I mean, I know it's about naked men - and clearly the proliferation of half naked men avatars around here means that people do NOT like naked men - but everyone ignores the fact that Steven Soderbergh is generally considered a real director, so there's actually a possibility this movie could be good, right? Despite the offensive horror of Matt Bomer's pecs, I mean.

If Magic Mike does come to Broadway, does that mean we won't get another revival of Gypsy in the next five years or something?

The reviews for the film have been glowing, and it's now a NYTimes Critics' Pick.

I love Soderbergh's work and I shall be seeing this very soon. I'll reserve judgment about the possibility of a musical adaptation of the film until I see it. (I do think that it has potential.)

I agree, Phyllis. Broadway, and especially this message board, has NEVER been about objectifying male dancers.

Not really sure why people think this is a glorified strip show, Soderbergh is a brilliant director, the TV spots are highly misleading in terms of what the movie is actually like and what it's trying to do. I can't wait to see a musical version on Broadway.

"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"

I can't imagine Soderburgh going near a script that didn't have some substance. Yes, it looks a lot of fun from the tv spots but I suspect it's just an initial pull-in and there's more to it. The reviews seem to be really good. I mean at worst it's Matt Bomer and Joe Manganiello in thongs.
Whether it would work on stage, if they loose too much plot and turn it into a glorified strip show, then maybe not. But with a good cast and script, I don't see why not.

I just saw it today. It was o.k. My least favorite character was Matthew Mc. He came across as smarmy. I liked Channing Tatum. Who else has seen the film? from RC in Austin, Texas

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

This property has one thing going for it that Naked Boys Singing and the Gaiety do not... mainstream female appeal.

It's been discussed on another thread regarding Naked Boys Singing that women would go to it for a bachelorette-party or girls night out event, only to be visibly alienated or "not in their element" when they realize how front-and-center gay-themed and gay-targeted the revue was. It may have been good-looking naked guys, but it was absolutely "not for them." Gay sex is the final frontier in American mainstream media, as Glee and Smash have both shown this year.

Magic Mike would still draw a big gay crowd, obviously, but the fact that it is targeted towards women as much as towards gays could completely change the amount of success it receives based on word of mouth.

And re:Playbilly- the men THEMSELVES may be accurately termed beefcake or beefcake performers, but the genre I referred to IS cheesecake, male or female- pure nonpornographic titillation material, with just the faintest hint of artistry to keep it from being declared pure smut.

It's a decent film. I enjoyed it. It's not a 2 hour strip show, and it's more than some sort of exploitation film. I could see it being made into a musical.
Though something would be lost when it's taken out of Tampa Bay.

RE: the Gaiety. I was there many times durng the 80s and 90s. It was full frontal nundity and erections. The "dancers" were also hustlers, who would vend their services behind the stage and/or would accommodate customers at the customers' hotel/lodging. To put it bluntly, it served as a male whorehouse. Some of them were pricey, some of them would go for $30, depending on the economy of the moment.

So, it's really in the works right now. I saw the film yesterday, and liked it, however, I'm going to guess they are going to change the plot for this musical.

Broadway-Aimed Magic Mike Will Be a Musical; Steven Soderbergh, Channing Tatum Attached

Steven Soderbergh and Channing Tatum, director and star, respectively, of the new movie "Magic Mike"—about the lifestyle of male strippers — will produce the musical adaptation of the film, which is scheduled to hit Broadway in summer 2013, according to Deadline.com.

Theatre agent John Buzzetti of William Morris Endeavor Entertainment is also attached to the project, which will have a book by Reid Carolin, who also penned the movie's screenplay. Soderbergh and Tatum will produce Magic Mike: The Musical with partners Gregory Jacobs, Nick Wechsler and Carolin.

The Warner Bros. film hits movie theatres June 29 and is inspired by events in Tatum's life. The film includes choreographed striptease acts and exotic dancers dressed as police men—à la The Full Monty—as well as an opening number set to The Weather Girls' "It's Raining Men." The story follows a 19-year-old slacker (Alex Pettyfer), who meets Magic Mike (Tatum) and is introduced to the world of stripping, picking up girls and extreme partying.

Carolin is also a producer on the film, and appears in it along with co-producer/star Tatum, a beefy male stripper who is the most important asset to Club Xquisite. His exotic dancer pals are Matthew McConaughey, Joe Manganiello, Pettyfer and Matt Bomer, among others.

"We are doing Broadway," Carolin previously told USA Today. "We are working on it as a Broadway show, which would be a different story, more of a romp, more of a fun night out at a club with a story. I'm almost more excited about that than the movie because I think it's the perfect thing for women to go see on Broadway, to be participants in the show."

No official announcement has been made about a Broadway adaptation, but co-star Adam Rodriguez told USA Today that the possibility has been discussed since production began on the picture.

Broadway's most recent male-stripper musical, The Full Monty, by David Yazbek (music and lyrics) and Terrence McNally (book), played 770 performances on Broadway. It was inspired by the British film of the same name, though the musical moved the story's setting to economically depressed Buffalo, NY. The musical earned 10 Tony nominations (including Best Book and Best Score) in 2001; it spawned a tour and a cast album and remains a popular stock and amateur title.

Warner Bros. describes "Magic Mike" this way: "Set in the world of male strippers, the film follows Mike (Tatum) as he takes a young dancer called The Kid (Pettyfer) under his wing and schools him in the fine arts of partying, picking up women, and making easy money."

I thought this film was the worst piece of crap ever put onto a roll! Just utter trash. I found myself thinking about how many camera shots they would show of the lesbian (blonde girl not brunette) who was pretending to be Channing's girlfriend throughout the film. Every scene looked as though it had no script. So many times people flubbed or stepped on each others lines only to say the same line later. The scene after the opening with him and the bi girl you could tell there was no script and they were just ad-libbing. I mean did they just set up a camera and say he we need this to be our end result now go and then walk out of the friggin studio? In another scene I found myself being entranced by the clinking of the ice in a glass instead of the actual content of the film. The Worst Film Ever! I can't believe I spent my hard earned money on this. I didn't come in expecting an Oscar worthy performance, but there was all of 15 mins of stripping and everything else was that darn un-scripted story. (I did however enjoy the pumping scene with Big Joe)

TheLady, you are fully entitled not to have liked the movie for whatever reason, but the "Every scene looked as though it had no script. So many times people flubbed or stepped on each others lines only to say the same line later." style you describe is very realistic to real conversation among a group. You should tape record a conversation and see how awkward sounding they really are. It's VERY difficult to actually pull this style off well. Director Robert Altman, for example, is a master of this. Watch his works like "Nashville," or "Prairie Home Companion." These scenes are often ad libbed around a loose script (Christopher Guest does this as well).

You don't have to like this style or this movie, but it's a very widely accepted and respected way to make a movie seem more natural.

Magic Mike the Musical Appears to Move Forward:

The musical adaptation is planned to debut in the summer of 2013. Tatum and Magic Mike director Steven Soderbergh will produce this project alongside Reid Carolin, Gregory Jacobs, and Nick Wechsler. Carolin, who is Tatum's partner in Iron Horse Entertainment, penned the film's screenplay. He is also scheduled to write the book for the Broadway musical.
