They need a really hot movie star. And by "hot" I mean someone that everybody wants to see or sees regularly in movies right now. Not looks "hot."
That's a very short (and ever-changing) list. They need an A-list Guido. Antonio is more like B+ List.

Aren't there better musicals that could be turned into films? I mean really, is anyone really THAT desperate for a film version of NINE?
Right, right, I'm clearly biased, but the show isn't really all that great, is it? It doesn't really have the appeal of a DREAMGIRLS or a HAIRSPRAY or even a SWEENEY TODD. Are these musicals making so much money that they want to go with an all-star cast version of NINE?
Are we talking Industry, or Middle America. I think Bardem is better for the former, but Antonio for the latter.
Oscar or not, MORE people have heard of Antonio Banderas, than Javier Bardem! That is for sure!
I do hope it gets made! I was looking forward to someone singing "Folies Bergeres" and actually understanding the words!
Sorry Ms. Montevecchi!

If it has to happen, I think I'd rather see Bardem than Banderas get the work. I remember seeing Banderas on the Tonys and not being able to understand a word of what he sang.
Actually I really enjoy the idea of Robert Downey Jr. We know he can do the exhausted thing... He would be good. And i love his version of Joni Mitchell's "River"
And I know I am so going to hate myself for this in the morning (like that 2am trick)....but Roscoe why do you hate Marshall so much....
Antonio is not too old at all! Also, film could help with his diction problems too.
He would look much older than 40 on screen now. If it had been made 5-10 years ago, sure, but not now. Onstage, he could still do it, but not on film.

JR, I'll spare everybody the horror again, but if you do a search, somewhere is a post with my opinion on CHICAGO the movie.
So it isn't him per say, it is just his movie version of Chicago.

JR, I'll go ahead and PM you, if that's okay.
Best12, to be honest I don't think an A list actor is going to make the film anymore successful than a B or B+ actor. Depp hardly turned SWEENEY into a blockbuster. I think the material dictates the audience. Javier Bardhem would sell no more tickets than Antonio Banderas, Robert Downy Jr. etc. NINE is not ever going to be a financially viable film project.
But Bardem would have been brilliant, and though I like Antonio a lot, I'm still bummed that we won't see his take on Guido.
Do you think Sweeney would have made 150m without Depp?
Robert Downey Jnr is a great idea
What about Sasha cohen?
"What about Sasha cohen?"
To quote a favorite movie of mine . . .
"It's-a crazy, so crazy it just, might, work."
In everything he's done, he's played very broad. I can't see it myself.
I was disappointed when I heard this. In this case, I think they should just get Antonio. I can't see anyone else in the role at that moment.
Unless he (Antonio)turned it down, he should have been offered it from Day 1.

I hate to say it but I have to:
I think this film is screwed.
