Gee, Officer Krupke,
We're down on our knees,
'Cause no one wants a fellow with a social disease.
Gee, Officer Krupke,
What are we to do?
Gee, Officer Krupke,
Krup you!

- Stephen Sondheim (West Side Story)

Jonathan Larson was so talented. tick tick Boom has amazing lyrics, especially Louder Than Words. Its too bad he died so young. I can only imagine the amazing shows he would of written. Does anyone know if there are plans of a production of Suberbia or whatever his other show is called?

"Hmm. Is that the best line in RENT? It's hard to try to ignore the melody when you're thinking abous lyrics. "Because reason . . ." is one of my favorite parts as far as music , not lyrics."

I didn't say it was the best line in RENT, but it certainly is one of my favorites. As far as RENT goes, another one of my favorites is Mark's whole bit during Halloween.
"How could a night so frozen be so scalding hot?
How can a morning this mild be so raw?
Why are entire years strewn
On the cutting room floor of memory
When single frames from one magic night
Forever flicker in close-up
On the 3D Imax of my mind
That's poetic
That's pathetic"

So on and so forth. RENT is full of little lyrics that either a) make me cry or b) give me chills.

There are tons of others from other musicals, but I'm just too lazy. Hahaha.

"The stage is where I live and come alive and act out all the things that go on in my life. It's not just what I do for a living, it's my shrink and my love affair. No one in my life has ever or ever will kiss me on the mouth like this lover called my relationship with my performance."

man! i see a lot of my favorites popping up all over the place...

i used this from L5Y in a paper for school, i think JRB is a genius:
"We build a treehouse
I keep it from shaking
Little more glue every time that it breaks
Perfectly balanced
And then I start making
Conscious, deliberate mistakes"

and from rent, i second "Because reason..." and add:
"So lets find a bar
So dark we forget who we are
And all the scars of the
Nevers and maybes die"

those are just the first ones i thought of!

hey finn fanatic, and anyone else
is it just me or does christian sound a little out of tune at the beginning of his version of "world stopped turning"? i definitely think it is supposed to sound a bit dissonent but i have listened to both versions carefully and i dont think that the arrangement of the song is any different. just thought i'd ask your opinion

dramafreak13-

I just relistened to Christian's version of the song, and yes, he does sound a bit out of tune. He makes up for it though, in my opinion, later in the song. It is one of the most beautiful and touching songs I've ever heard, especially since Finn wrote it after the death of his mother. I recently saw "Elegies" in Boston, and it was amazing. The man who sang "When the Earth Stopped Turning" almost made me burst into tears. He just stood there, staring, and singing. It was so incredibly moving and powerful.

(also, Carolee is a Goddess, so it's hard to compare people to her...in my opinion). Updated On: 7/15/04 at 09:24 AM

"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

Two things.

Just cause it's on a track does not mean it's a 'lyric'. Weidman wrote those words, which are part of the book, so it's a 'line'. When we have a favorite 'line' thread, please feel free to insert it there.

And, just to be really picky, the 'v' in 'Valentine' from 'My Funny Valentine' should be capitalized. It is the proper name of the character being sung about.

I will never understand
How all the world misjudged you
When I have always known
How lucky I must be
I will never understand
How I kept from going crazy
Just waiting there till you came home to me
~Parade

Why not both instead?
There's the answer if your clever
Have a child for warmth
And a baker for bread
And a prince for...whatever!
NEVER!
it's these woods.
~Into the Woods

and I love the endings of "Nothing" (Chorus Line) and The Stars and The Moon (Songs for a new world) - in reality my list is pretty darn endless but these were the only ones I could think of :)

haha those are some of my favorite lyrics from bat boy. hm.. what else can i add? oh!

'thank you all for listening, that's all i have to say.'-the only reason i like this part is b/c of Deven's high squeeky voice.

'bobby think, you're standing on the brink. you'll be arrested soon perhaps as soon as noon, and i could never bare to see you taken where the guilty pee-ers meet: THE TOILET JUDGEMENT SEAT!'

'the trouble with school is they always try to teach the wrong lesson. believe me, i've been kicked out of enough of them to know. they want you to become less callow less shallow, so i say why invite stress in? stop studying strife, and learn to live the unexamined life....'-god i wish that was my philosophy!

Ooh, I thought of another favorite.

"And I said...okay
And I got my yacht
And the years went by
And it never changed
And it never grew
And I never dreamed
And I woke one day
And I looked around
And I thought...my God
I'll never have the moon"

And all of the rest of the "Stars and the Moon" lyrics, but the ending just makes me choke up.

For me, it begins & ends with the master:

For sheer loveliness:

I chose and my world was shaken--so what?
The choice may have been mistaken, the choosing was not.
You have to move on.
(Stephen Sondheim, Move On, Sunday in the Park with George)

For the rhyme of it:

With riotous laughter we quietly suffer
This season in town which is reason enough for
A weekend in the country…
(Stephen Sondheim, A Weekend in the Country, A Little Night Music)

For the character it reveals:

An efficient little kingdom, the dominion of the queen,
where at any given moment the ashtrays are clean.
There are many little battles which never are fought,
and if, on occasion, I think about you,
it’s a pleasant little thought.
(Stephen Sondheim, Pleasant Little Kingdom, Follies)

For all its delicious low humor:

By the sea, in our nest, we could share our kippers
With the odd paying guest from the weekend trippers,
Have a nice sunny suite for the guest to rest in --
Now and then, you could do the guest in --
By the sea.
(Stephen Sondheim, By the Sea, Sweeney Todd)

Most of tick...tick...BOOM ! , but especially, "We've only so much time to spend, don't want to waste the time I am given. Have it all, play the game, some recommend. I'm afraid it just may be time to give in." Kills me, because it absolutely true.

Need to go to sleep and think of more...
