NOT saying Wicked should have won best book, but since the book is so drastically different than the show I think Winnie deserves more credit, she practically wrote an entire novel on her own.

Why didn't Marisa Jaret Winokur deserve the Tony over Bernadette? I adore, worship Bernadette - but in the beginning months of Gypsy it was an average performance. As well as the fact the she was really sick and missed a ton of performances - which is why the Tony voters really didn't pick her - from what I hear. Berny has enough Tony's - lets give someone else a shot.

Heather Headly did an amazing job in AIDA.
And as much as I love Audra, I bet that the fact that she won three tonys already might have had something to do with it. And this year she won another. The girl was 4!!! Not that she did not deserve it.

I completely agree with M J R!

Will Rodgers Follies was awful, though I did love the opening number. I still don't understand the purpose of Act II. And I love all the writers behind it, but it beat Miss Saigon! Once on the This Island!

>> Interesting note: The 1959-60 Tony Awards was the only time that FIVE musicals were nominated

Small correction: The 1957-58 season also had five nominees --

Jamaica - E.Y. Harburg, Fred Saidy, Harold Arlen
The Music Man - Meredith Willson, Franklin Lacey
New Girl In Town - George Abbott, Bob Merrill
Oh, Captain! - Al Morgan, Jose Ferrer, Jay Livingston, Ray Evans
West Side Story - Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim

and the 1954-55 season nominees were

Fanny
The Pajama Game - George Abbott, Richard Bissell, Richard Adler, Jerry Ross
Peter Pan
Plain and Fancy
Silk Stockings

Thanks for the correction. I was probably thinking in the back of my mind that that was the LAST season with five nominted musicals.

ohmigosh. Make it stop. MAKE IT STOP. The Tonys were like... more than three weeks ago already. Wicked didn't win those awards. Whether or not you think it's a mistake or a triumph, Wicked didn't win. LET IT GO ALREADY.

*steps off soapbox*
Emcee has spoken. Thank you.

Don't even get me started on Raul. I was so heartbroken when he lost... I literally made a bee-line for the pint of ice cream in my refrigerator when they announced that Michael won. I know Michael is just as deserving, but I was still sad.

Trust me, I understand.
I was all huffy for the next few days. But when I finally saw Michael perform, I knew he had something special. It made me happy to hear him say in his acceptance speech that Raul would be up there next cause its SO true.
That made me happy.
Go Raul Go.

sometimes i think that with an award like "best featured actress", when a performers has one really amazing moment (krakowski's gravity-defying entrance in "a call from the vatican"), they can take the award because the voters aren't looking for someone who carries the show. masterson's role is less showy, she served as a piece of a well-constructed puzzle- the "plain girl", while krakowski get's the laughes, and the tony.

that said, krakowski was fantastic, her performance left much more of an impression on me than masterson's, although they were both wonderful. Updated On: 7/6/04 at 07:43 PM

You seriously think Eartha Kitt should have won over Karen Ziemba just because she went one (and only one) step beyond her schtick for once??? Ziemba was sheer powerful raw brilliance.
