Posted: 7/14/04 at 6:46amFor simplicity, it's hard to beat '"The truth is that you made my life superb" she said' from The Day The World Stopped Turning in Elegies. It makes me cry pretty much every time I listen to it, especially as it follows on from 14 Dwight Ave, Natick, Mass. which is unbearably wonderful.

Basicly anything by Jason Robert Brown.
I also particularly like the lyrics to Being Alive, even though there isn't much to them.

I'll give SticktoPriest's answer.
"Beadle isn't bad till you smell it and notice how well it's been greased...stick to priest."

Lately I've been stuck on these lyrics:
But if you never see my face
How will you know what you feel is real
I've been trying to be something, I'll never be
But I'm nothing special, there's no mystery
I've been hiding from the world, and from myself
Wanting love so desperately, oh so desperately
If you see all the hurt in my eyes
Will you laugh, will you run, will you carry me
If I tell you that I'm weak and I'm scared
Will that seem absurd
I'm the loneliest boy in the world

I love pretty much every lyric by William Finn and Jason Robert Brown, especially:
"I never wanted to love you,
I only wanted to love and not be blamed.
Let me go,
You should know I'm not ashamed
To have loved you..." --Falsettos (March of the Falsettos)
"I have lived in the clouds for so long,
I like it more on the ground...
Am I lost? Pretty near it,
Now my spirit...I have found!" --"I Have Found" (Carolee...amazing...Does anybody know what that last note is?)
"Your face, your voice
Rejoice to have you here with me,
Is such a fine surprise.
I see the world through your eyes,
I taste lemon on my lips
I marvel at the sailing ships of well dressed boys and girls,
And life,
Life has infinite joys." "Infinite Joy"
And as a newest favorite lyrics, from "I Sing", a new recording I just got:
"I'm not who I was and I'm singing because
I don't know who I am but I gotta be me.
I sing cuz I'm lonely
I sing cuz I'm free,
I won't be the only one singing for me,
Why am I the only one singing for me?
Amd I the only one singing for me?" --I Sing!

DEFYING GRAVITY!!! ok, now for my reason...if you listen to the lyrics, not the music, you realize that elphaba is saying about ho wmany times she has tried to do the right thing, and how its getting her no where. and how she realizes that she will never be happy, until she frees herself from these people. and she knows that if she does free herself, then she will be lonely, and she will miss her sister. but shes willing to take that chance. so, out of the song, my favorite line is: "and if im flying solo, at least im flying free!"
and from hairspray because that show just makes you happy:
nice white kids who like to lead the way, and once a month we have our negro day!!!
ohhhh i love that line. its sooooooo funny!!!

The reprise of "I'll cover you" in RENT makes me cry.
"When you're worn out and tired
when your heart has expired."

"In the depths of her interior were fears she was inferior and something even eerier – no one dared to query her superior exterior . . ." Follies
"Won't wear a tux!"
"Of course not dear, Tuxedoes are for waiters . . ." Sunset Boulevard
“In riches and rags and in rhythm and rhyme; the people called it Ragtime!” Ragtime
"Sheppards pie peppered with actual sheppard on top." Sweeney Todd
There are probably loads more I'll think of as soon as I press post :)

"Haven't you got poet or something like that?"
"No, you see, the trouble with poet is how do you know it's deceased? Try the priest!" -"A Little Priest"
"Why do we stay with lovers
Who we know down deep
Just aren't right?
Why would we rather
Put ourselves through hell
Then sleep alone at night?" -"Louder Than Words"
"All right
The panic recedes
All right
Everyone bleeds
All right
I get what I need
And nobody needs to know" -"Nobody Needs to Know"
"We could be
Sitting in the computer lab
Four AM before the final paper is due
Cursing the world 'cause I didn't start sooner
And seeing the rest of the class there, too" -"I Wish I Could Go Back to College"
Along with bunches of other JRB and Sondheim lyrics that I can't think of at the moment.

CRJ I loove like all of those you posted!! They are all fantastic lyrics.
Another one I really like is from Taboo-
"You think you know me
I don't even know me
I'd screw my head off
And lay it at your feet
So you can tell me please
What's on my mind"

CastAlbumFan: OMG, how could I forget "My Funny Valentine"?! I LOVE that one!
Another addition to the list: "Lift The Wings" from "Riverdance," particularly the last refrain:
"Lift the wings that carry me away from here and
Fill the sail that breaks the line to home
But when I'm miles apart from you
I'm beside you when I think of you--A Storin
And I'm with you as I dream of you--A Storin
And a song will bring me near to you--A Storin A Gra"
It was one of my grandfather's favorite songs. We played it at his funeral, and it always makes me think of him.

'it well may be that we will never meet again in this lifetime, so let me say before we part, so much of me is made of what i learned from you. You'll be with me like a handprint on my heart and now whatever way our story ends, I know you have rewritten mine by being my friend.'-For Good
'they say that i won't last too long on broadway. i'll catch a neon bus for home they say. but they're dead wrong. i know they are. cause i can play this here guitar. and i won't quit till i'm a star on broadway!'-On Broadway
the entire 'impossible dream (the quest)
'in my ivory tower life was just a hostess snack, but now i've tasted chocolate and i'm never going back!'-Without Love
all of pennylou's answers as well.
sooo many more

i totally agree with "The Impossible Dream" lyrics.
i would have to add "someone tell me when is it my turn, don't i get a dream for myself? starting now its gonna be my turn, gangway world get off of my runway!" from Rose's Turn.
i also love the part of "i would give my life for you" in Miss Saigon when she says "sometimes i wake up reaching for him. i feel his shadow brush my head but it's just moonlight on my bed." Pretty much all of them from "I Still Believe" too, because that was the first song that ever made me cry.
plus everything from Les Mis. oh, and "Last Midnight" from Into the Woods.

Popcultureboy,
Just reading your choice nearly made me burst into tears (Carolee Carmello's version on INFINITE JOY is freaking incredible).
As for old school, where's the love form Mr. Hammerstein?
'The sun is swimmin' on the rim of a hill;
The moon is takin' a header,
And jist as I'm thinkin' all the earth is still,
A lark'll wake up in the medder.' - Oklahoma
'He will not always say
What you would have him say.
Then all at once he'll say
Something wonderful.' - King and I

Posted: 7/14/04 at 3:51pmOk nevermind I misread what you had typed. Got me all excited there...but I agree, even though I love Christian Borle's version, Carolee's is much more powerful.

Posted: 7/14/04 at 3:51pmI am going to toot JRB's horn some more and say that he can do no wrong to my ears. Brilliant.
#71re: Lyrics You Love
Posted: 7/14/04 at 3:54pmBasically the lyrics of most of the songs from Avenue Q. Sooooo clever.

I'm with you, redhotinnyc2! :)
I also love ALL of Frederick Loewe's lyrics in MY FAIR LADY ("I'd prefer a new edition to The Spanish Inquisition than to ever let a woman in my life!") and CAMELOT ("You'll disconnect him? I'll vivisect him! You'll open wide him?! I'll subdivide him!")
Fred Ebb's lyrics in CHICAGO were great too.
And of course, we also cannot forget Dorothy Fields and the team of Betty Comden and Adolph Green.

The entire song "Louder Than Words" from Tick, Tick...Boom!
"Why should we try to be our best
When we can just get by and still gain
Why do we nod our heads
Although we know the boss is wrong as rain
Why should we blaze a trail
When the well-worn path seems safe and so inviting
How, as we travel, can we see the dismay and keep from fighting"
The final chorus gives me chills every time....
Pretty much anything by Jason Robert Brown.
"Then he smiiiiiiles
And where else can I go?
I didn't know the rules do not apply
And then he smiiiiiles
And nothing else makes sense
While he invents the world that's passing by..."
Everything from Rent I adore, I dig the music more than the lyrics though the lyrics are great.
"Will I loose my dignity/Will someone care
Will I wake tomorrow from this nightmare"
All of "La Vie Bohem" of course. lol
"Simple are the ways we say goodbye" is probably my favorite single line in a show, from NINE.
"Fine, fine Line" has great lyrics as well. Wow, I could go on forever but I should stop here before I become even more long-winded.

How could I forget "For Good" from Wicked? Silly me. Love it.
Also, "As someone told me lately, everyone deserves a chance to fly"
