HAHA - that's why i am seeing it again - front row - YES!
(JK about not liking hairspray to anyone that may be thick)
"Oklahoma"
I can maybe see why you might not like it/may be sick of seeing it...
But how in the world can you say the musical that changed musical theatre forever is overrated?
If anyone says Carousel, I give you fair warning...I will hunt you down and kill you.

What do you mean change? Try, started American musical theatre! (ok, i suppose that's a change - but you missed the *more* obvious one)
I hate carousel - sorry, i am living dangerously today...J/K

There's a big difference between liking a show and appreciating it for its historical significance in theatre.

ok...
i still think the show is overrated and REALLY don't think it added much to musical theatre....
"There's a big difference between liking a show and appreciating it for its historical significance in theatre."
'Overrated' carries significance and meaning in both of those categories. I think that saying it is overrated also implies it had little historical significance.
But I may be wrong.

Oh no, I completely understand how significant Oklahoma was/is to musical theatre. The material is just not my cup of tea.
Margo, I hereby sentence you to a week of listening to "Superlover" on an endless tape loop.

AAAAAAAAAAAAGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
I take it back!
I take it back!
Didn't The Geneva Convention outlaw that kind of torture as cruel and unusual??!!!!!
Well, then, Margo, I say you have to go stand in the middle of a large group of middle-age women at a Josh Groban concert instead.
oh Priest -- can't we make it worse and say Margo has to be at a John Tesch and/or Yanni concert.....

I'll be sure to bring a raincoat and galoshes to protect me from all of that moisture.
Well, KMF, he expressed to me his squeamish nature at seeing all the giddiness of the middle aged women lining up for a Groban concert at Radio City sometime in the recent past.
So I think the punishment suits him.
The exact words he used to describe how they felt would be inappropriate. after all ,we don't want to corrupt the young un's like Gov.
EDIT: Nvermind, he pretty much summed it up in that post.
me "thinks" you are right Priest......
Margo, I am so sorry for you

This thread has definitely taken a turn for the better. :)
Any R&H "gingham-and-crinoline" show.
Gorgeous Rogers melodies, yes...but they bring out an excess of faux-folksy Hammerstien lyrics that annoy the crap outta me more often than not.
"What if its a ....GIRL??"
Oklahoma and Cats.. By far...
Actually now that I think about it... Most Rogers and Hammerstein shows..
This thread is making me ill also. I think some of you need to define overrated. And then you need to figure out if you are basing your decisions on plays that have been over produced (all over the country over and over again) or ones that fall into a definition of overrated.
To call WSS or Carousel over rated, in my humble opinion is absolutely ludicrous.
I think the first problem is starting a thread using Overrated and Classic together. It's pretty much a paradox. The shows that would be deemed overrated would not be "classics" but rather (again in my opinion) the "one hit wonders" of theater. The shows that were widely successful or popular for some inexplicable reason.
Not agreeing or disagreeing about Cats. But I don't consider Cats a "classic". I consider it a show that had a long and healthy run. But classic? No. I reserve that for the shows that have stood the test of time. Yes, shows like WSS, Sound of Music, Carousel, Fiddler, etc.
Craig...my hero!!!
perhaps the phrase "Classic Musicals That Are Surprisingly Just Not My Cup Of Tea" would be the less vomiticious way of putting it
actually, it's just the ****ing end of the world, and BWW is goin' DOWN!
