"We could be...
Sitting in the computer lounge
4 am before the final paper is due
Cursing the world 'cause I didn't start sooner
And seeing the rest of the class there too"
- I Wish I Could Go Back to College, "Avenue Q"
#26re: Lyrics You Love
Posted: 7/14/04 at 12:42amI love that song PERIOD. It is so true about what college is really like, besides the "**** my TA" line.

My favorite lyric from JRB is:
"These people make me tense.
I live in fear they'll start a conversation.
These people make no sense:
They talk and I just stare and shut my mouth.
It's like a foreign land.
I didn't understand
That being Southern's not just being in the South"
AND
"Home calls, and I'm free of the Southern breeze,
Free of magnolia trees and endless sunshine!"
--from PARADE
Why do I like it so much? Because I hate South Carolina and want to leave SO BAD!!!!

I love "The More You Ruv Someone." For example:
The more you love someone,
The more you want to kill ‘em.
The more you love someone,
The more he make you cry
Though you are try
For making peace
With them and loving,
That’s why you love so strong
You like to make him die!
So true. And I also *love* "Not While I'm Around." If I ever get married, I'm going to play that at the reception.

Every once in awhile, I get on this kick where I get all teary, sit in my room, and play it over, and over, and over...
(Singing along, of course.)
It's an incredible piece.
SpiderDJ, I agree with you about that line.
My school doesn't even have TAs.

These favourites are just off the top of my head, because goodness knows I have a lot of lyrics I adore:
"You gotta go after the things you want while you're still in your prime"
- Avenue Q (really hits a deep chord in me)
"To love another person is to see the face of God"
- Les Miz (I love practically all the lyrics in Les Miz, but this is the great last statement)
"Will the world remember you when you fall? Could it be your death means nothing at all? Is your life...just one more lie?"
- Les Miz (gives me chills)
"Oh my friends, my friends, forgive me that I live and you are gone....empty chairs at empty tables, where my friends will sing no more"
- Les Miz (again, I adore the lyrics to Les Miz, I find them incredibly poetic and moving)
"Who will buy this wonderful morning, I'm so high I swear I could fly"
- Oliver
"So you fill your life with sound, and if you dance like hell you hope you'll never touch the ground. What happens when the music stops? In the silence will he stay?"
- Bare
"I'm trying to hold on, just waiting to hear your voice, just a word, just one word will do, to end this nightmare..."
- The Lion King
"You will be who you want to be, you can choose whatever heaven grants. As long as you can have your chance, I swear I'll give my life for you."
- Miss Saigon
"And there were three sexes then, one that looked like two men glued on back to back - they were the children of the sun. And similar in shape and girth were the children of the earth, they looked like two girls rolled up in one. And the children of the moon were like a fork shoved on a spoon, they were part-sun part-earth, part-daughter part-son."
- Hedwig and the Angry Inch
"But I could swear by your expression that the pain down in your soul was the same as the one down in mine....that's the pain that cuts a straight line down through the heart, we call it love."
- Hedwig and the Angry Inch
I could go on forever!

Ok my newest looove is L5Y, I adore almost every lyric!
One of my favorites is...
"Take a breath, take a step, take a chance. Take your time."
Oh yeah also:
"I'll be there soon, Cathy
I'll finish up this chapter and be out the door
I swear I'll be there soon, Cathy
Don't give up on me yet
I am so proud of you, baby
You're doing what you never got to do before
And I will be there, ripe and crawling
If ****in' Random House stops calling
Don't lose faith
Don't get down
Don't despair
I'll be there"
-I really don't know why I love that part I just do! I could listen to it over and over again...in fact I have!
I also love the funny lyrics in The Shmuel Song, Shiksa Goddess, and A Summer in Ohio.
I
JRB!
I think my favorite lyric though is from Millie:
"New, improved, and rearranged
It's ever-changing, yet it's never changed"
I just think it's so fitting of not only New York but everything in life. It's also one of those times in the show that always gives me chills.

You've gotta go after the things you want while you're still in your prime! There's a fine fine line between love and a waste of time -- Avenue Q
You don't know what you do to me, you don't have a clue! You can't tell what it's like to be me looking at you... it scares me so that I can hardly speak. -- Nine
At night I pray that soon your face will fade away -- Everytime, Britney Spears
Sometimes in my darkest thoughts I wish I'd never learned what it is to be in love and have that love returned -- Aida

BlueWizard put this before and I agree:
"Oh my friends, my friends, forgive me that I live and you are gone....empty chairs at empty tables, where my friends will sing no more"
- Les Miz
"You always knew, didn't you mother, you always knew as mother's always do. You always knew didn't you mother, I Was A Stranger In This World. This dumb education was never quite part of my plan. So you left me to ruin, but I'll always know who I am" ~Taboo
"Everybody loves a winner, so nobody love me." ~Cabaret
"You're shining like the brightest star. A transmission on the midnight radio" ~Hedwig

"and when you're living in America at the end of the millenium, you're what you own!" ~Rent
"My Ego's Swollen, I Just Keep Rolling Along"

I love Hedwig or *Hedvig*. My favorite lines comes from "Angry Inch"
"Long story short
When I woke up from the operation
I was bleeding down there
I was bleeding from the gash between my legs
My first day as a woman
and already it’s that time of the month."
I know it is kinda morbid that I chose that, but I just love the sarcastic humour that is in this song and throughout the show/movie.
Another lyric I love from Hedwig is from "Midnight Radio"
"Rain falls hard
Burns dry
A dream
Or a song
That hits you so hard
Filling you up
And suddenly gone"
It is just beautiful. Stephen Trask really needs to come out with something else. Genius.

" I know every step, I know every song, I know there's a place where i belong, I see all those party lights shining ahead, So someone invite me, Before i drop dead!" ~ Hairspray ~ this one just fit me sooo well!
"I'm alive and I will survive, Show the world that I can take it, When I hit the heights
Put my name in lights, Show the world that I can, Make it "~ Fame
"Theres a dream in teh future theres a voice strugle we have yet to win and there's pride in my heart 'cause I know where I'm goin and I know where I've been
There's a road we must travel there's a promise we must make 'cause the riches will be plenty worth the risk and the chances that we take." ~ Hairspray
"He loves me.. He loves me... He loves me... but only.. on my ...own" ~Les Mis

Hmmmm, must be a LOT of young Broadway fans on this board. While I see that Sondheim has been mentioned, NO ONE has mentioned four of the greatest lyricist in musical history:
Ira Gershwin:
S'Wonderful
S'Marvelous
You should care for me.
S'Awful nice
S'Paradise
S'What I like to see...
Cole Porter:
I lost my hatbox
I lost mt sables
I lost my suitcase
The one with the beautiful labels
I lost my travels checks
Only this afternoon
I still have my "virgini-ti"
But I'm hoping to lose it soon!
Carolyn Leigh:
Sophia Loren
And Lollibrigida
Could walk in the room
And they'd only get frigier
Lorenz Hart:
My funny valentine
Sweet comic valentine
You make me smile with my heart
You're looks are laughable
Unphotagraphical
Yet, you're my favorite work of art
My favorite Sondheim lyrics are in "You Meet My Wife" from A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC:
She flutters. How charming!
She flitters. My word!
She floats. Isn't that alarming?
What is she? A bird?
Love all the new shows, but I'm beginning to think that maybe I should campaign for a "Pre-1985 Musical Appreciation Week".

"But I'm always true to you, darling, in my fashion. Yes, I'm always true to you, darling, in MY WAY!" - Kiss Me, Kate
That whole song actually is really great.
