I've heard they changed some things to better suit his voice. It seems he's better than what people originally thought he would do.

They changed the vocals a bit for Tony and now again for Alfie. They also change Laura's a bit to fit as well.
It's a big role. He's had an admirable start and is quite endearing at times.

Terrible is in the eye of the beholder. This show grossed $1MM last week. It will close when it is time to do so

Exactly. I think the Neverland Deathwatch will have to wait until at least the end of summer to resume. In the meantime, I will look forward to seeing Alfie on my next trip. It's not a role I would ever have imagined for him so I'm really curious to see his take on it, having seen both Morrison and Yazbeck.

I didn't realize changes were made and I saw both Matthew and Tony! I'll have to pay better attention when I see Alfie.
Glad to see this show is still around a year later (and crossing the $1 million mark again!)

I'm sure he was great, but If you'd like the show to close asap, you need not concern yourself unduly.

Alfie is simply incredible in this show. He gives a performance that is so different from all the other Barries up to this point. The keys are all changed, and he BELTS THE CRAP out of the score. Something tells me the show would have been much more successful if he originated the role.

I don't know much about Alfie but I heard him performing a song on SiriusXM On Broadway the other morning. I'm not familiar with the song, but I thought he had a beautiful voice.
As for wishing FN an early closure, I don't get that either. It's perfectly fine to dislike, even despise a show. But wishing it an early closure just because you don't like it seems odd to me.
I found Urinetown a total waste of time, but I certainly wasn't wishing it failure.
Not sure what's behind that.

I've seen a lot of Broadway and I didn't think it was all that bad of a show when I saw it last year. Certainly not the best show I've seen….by a long shot. But it was very well-received by the audience, creating quite a buzz as we were walking out of the theater.
Different strokes though, and difference of opinions is what theater is all about.

Alfie is originating the show on West End next year. I do wonder how the London critics will respond to the overall show. There will likely be more good will there since the PR issues that occurred pre opening here will be none existent there. Plus the cultural significance of a show set in the local area will naturally be greater. The composer is also from a successful British boyband.

I've seen all the Barries also = including the amazing understudy Kevin Kern = and they are all different yet all successful in their own way. It was interesting seeing for example Yasbeck who was a dancer who sings as opposed to Boe who is a singer who dances. No one sings quite like Boe of course but it was cool to see Yasbeck sail over that bench instead of climb over it and make every movement count.
But more successful if Boe opened the show? I don't think so. Would the Barrie character's reviews been better? Don't know of course. But people who didn't like the show and/or were not fans of Harvey Weinstein were going to not like it regardless who played the lead. But without Matthew and his TV fame through Glee, FN was able to stay open through bad reviews garnering a million dollars weekly and I doubt that would have happened with Alfie.
I have never seen whoever is playing Barrie not to get the loudest thunderous applause at the end...no matter who it is...

I love Matthew Morrison and went to see FN specifically for him and was really disappointed... the singing, the acting, the story, (the accent!) everything was just blehhh.. Then I found out later that it was Jeremy Jordan who did the role first and that pissed me off because I know he would have killed it. I may need to go back just to hear Alfie sing even though I thought FN material was terribly mediocre because WHAT A VOICE!

Do people think that Matthew played the role too introverted ? I've read that and having watched him on Glee for 6 years I know that he can portray a hyper happy go lucky mentor persona. I was curious about his character choices and If he might have made a conscious choice not to play Mr Shue on stage.

I don't think any of the previous Barrys can "out sing" Alfie in the role, TBH. However, Alfie's strengths are singing, not acting and so I'm curious to seem him in FN. I'm sure his vocals will be fantastic and the accent will be spot on, naturally.
I agree with whoever said it's perfectly fine to dislike or even hate the show (guilty as charged for other productions I confess) , but I do find puzzling the rah rah rooting for the show to actually close sooner than later. Just bizarre.
It looks as if the show is going to recoup it's costs as the naysayers fervent dreams won't come true.

I didn't mean success in terms of financial. I mean as a show. Morrison struggled with the accent and seemed very unnatural to me. Yazbeck's dancing is obviously amazing, yet to me, the dancing is already strong in the show so it stands out less obviously. Kevin Kern is okay to me, just kind of wooden. Alfie and Jeremy are the two Barries to me that make the show interesting. Alfie has the accent down and it flows so much better because of it. His vocals are really outstanding, hard to compare to ANYONE else on broadway. It really stands out it this dance-heavy cast. His choices are much less tongue-in-cheek, and the show felt a lot more serious and a lot less cheesy with him in the title role in my opinion. Jeremy acts the role best in my opinion. He actually has true emotion, something that Alfie is also somewhat attempting, yet is just not the actor that Jeremy Jordan is.
This may be unpopular opinion but I find both Kern and Morrison to be a little dry in the role. They both play it in a sort of blasé way that I don't enjoy whatsoever.
I think this show's score and basis have merit. The book and creative aspects are the flaws in my opinion.
