"I have a firm rule when hooking up with a guy I just met: Do NOT just take some pills he offers you even if they are really pretty."

Yeah, it is a stretch to say Cosby drugged the latest accuser.

"Serignese said Cosby invited her to his show and that afterwards, she was asked to join the star in a green room. When they were alone, Serignese said Cosby held out two white pills and said, "Here, take these." The next memory I have was, I was in a bathroom and I was kind of bending forward and he was behind me having sex with me. I was just there, thinking 'I'm on drugs, I'm drugged.'"

I don't think it counts as being drugged if someone gives you pills to take and you take them. I've always called that doing drugs.

Did she consent to having sex?
"Bill Cosby's scheduled stand-up show at Treasure Island in Las Vegas on Nov. 28 has been canceled "by mutual agreement," this according to a spokesperson for the casino. All tickets will be refunded. A representative for Cosby was not immediately available for comment.

Another show, set for April in Virginia, was also canceled.

Earlier on Friday, The Associated Press reported that an appearance Cosby was set to make in Tucson, Arizona at the Diamond Desert Casino on Feb. 15 had also been scrapped."

"Did she consent to having sex?"

No one knows, including her.

"Understanding consent
Consent is positive cooperation involving an act of free will, absent of coercion, intimidation, force, or the threat of force. A person cannot give effective consent if he/she is unable to appreciate the nature of the sexual act - as with a person who has a disability that would impair understanding of the act or if a person is impaired by the influence of drugs or alcohol.

There must always be active consent on both sides. Consent to one thing does not imply another. If limits are made clear and consent is not given, pressuring someone into changing their mind is not consent. ? If you are unwilling to accept a "no", then "yes" has no meaning.

Consent is based on choice.
It is active, not passive. Silence and passivity do not equal consent.
Consent is possible only when there is equal power.
Giving in because of fear is NOT consent.
Giving in or going along with someone to gain approval or to avoid being hurt is NOT consent.
Consent means two people (or more) deciding together to do the same thing, at the same time, in the same way, with each other."

Well, if you are given a drug that incapacitates you, you cannot consent to sex. So yes, if he gives her a drug which causes her to lose consciousness or otherwise lack the mental ability to consent to sex, and then he proceeds to have sex with her, it is rape.

Agreeing to take white pills in the 70's, while stupid in hindsight, does not mean she de facto consented to having sex.

EDIT: Namo, that made me laugh out loud. Maybe they could include liquors in the chocolates.

It was pretty stupid at the time, too.

But since I'm more interested in legal issues and media strategy, and not what Cosby did or didn't do, I'll let the defense rest here. if I wanted to discuss #rapeculture all day, I'd join Tumblr.

You mean like this story - of Cosby using his power and fame (and an aggressive team of lawyers) to muzzle stories alleging rape and then claiming to be the victim himself?

Not really. Someone threatening a lawsuit to try and stop a story is nothing new. Every story that is being advanced here is meant to advance the notion that Cosby is clearly guilty, but to what end? That is the part that I find interesting.

Like was said earlier in this thread, if you have a dozen women lining up with the same story, how many more do you need?

So then what? If we have 30 women by December... what happens? People keep scratching at this story, but I don't see the end game.

The statute of limitations is gone. The civil suit was settled. Bill's TV show got canceled. Netflix pulled his latest special. Some stand-up dates got pulled. OK... and?

Since I was a court reporter for many years, I was always curious with the notion of retribution. Where the family of the victims often want the defendants to "pay" for what they did, either through jail time or, rarer, the death penalty. And how they often hinged their healing on that outcome. It always seemed misguided to me, then and now. Albeit understandable.

If you need someone else to suffer so you can heal, you're not going to heal. If any of these women is still carrying this feeling around with them for decades, I don't think anything that happens to Cosby is going to fix whatever happened.

So, that is the larger dynamic of this story (and other like it) that interests me. It has nothing to do with their claims, or his guilt or innocence, ultimately. I just find these concepts interesting, often misguided, and always fascinating.

To reduce it to an ongoing pile-on to show that Cosby is possibly guilty is nothing that really interests me.

I guess I thought many of them suffered in shame and silence, and perhaps hearing similar stories might actually help them in their healing.

haterobics - in your annual review, are you described as "results-oriented"?

I'm self-employed now, so no. But never when I had a full-time job, either.

If anything, daily journalism sort of conditions you to just report the news of the day, and you rarely get to track the long-term outcomes further. So, I'd say that is more likely a case for why that element intrigues me... and the other stuff doesn't.

For one thing, a beloved entertainment figure turns out to be a serial rapist, so there's that. Women naming their experience helps others piece together the whole sordid history.

For another, Cosby joins the long list of moral scolds that includes Rush Limbaugh and Bill Bennet, who criticized the behavior of others and appointed themselves cultural arbiters.

To my mind, the more light that reveals the darkness of American myths, the better.

This. If we never have to hear another Cosby call out again it will be a blessing.

Yeah, frankly, hater, I'm kind of puzzled as to how a journalist fails to see the worthiness of this topic.

I gave up on trying to figure that one out a long time ago.

For the women allegedly raped or otherwise harassed, if sharing these stories provides them with closure, a sense of power, or a feeling of not being alone, then by all means share.

"Yeah, frankly, hater, I'm kind of puzzled as to how a journalist fails to see the worthiness of this topic."

I don't believe I said that. There is no connection between what I think is worthy as a news story versus what microelement of a news story intrigues me on a personal level. The latter is the only bit that interests me as far as exploring or discussing beyond reading the articles.

Admittedly, a discussion board is often not a good place to explore that nuance. Bill Cosby Rape Allegations

Well, I certainly can't dictate what you as a journalist should find interesting. Not my intent. If I'm interpreting your comments correctly, you're primarily interested in the legal implications of this situation, rather than any larger social/cultural commentary.

Denise!
Lisa Bonet tweeted:
"According to the karma of past actions, one’s destiny unfolds, even though everyone wants to be so lucky… Nothing stays in the dark 4ever!”
Part of the reason I was interested in the lack of comment from the rest of Cosby's TV family is because I know some die hard Cosby supporters who would change their mind if any of them confirmed suspicions of assault. To me their relative silence was almost as damning as them confirming anything. Especially Phylicia Rashad's.
