Right on, Phyllis! Nobody should watch! Let the ratings sink the lowest they've ever sunk and have the Tonys canceled forever! That'll show 'em real good! How DARE they do something like this without asking US first?!?! The Tonys should be about a celebration of BROADWAY*.

Getting more people to the theater has always been part of the American Theater Wing's mission:
For nearly a century, the mission of the Wing has been to serve and support the theatre by celebrating excellence, nurturing the public's appreciation of theatre, and providing unique educational and access opportunities for both practitioners and audiences. Traditionally, ATW has done this by encouraging members of the theatre community to share their off-stage time and talent directly with the theatre audience at large--whether it was singing for the troops in the Stage Door Canteen of the 1940's, or sharing their stories on a podcast today.
Best known for creating The Antoinette Perry "Tony" Awards®, now presented with The Broadway League, ATW has developed the best-known national platform for the recognition of theatrical achievement on Broadway. Yet ATW's reach extends beyond Broadway and beyond New York, with educational and media work that offers the very best in theatre to people around the world.
I think it's fine that the Tony's are showing that theatre has a life after Broadway, and that the common folk can experience it in unusual places. This is a Tony Award winning best musical- it will always have a place in the Tonys.
"I never had theatre producers run after me. Some people want to make more Broadway shows out of movies. But Elliot and I aren't going to do Batman: The Musical." - Julie Taymor 1999
The masses have actually HEARD of Hairspray. That's probably their underlying point. Maybe the night will give us a new Les Miserables commercial to complain about.
"Through The Sacrifice You Made, We Can't Believe The Price You Paid..For Love!"
I just get so tired about hearing about "middle America" when I have lived a good portion of my life in middle America. Stop trying to blame us for what you hate about the Tonys, or should I said the Tony's? This bitch in middle America knows how to use apostrophes!

A very clever and very talented young theater composer just posted:
It's always been my dream to write an award winning Broadway musical so it could one day be shortened and tracked and performed aboard a cruise ship... just a step on my journey to the Tony's
