and I know there are a slew of others that I'm forgetting
I saw Brian Batt as Albin in La Cage and thought he was wonderful. I was disapointed about missing Gary Beach, but Batt really delivered.
One could almost say he really...stepped up to bat(t)?
ZING!
"This is what I trained to do, and this is what I love about theater. What I love about being an actress is being able to really look into myself and understand another human being. And out my own self, to shape and form and fashion a real human being--and to present that in such a way that people see something of themselves or their own understanding in that human being."

I agree that Megan Hilty was excellent as an understudy. I was VERY impressed (as was my hyper-critical husband). I'm so happy she's Glinda full-time now.
Also, Eden Espinosa was outstanding when I saw her fill in for Idina in June 04. I found her to be every bit as good as Idina.
I saw Kris Cusick understudy Norbert in December 03, and I thought he was fabulous.
I preferred Sean McCourt's Wizard to Joel Grey's.
Outside of Wicked...I saw Northern J. Calaway go on for Ben Vereen in Pippin back in the 70s, and I was stunned because I was a huge Vereen fan, had seen him in the role about 10 times, and never thought I could like anyone else in the part. But Calloway was sensational...and memorable.
Recently, Melissa Larsen went on as Penny Pingleton in the national tour of Hairspray in DC, and I thought she was better than the actress who currently has the lead.

Liz Larsen for Prudy/Gym Teacher/Matron in Hairspray, I prefer her much more over Julie Halston Corinne Melancon as Rosie in Mamma Mia! Cara Cooper as Natalie/Ed in All Shook Up Becky Gulsvig for Amber VonTussle in Hairspray (I saw her once as an understudy and twice full time) Julie Reiber as Brooklyn in BKLYN
Marcus Lovett in Carousel. I remember the first time he went on as Billy Bigelow with only a day or two of rehearsals. The NY Times did a story about it.
