With operating losses there is a loss figure of 16 mil floating around town.

Posted: 11/7/08 at 4:55pmThe cast new about it before today. I heard it was the intention as soon as they announced the closing that it would be cut short.

Posted: 11/7/08 at 4:56pmI find the article a little hard to believe. As I stated in the other thread about Tale closing, I mentioned that I sent a fan message to Brandi Burkhardt about the rumor that the show was going to close early and she told me that the rumor was true. So I don't believe that the cast was told the bad news today considering the fact that this was either yesterday or the day before.

Why throw cash from the balcony when there's no one in the orchestra to catch it!
This will sting for a long time to come.

blaxx, that was a generalization.
I was referencing ALL of these closings taking shape. It's horrendous, but it's a sad, sad truth (in many instances).

Even at CC it was hinted at that they might close early. The cast and crew knew it was a possibility...and maybe even probablitly...but it wasn't OFFICIAL until today.
In a better economy, this might have done better-- at least floundered a bit longer...doesn't mean it would have been successful though.
If it were JUST the economy, Billy Elliot would have suffered the same fate...and it is flourishing. Grossed almost 1 million last week. The economy will only magnify weaknesses.

True, but it's not like everyone is just dying to see this, but have no money to afford it. The fact is that it didn't have an audience and was critically trashed - even if the economy wasn't bad, it was a floperoo from the get go.

So I don't believe that the cast was told the bad news today.
I'd venture to guess that the cast was told that the show would most likely close on the 9th, but would play through the 16th if the advance was strong enough, which is why the producers announced the 16th in the hopes of boosting sales. When that didn't pan out they pulled the plug and gave the cast confirmation on the closing date.

To Yankee
If you think it is so much dreck, why don't you take pen & paper & write a show or a score? I think you will find it is not as easy as you think. Just because you do not like ATOTC (which you have told us every other minute) does not mean it is dreck. It is your opinion & nothing more.

But he's entitled to his opinion. I'm not a chef...but I know when the food I'm served is garbage...to me.
So just because someone WRITES a musical, we should treat it with kid gloves?????

Posted: 11/7/08 at 6:04pmWhen I saw this show I thought it was average to poor. It had a great cast but the material was weak. HOWEVER I think it was a passable evening the theatre. I was glad I saw it. What's more important is that people encourage this kind of passion and dedication to the theatre. The two lead producers of this show put their heart & soul into this for the past 10 years. Not to mention their time and lots of money. To treat their dreams with such disdain and nastiness is not right. I understand why it did not do well but can we be encouraging please of new people taking new risks in this industry

There is also no need to trash it incessantly. You say you do not like it, fine. We get the point. This is putting in the knife, twisting it, jumping up & down on it etc etc.
I am quite sure our tastes in musicals are different . Some we may both like but to beat a dead horse over & over just goes into pure meaness. The person worked on this for years , the cast gave its all & many enjoyed it. To treat it like a used diaper is a bit much.

I've written plenty (and found it rather easy) - I just don't have Barbra Russell and Ron Sharpe to produce it.
If you can find me someone to cover the capitalization cost, you're on, Roxy.

I still like it & sorry you did not.
If I had the money, I would listen to your music before making a judgment on it ala Wildhorn etc.

No one is going to the producers, the writers or any of those individuals and telling them THEY suck. When you put your work in the public eye you expect to hear the crap too. Part of the territory.
I have no opinion on this particular show, haven't seen it. But I don't get UPSET when someone else hates a show I personally love. Their views don't lessen MY enjoyment of a show. Their views don't lessen the passion or heart and soul of the creators either.
And lastly, I just ignore those being downright nasty. Feeding those you consider trolls just makes them stronger. (NOTE: not a personal attack on any individual)

Put me in the boat of people wanting to see this before it's gone but also NOT wanting to pay (even-near) to full-price
It was available on a papering service last week, but appears to be gone now.
How much is it on TDF? And better yet, anyone got a hook-up for comps? :) I'm bad
