Hmm. Is that the best line in RENT? It's hard to try to ignore the melody when you're thinking abous lyrics. "Because reason . . ." is one of my favorite parts as far as music , not lyrics.

I think that Stephen Schwartz's music for his shows are all very clever and poignant.
42nd Street, Hairspray, Wicked, Fiddler, The Producers, Into the Woods, Urinetown, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, A Chorus Line, West Side Story, Avenue Q, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Caroline Or Change, Annie, The Wiz, Anything Goes, Sound Of Music, Cinderella, Hello Dolly!, Phantom, Les Miz....
all of these shows have wonderful lyrics and music, whether it be because of its simplicity, its funniness, its symbolism, or its intracy. The list goes on.

I think that "Defying Gravity"s music and lyrics are one of the best of the past 20 years. And that scene may be one of the greatest theatrical moments in musical theater history. It makes the show overly complete!

I love almost all the BARE lyrics, they're so moving.
Let the backlash begin, but i really like
"There are bridges you cross you didn't know you cross until you've crossed"
and it makes perfect sense to me.
ie. there are things that happen you don't know have occurred until after they have. I think it connects to Glinda very well, in the context of the show, and it's a great Cheno-belt example.

I found it very...moving lol
It's especially moving after the show, because you see the anguish Glinda has for having to create this happy political figure who is endorsing the killing of her friend...very touching and emotional.

I think a lot of Schwartz's lyrics you have to look at the deeper meaning. Also a lot of times he writes lyrics that pertain to the show and are horrible out of context. It is in those cases where he shines as a composer.

"know the slang you've got to know" refers to all the words that are used in OZ that Elphaba must learn to be "popular"

I love JRB's lyrics. He can write very funny lyrics(Shiksa Godess) and really powerful lyrics(Songs for a New World).
